Salvete Omnes,
It is my pleasure to announce that the Collegium Pontificum has voted in
Antonia Cornelia Octavia as a Pontiff of Nova Roma!
Antonia Cornelia is the founder of the "Temple of Religio Romana", as many of
us know from her regular event postings. Antonia has shown herself to be very
knowledgeable in and active on the behalf of the Religo Romana, and it is a
pleasure to have her occupying an 'official' Religio position inside NR at
last! I publicly ask that Antonia Cornelia's name be added to the Priesthood
pages of the Nova Roma website.
As a Pontiff, Antonia is responsible for helping to coordinate the various
festivals and rituals inside Nova Roma. I am sure she will do an outstanding
job, and hope that all will join me in welcoming her as a member of the
Collegium Pontificum!
Ave, Antonia Cornelia Octavia! :)

Salvete,
Due to my work schedule I have been unable to make announcements regarding
the results of the recent Collegium Pontificum vote.
I am pleased to say that the Collegium Pontificum has made three new
Priesthood appointments, and one new Pontiff appiontment. I will post each of
these individually after this message, so that each of our new Religio
officials may have an opportunity for personal recognition. :)
In the meantime, I am also pleased to announce that the Collegium has voted
in three new items:
I. Changes were approved for the "guidelines for NR Priesthood" and will
shortly be appearing on the NR website. We've tried to make the process more
'user friendly' and have also lessened some of the restrictions, such as
making the minimum Citizenship requirment three months rather than six
months. The changes should be appearing this week at:
http://www.novaroma.org/religio_romana/guidelines.html . \
II. An "oath of office" for Prieshood has been adopted, to mirror the oath
taken by civil magistrates. This oath has been adopted to allow new
Priesthood to publicly pledge themselves to responsible action on behalf of
the Gods of Rome, and will be witnessed by the Comitia Curiata as the
magisterial oaths are.
III. "Minimum Standards" of involvement for Pontiffs have been adopted, as a
measure to ensure active participation of those responsible for coordinating
the Religio Romana in Nova Roma. Similar guidelines have recently been
adopted by the Senate. These standards include participation in a set number
of Collegium votes yearly, as well as a requirement for scholarly work and
research, and/or public Religio participation before the Citizens of NR.
As mentioned above, I will be announcing the new members of the NR Priesthood
immediately, and I invite the Citizens of Nova Roma to join me in
congratulating them! :)
Valete,
Marcus Cassius Julianus
Pontifex Maximus

Salvete Omnes,
It is my pleasure to announce that the Collegium Pontificum has voted in

Vesta within Nova Roma. I publicly ask that Lucia Ambrosia Valeria's name be
added to the Priesthood pages of the Nova Roma website.

helping to keep a sacred flame to Vesta on behalf of Nova Roma itself. She

Actually, I was not aware of any of the above - neither that actual
staples had been found (I'd be rather curious to learn the
shape/thickness that was used, given the working characteristics of
silver), nor that it had been in a Roman fort. As I'd mentioned before,
if someone came up with real evidence - either for or against - I'd be
willing to change my mind on the issue, given that all I had were
guesses. I still don't know the context in which they were found - e.g.,
if it was in a box marked "To be used for wound closure", this would be
fairly indicative :) - but I'm willing to concede the point.

Umm... sinew is dirt-cheap and easily come by; silver isn't. Also, it
would not be cut until the wound healed: that's the purpose of either
one. Staples may well have been in use, but I wouldn't think that it
would be for this reason. As well, reforging certainly was not a simple
operation, especially for a small item like that - but given the working
characteristics of silver, they could be spread, disinfected, and
re-used.
> Battlefield surgery is not pretty today and even less so back then.
I think you would be surprised. Battlefield surgery is a highly
specialized field today, with great emphasis on cosmetics and post-op
rehabilitation, at least in the US. Surgery is not generally intended to
be "pretty" - except for purely cosmetic operations, that's not what
it's for - but I believe most people would agree that effort expended in
that direction is a Good Thing for a multitude of reasons.

Staples _require_ at least semi-decent alignment; stitching _creates_ it
by pulling the edges together. I believe that stitching would be much
quicker and more reliable in a triage scenario. <shrug> Again, however,
the existence of these staples argues that they _were_ used, no matter
what the reasoning was behind it.

Serapio;
Welcome aboard!!! There are just the two of us at the moment in the
Historical Roman Architecture List,
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/HistRomArch
but between us we should be able to get some "good stuff" put up on the
net. I have been searching my past archives for additional materials,
written in the past to add to the list. Perhaps other interested in
this area will join us.
This List was, after all, created for the purpose of determing who was
interested in Ancient Roman Architecture, with the eventual idea of
perhaps putting together a Sodalitas.

