Subject: [novaroma] Cerialia: Gladiator Combat VI Brutissimus vs Mendax
From: Amulius Claudius Petrus <pkkt@bconnex.net>
Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2002 22:42:44 -0400

Salvete cives et amici,

Romans, this is the last day of gladiator combats! We have seen many
gladiators and their sponsors become victorious during this contest,
although one champion has yet to be determined. Today in this arena we will
discover who this champion is! As your Junior Curule Aedile it is my great
pleasure as it as been for this whole competition to present to you todayıs
match! The arena is prepared and the two remaining gladiators are about to
enter, so I shall introduce all in attendance to our competitors!

His sponsor calls him a psycho man from the wild tribes in North Hispania.
He drinks blood of a bull before fighting and he tortures his enemies with
frightful songs. This would be the wild Brutissimus, sponsored by citizen
Gn. Salix Galaicus!

His opponent is from the Greek town of Euboia, where his sponsorıs father
purchased him as a young man shortly after he was born. He was originally
called Skylax (Greek for puppy dog) and was a house servant. He grew up with
his sponsor. Now as a young man, he fell out of favour with his owner who is
also his sponsor and was entered in the combats as a death sentence. He has
managed to stay alive through a few battles and may prove to be a great
gladiator in the future! This is the strong Mendax the retiarius, sponsored
by Numerius Cassius Niger!

The two competitors look like they are in a hurry to begin the match and
they salute the officials immediately. I raise my hand to signal them to
take their positions. They do so and after a few moments I drop my hand to
begin the last match of the Cerialia!

Brutissimus gets off to a very strong start. He looks very confident and
calmly approaches his opponent looking for a chance to strike. He sees one
and stabs out with his sword, piercing the upper leg of Mendax!

Mendax looks surprised and confused. He quickly dodges around his opponent
and circles around to put more room between himself and his opponent.

Brutissimus still looks very calm as he slowly approaches his opponent once
again. He unleashes another attack on Mendax by slashing out at his
shoulder. Mendax attempts to scramble away, but is too slow and he is hit.
The impact of the sword causes a huge open wound to be created across his
chest.

Mendax stumbles around a bit, and then unexpectedly jabs his trident out at
his opponent. This attack almost hits Brutissimus but he is able to deflect
the trident with his shield at the last moment.

Brutissimus responds by taking a mighty swing with his sword at the
stumbling Mendax. Mendax is able to deflect the attack with his trident
quite easily.

Mendax gathers his remaining strength and tosses his net out at his
opponent. It catches on Brutissimusıs sword and he stabs out at his tangled
opponent. Even though Brutissimus is covered in a net, he manages to block
the trident with his shield.

Brutissimus keeps his calm and quickly finds his way out of the net. He
tosses it away and quickly dodges around behind his opponent.

Mendax loosing massive quantities of blood manages to turn around and face
his opponent. He then prepares for another attack from Brutissimus.

Brutissimus quickly runs up to his opponent. Mendax looks like he could fall
at any moment, and he has almost no reaction to the approaching Brutissimus.
Brutissimus takes advantage of his stunned reaction and quickly stabs him
finishing the match!

Congratulations to the last victor of the Cerialia gladiator combats,
Brutissimus and his sponsor Gn. Salix Galaicus! I also wish to thank all of
those citizens who sponsored a gladiator in this celebration. You made it a
great success, and I look forward to future gladiator combats in the coming
months!

Subject: [novaroma] Cerialia: Gladiator Combat IV Hulkhoganus vs Dentatus
From: Amulius Claudius Petrus <pkkt@bconnex.net>
Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2002 22:38:58 -0400

Salvete cives et amici,

Fellow Romans, this is the second last battle of the Cerialia! As your
Junior Curule Aedile I am pleased to present to you todayıs competitors!
They are entering the arena now, so I will get right down to introducing
them to you!

Our first competitor is is an experienced fighter. He is compact (5'4"),
but powerful (215 lbs). His steel coloured hair is closely cropped, except
for his Gladiatorıs top knot. He is a German and former Chieftain, captured
in Caesar's Gallic Wars. This is the fearless Hulkhoganus Magnus, sponsored
by citizen Gaius Popillius Laenas!

His opponent is also a man that once led soldiers against the glory of Rome.
He is a fierce Numidian, once leader of a nomadic war band in Africa. He
fought against the Roman presence in Numidia, but was defeated and taken
prisoner. He is a very tall black male and was trained in citizen Tiberius
Apolloniusı personal gladiator school. Now he claims to be ready to face any
opponent! This could be no one else but the savage Dentatus the retiarius,
sponsored by citizen Tiberius Apollonius Cicatrix!

The two competitors are really making the crowd go wild, flexing their
muscles and getting everyone into it. After quite a while they finally
salute the officials in the arena and I rise my hand to signal them to take
their positions. They do so and I quickly drop my hand and the match begins!

Hulkhoganus looks slightly uneasy now that the fighting has started,
although his opponent looks slightly too confident and is looking to impress
the audience. This causes him to let down his guard for just a moment. This
proves enough for Hulkhoganus to stab out at him. The attack almost inflicts
damage, but Dentatus is able to get out of the way at the last moment.

