Now those are some impressive qualifications! I am sure all the currently
registered gladiators are going to be contemplating their fate by the sword
of the invincible and supreme Gladiatrix Pompeia! Don't make the battles too
swift, these gladiators have to last for 8 days! =)

You just had to announce this publicly, eh Pompeia... Now I believe we will
have to promise freedom to all of those who participate. It is the only way
I see us getting enough gladiators to risk their lives against the wrath of
Pompeia in the arena! =)

Salve C. Flavius Diocletianus,

Congratulations on your glorious success in the circus! Your performance was
impressive. Your name will be added to the champions section of the ludi web
site at NovaRoma.org. I also want to congratulate all citizens who took part
in this event. It is you that make this event so successful! It is good to
see Nova Roma coming together to celebrate a festival as a nation. I also
wish to congratulate my colleague, Caeso, and all of his scriba. They have
done a very good job, and this Megalesia should definitely go down in the
records as one of the best celebrations in our history. I can only hope that
my own festival which I am organising will be as successful as this one. I
am definitely looking forward to the next ludi celebration that Caeso will
be directing! Bene laboro!

LOL!!!

And ....... I shall be wearing a special armour consisting of ground
wheat sheaves in honour of Ceres, mixed with a "special" mineral
enhanced clay from the Canadian Shield.....my opponents' weapons will
crumble upon impact with this incredibly durable substance........

Oh, I know, I know..... the attire is, shall we say, less than
historically 'normal', but, alas, how often does a girl wield her
gladiatorial skills in honour of Matrona Ceres?

Let the games begin!!!

Salvete Omnes:

I would like to announce further, that in my debut as a combatant in
the Gladiatorial Ludi of Cerealis, I have a very competant manager.

He has been a longstanding friend and confident. He has a rich
military and gladiatorial history. He is also a U.S. Chief Petty
Officer, retired. He currently serves Nova Roma as Senator, Quaestor
(lucky me), Proconsul, and Praefectus of Sodalitas Militarium.

My Manager et Coach is Marcus Minucius Audens, Illustrious
Paterfamilias, might I add, to "Mr. Gladiator himself", Maximus
Minucius Gladius!

Ave Minucia!

Hmm. I do believe that the only destruction he would court would be his
own. You see, he would be likely to run into the Minucia children
practicing their arts of war - as proper Romans should - and if one of our
three-year-olds was feeling boisterous that day, the undertaker for the
Sertorii would have much work to do... putting together minced hash cannot
be a pleasant or easy chore.

Why, I don't know. It's not much of a challenge, meeting someone who is so
easily provoked into rage; it would be almost unfair, no more than wheat to
the scythe. I did not enter a driver in the races - after all, other
Minucii were participating, so victory was certain <restraining a small
grin>. However, I do have a young gladiator in training who is ready for
his first kill... I don't want him hurt at this stage, so I suppose your
driver would be a reasonable next step.

Please have Titus Albinus practice repeating "morituri, te salutant"; it
would be shameful for him to stutter or stumble over it when his turn
comes. Teach him that he must face his fate bravely.

Ode to Ceres
Lucia Valeria Secunda Ianuaira

Ceres, fruitful Goddess, in Your honor stands the tall, golden grain,
shimmering as it moves with the breeze, like a lake of molten gold, rippling at the touch.

At Your command the wheat leaps up, its heads becoming full and firm under the warm, summer sun.

Lush grow the plants, round grow the tender fruits, swelling and ripening, firm to the touch, glorious in their sweet scents.
Oh, that their sweet life might nourish us!

Bountiful Goddess, grant us full baskets of grain and lush fields full of vegetables and fruits!
Oh, that we might feast upon Your earthly treasures!

Ceres, Your rustic temples heaped with ears of corn, sweet ripe fruits of all kinds cascading over
Your altars, baskets filled to brimming with new turnips, beans and lentils, give eloquent testimony to the abundance of Your harvest
and the gratitude of Your people for Your love.

Gracious Goddess, with each meal, we witness Your strength and kindness.
We honor You for the gifts You have given us, that we may have plenty to eat.

Salvete Quirites.

My heartful thanks to all who congratulated me for the victory of my chariot Flavia Ferrata, driven by Spurius Diocles for the Greens.

The race itself is the benefit for our Res Publica, and so we all as Romans are the real winners! Thatīs real roman flair, and circus air is spreading through the streets of our virtual city. Iīm looking forward to further events, races, gladiator games.

Again, my heartful thanks to the honourable Curule Aedile and Senator Caeso Fabius Quintilianus and his Cohors Aedilis for this outstanding work.

Furthermore, my best congratulations to the honourable Senator and Proconsul Marcus Minucius Audens for winning the Megalesia Cultural Award for his Tragic Tale. Fine work, Marce Minuci Audens!!

Now, Quirites, we get real culture to improve our identity as a roman nation.

citizens may watch the fight description and jeer the combatants.
(Part of the fun of the
munus is doing this.)
The fighting is easy. Each fighter picks a attack. These attacks are
crossed indexed on a matrix which will give the result. However, as
there are only a limited number of attacks, representing fatigue, the fights
will eventually end because one or another fighter will not be able to stop
the attack and a kill will result. Or because of wounds a fighter will give
up from exhaustion.
At any rate that's the plan. You have to do a little book keeping during
the bout, but it's minor.
So E-mail me off list at qfabiusmaxmi@aol.com and we will get started
training.

Citizens of Nova Roma;

I wish to stand forward, most humbly with head bowed, to accept the
honor of recognition bestowed upon me by the Megalesia Committee.