ANTONIVS GRYLLVS GRAECVS PONTIFEX OMNIBVS QVIRITIBVS SALVTEM
This is one of the dies nefasti (N), a day on which no legal action or
public business can take place.
Today is the third and last day of the Lemuria in honour of the Lemures. The
Lemures
are the haunting ghosts of the dead, usually of wicked people or of those
who did not receive the proper rites after death. These are not received by
the Gods of the Underworld and as such are condemned to roam and to haunt
the living.
But today the ghosts that concern us are those of the Manes themselves, who
come from underworld ruled by Dis to take from the living what his theirs by
right.
The Lemuria are held on 3 consecutive odd numbered days: 9, 11 and 13 May.
Rites are performed at home by the "paterfamilias" (family father) and these
are well documented in [Ovidius, Fasti, V.419-454].
At night, the paterfamilias gets up from bed and walks barefoot throughout
the house, making the "mano fico" gesture (see attached image) in order to
protect him from the shadows of the dead. He washes his hands with water
brought from a spring. He takes some black beans. He throws the beans
several times over his shoulder without looking back, while saying nine
times:
"haec ego mitto, redimo meque meosque fabis"
Tr. "These I cast; with these beans I redeem myself and mine [i.e. 'my
family']".
The shadows are supposed to pick up the beans behind him. After throwing all
beans he performs another ablution washing the hands and clashes some bronze
pieces. He then asks the ghosts to go away by saying nine times:
"Manes exite paterni"
Tr. "Manes of our ancestors, go away!".
After this he looks back and the Lemures are surely gone, for the rites were
correctly accomplished and the dead have taken what is theirs by right.
The Vestals are preparing the mola salsa since May 7th and this will
continue until May 14th (tomorrow).
I remind you that Maius is the month of the old and the old and the dead.
Maia, the Lares and the Manes and their mother (Mater Larum) are specially
honoured.
Di vos bene ament

Berenice, Egypt:-------
I am in Egypt, in Berenice, a port of the Red Sea during the Ptolemaic
and Roman ages. It was in ancient times the main port for commercial
links (terra marique) between the East and the West, joining the trading
interests of Asia, Arabia, and Africa with the Red Sea and the
Mediterranean Basin. This important trading port worked well from the
3rd Century B.C. up to the 4th Century A.D. In that long stretch of
time, the high point for Berenice was from the 1st Century B.C. up to
the 1st Century A.D.
>From the East arrived spices, silk, pearls, coconuts, incense and myrrh.
>From the West arrived the "young singers," (white skinned girls) for the
Indian harems, red coral, glass, wheat and wine. From Berenice, Eastern
goods were transported through the desert using large camel trains.
Within forty days the goods arrived in Appollonius Mayna (today Edfu), a
riverport on the Nile, and then on to Alexandria by river barge. From
Alexandria, the goods were disbursed throughout the Mediterranean.
Western goods followed a reverse path from Alexandria back upriver and
across the desert to the Red Sea port, to be further sent to ports
bordering on the Indian Ocean.
Excavations are still "in course" and when I was there they had not yet
reached the period stratum for which they were searching. Actual
preliminary excavations which have been made to date, however, are
giving great promise, together with a large amount of detail regarding
the life of the people who lived and worked in Berenice, together with a
significant amount of information about the commercial organization of
the period that was found there.
One of the main problems in Brenice was "watering" the population as
well as supplying water to the ships using the port. A great part of
the water in use came from wells but it has not yet been determined
whether the water supply was piped into the city or brought there by
"water trains" of animals from the well-heads.
In regards to food supplies, the bounty of the sea was heavily relied
upon, and the escavatons clearly show that dependancy. Also in Berenice
there was a very diverse ethnic population, each different group with
thier own religion, customs and beiefs. Archaeologists have found
evidence of several different faith / belief patterns (Egypyian,
Greco-Roman, Eastern and Christain).
In a drift (low hill), at one of the early excavation sites,
archaeologists have found about 200 osipolkol (written Ostraka--baked
clay
fragments) in Greek, dating back to Claudius and Nero. In addition,
there have been found the records of the custom house, with lists of
traders, thier ships, and the goods brought into the port from East and
West (for instance --- wine from Italia). Archaeologists have also
uncovered a building which was used as a "goods shed" In this "shed"
were found several amphoras and the fragments of a staue (perhaps
Isis).

Special Note:
I have made arrangements with one of my reenactor friends to "scan in"
Serapio's sketches onto the Internet, I have to mail them to
Massachusetts, but they should be on the list in a week or so.