Dentatus responds by quickly whipping his net out at his opponent. The net
is easily pushed away with Hulkhoganusı shield.

Hulkhoganus is now searching for an opportunity. He sees one and slashes!
Dentatus is almost decapitated, but he moves away at the last moment.

Dentatus seems to want to put more room between himself and his opponent. He
jabs out with his trident causing Hulkhoganus to jump back and away from
him.

Hulkhoganus does not let this faze him. He is upon Dentatus again, sees his
undefended arm and strikes. The sword tip hits flesh and a great wound is
inflicted on Dentatusı right upper arm.

Dentatus looks more worried now. He looks like he is fearful of attacking.
Suddenly he manages to lash out with his trident, although his opponent is
able to block with his shield.

Hulkhoganus responds by launching a quick attack, stabbing down at his
opponent. Dentatus avoids the attack by diving out of the way.

Dentatus, now on the ground, quickly gets into a crouch position and
prepares to defend himself in this awkward position.

Hulkhoganus charges his opponent screaming a barbaric war cry, and quickly
stabs down at the legs of his opponent. Dentatus does not even have time to
react and his foot is quickly disabled by a gruesome wound from the attack!

Dentatus seems to be struggling to fully stand and remains in the crouching
position awaiting another attack.
Hulkhoganus responds by launching a poor attack that is easily deflected by
the trident of his opponent.

Dentatus spots an undefended area on his opponent and quickly stabs out with
his trident. This attack is blocked just as quickly with Hulkhoganusı
shield!

Hulkhoganus, attempting to unbalance his opponent, takes a might swing with
his sword smashing into the trident and knocking over the crouching
Dentatus.

Dentatus quickly scrambles to get on his knees and blindly swings his
trident in panic. The attack completely misses its target.

Hulkhoganus takes advantage of his opponentıs poor position and takes a
mighty swing again with his sword. This time Dentatus is unable to block the
attack and the sword lands on his neck ending the match!

Congratulations to the victorious Hulkhoganus Magnus and his sponsor Gaius
Popillius Laenas!

Tomorrow is the last day of gladiator matches so be sure to come back to the
arena and see who will be out last gladiator combat champion of this years
Cerialia!

Subject: [novaroma] Cerialia: Art Contest Champion

Salvete cives et amici,

Before I announce this yearıs winner of the Cerialia Art Contest, I would
like to thank all of those who participated in this event. Your
participation made this event a success and added a huge amount to the
spirit of celebration during these games. I hope you all enjoyed this event
and I look forward to seeing you all take part in the games of future
festivals.

All of our judges did an excellent job and I thank them for doing their part
in organising this event. Those that submited work did not make the task of
judging easy. This contest was very close and the winner was determined by
only one percentage! All of the work was utterly suberb! Congratulations to
you all!

Nevertheless, when it comes down to numbers, there can be only one victor.
Therefore it is my great pleasure to present to you the champion of this
yearıs Cerialia Art Contest MMDCCLV A.U.C.!

The champion, as decided by the average of all marks awarded by the judges,
is Julilla Sempronia Magna! Congradulations!

Subject: [novaroma] CERIALIA OFFICIALLY CLOSED
From: Amulius Claudius Petrus <pkkt@bconnex.net>
Date: Sat, 20 Apr 2002 00:30:09 -0400

Salvete cives et amici,

The Cerialia celebration comes to an end today. The past eight days has been
a wonderful experience for me, and I have been honoured to have this chance
to organise this event. Yet, this event has not been solely run by me. I
wish to publicly thank my Scriba Aedilis Lucilla Cornelia Cinna. Her
contribution to this festival has been very valuable. The judges of the art
contest have also played a vital role. My sincere thanks to these citizens
for their contribution.

Overall, I believe this celebration fulfilled the goals set out for it. I
tried to incorporate the religion of Rome into many of the games. As a
nation we came together to sacrifice to Ceres, and to honour her, while we
enjoyed friendly competition and entertainment. I personally feel as if this
celebration accomplished much, while covering a wide area of different
interests. I hope you all feel the same way.

The Cerialia is now at an end, however there are many ludi to come. I hereby
pass the duty of the direction of the next ludi celebration, the ludi
Florales, onto my honourable colleague Senior Curule Aedile Caeso Fabius
Quintilianus. I look forward to seeing the excellent event he will put on
for the populace!

As your Junior Curule Aedile I now officially declare this Cerialia for
MMDCCLV A.U.C. closed! May Ceres bless this young nation and all of its
citizens in the comming year!

History references:
FLORALIA, or Floreales Ludi, was celebrated at Rome in honour of Flora or
Chloris. It have been instituted at Rome in 238 B.C., at the command of an
oracle in the Sibylline books, for the purpose of obtaining from the goddess
the protection of the blossoms. The celebration was, as usual, conducted by
the aediles, and was carried on with excessive merriment, drinking, and
lascivious games. The Floralia were originally festivals of the country
people, which were afterwards, in Italy as in Greece, introduced into the
towns, where they naturally assumed a more dissolute and licentious
character, while the country people continued to celebrate them in their old
and merry but innocent manner.