On the eve of my departure to the Northern Regios of Scandia and Mare
Suebicum, I am most pleased and flattered to recieve such an honor from
the hands of such a illustrious group of judges.

My inspirations have sprung from my friendship for those who have been
patient with my requests and who have dealt with me in a friendly and
honorable manner. As I have said, I am but a student here, and any
victories which accrue to me are the ultimate result of the honor and
friendship brought to me by the Citizens of Nova Roma.

Thank You My Friends, I am honored beyond my saying.

Respectfully and With Humble Appreciation;

Pompeia Cornelia Strabo;

I am honored to be so recognized by my Gladiator Strabo. My nickname
for her affectonately given is the "Rock" which recognizes not only her
described armor but also her ability and desire to face up to all
squarely, and stand as a "Rock" against her opponents. Now enough of
the talk and more to work:

To the practise butts, "Rock", and give me fifty strokes to the left and
fifty to the right, Then when you are warmed up, we will take a 2 mile
run, behind my chariot, to limber those muscles before pitting you
against the "Wolf of Britannia" the winner of the last Ludi Magnus
Gladitore battle meet in PA, last September. Fear not, he has my
specific order to neither kill nor maim you, since such would reduce the
value of my Gladiator. The Ludi after all must always show a profit!!!!

Respectfully;

Marcus Minucius Audens;

Salvete Lucia Valeria et al

Beautiful Ode! I would even call it an hymn to Ceres, something worth or
being used to honour Ceres at one's home before the Lararium during the
Cerialia! May Ceres always grant the plentiness of the fruits of the earth
to the roman people of the quirites!
I am sending this to the Latinitas list as well, so than some volunteer
Latin expert may translate it to Latin (unfortunately my Latin is not good
enough to keep the beauty and style of a poem =().

Lucius Equitius Quiritibus SPD

This weekend April 13-14, 2002 the Legio XX will be encamped for Marching Through Time, at Marietta Mansion.
A multi-period living history encampment, with reenactors from Roman times through World War II. Mock battles and tactical demonstrations are performed all day long, and the public is invited to visit the camps and examine the participants and their accoutrements "up close and personal". Open 11 AM to 5 PM, admission is $5 for adults and $2 for students and seniors.
On Friday 12 April, before the event, a number of local schools bring groups of students in to see whatever reenactors have arrived to set up.
DIRECTIONS, 5626 Bell Station Rd., Glenn Dale, MD 20769. 301-464-5291. The Site Manager is Susan Wolfe. From I-95/495, the Capital Beltway, take Exit 20 onto Rt. 450 East, go 4 miles, turn left on Rt. 193, then left onto Bell Station Rd. and left again into Marietta. For Marching Through Time, only handicapped parking is permitted on site (due to lack of space), public parking being available at the recreation just beyond Bell Station Rd. Follow the signs and then catch the shuttle vans back to the site.

I hope that the weather cooperates and I am able to meet many Nova Romani. See you there.

Salvete, All! Merlinia here.
It took a bit of doing, but I got hold of the Red Roof Groups Dept.
today. Here is the scoop for Roman Days-

I have reserved 10 rooms, doubles, hopefully in the back on the lower
level. The dates reserved are nights of Fri,june 7, sat.8th, & sun. 9th.
Group title: ROMAN DAYS

Reservation #: B132-000645
Doubles are $79.99 +tax per night.
*** Note***
- Cutoff date for them to hold 'empty' rooms is MAY 6th.
-If you register by card and find you can't make it, let them know
by June 7th morning, and incur no penalty.
- If you don't use a Credit card to reserve, your reservation will
be held until 6 PM. If you use one, they will hold the room
unless you call.(and you will be billed)
-I have learned that rooms are 'first come, first served'- so check
in
before you head to Marietta Mansion.
-Rides; Last year, since many were going back & forth, it wasn't
hard
for people to get there &back, so if you get there by train or

I do not foresee anyone having to use a cab.

Salvete cives et amici,

I am so pleased to see that the gladiator combat event I have planned is
receiving so much enthusiasm! Within 48 hours, all the needed gladiators
were found and enrolled to fight during an eight day period from Aprilis
12th to 19th. The following gladiators and their sponsors will be involved
in the Cerialia Gladiator Combats of 2755 AUC:

I. Gladiator Mannus sponsored by citizen Gaius Minucius Hadrianus

II. Gladiator Fulmen sponsored by citizen Titus Octavius Pius

III. Gladiator Asterix sponsored by citizen Sextus Apollonius Scipio

IV. Gladiatrix Veneta sponsored by citizen Titus Labienus Fortunatus

V. Gladiator Hulkhoganus sponsored by citizen Gaius Popillius Laenas

VI. Gladiator Brutissimus sponsored by citizen Gn. Salix Galaicus

VII. Gladiator Maturus sponsored by citizen Amulius Claudius Petrus

VIII. Gladiator Gladius sponsored by citizen Gaius Lanius Falco

IX. Gladiator Titus sponsored by citizen Servius Cornelius Cato

X. Gladiator Iustus sponsored by citizen Gaius Marcius Coriolanus

XI. Gladiator Dentatus sponsored by citizen Tiberius Apollonius Cicatrix

XII. Gladiator Mendax sponsored by citizen Numerius Cassius Niger

My thanks to all those citizens who applied to take part in this event. All
applications were chosen on a first come, first serve bases, and I tried to
fit in as many gladiators as I could. If you were not selected in this
event, please do not let it discourage you from taking part in the Cerealia
Art Contest or the other activities that will be opened during the
celebration starting on the 12th.
