Salvete omnes,

I think honourable Serapio has touched a critical
point concerning the future of NovaRoma.
I was going to expose my concerns about the
experiences I am having as an acting Praefectus of the
Sodalitates Egressus for France. My duty consists in
gathering information, finding new citizens and
promoting NovaRoma. The typical interview with a
potential contact (individual or society) ends short
of any further discussion. The reason is simple: we
are considered as a political organisation more than
anything else. Although people find this political
aspect rather interesting, they prefer to join
knowledge only based organisations. My arguments
saying that we are a quite new micronation with a lot
of potential or that in order to preserve and promote
knowledge, we need a strong political system, do not
have the expected results. In short, people do not
want to spend too much time on politics (but maybe is
this a very french trait,...grin, grin...), nor
building a new society and they think that the
knowledge we offer is limitated compared to what is
found elsewhere.
>From these observations, and if I may give my opinion,
which is not a free critic but I hope some
constructive idea, it might be intereting to:
- gather the knowledge we have got so far on a
dedicated site. This would be a very convincing tool
for potential candidates or partners.
- decentralize the sources of income of the Republic.
(on this I join honourable Serapio). Promoting our
Republic and the roman heritage needs a lot of
ressources (human but as well money). These financial
needs cannot be fulfilled only by the tax paid by the
citizens. Sponsoring could be a good source of income
(if not the main one...) Sponsoring rules vary from
one country to the other. For example, in Germany and
France, sponsors can deduct from their income taxes
any fund given to a LOCAL non profit organisation.
Although I did not yet check this thoroughly, I sense
there a real possibility. But this would lead, I
think, to a new organisation of the Provinces.
I hope that this comments will be profitable (and that
this post has not been to long...)

Very respectfully,

=====
Sextus Apollonius Scipio

According to my university professors, the sentence: 'timore quid ego habeo,
non ego sum gaudans' can be translated with the following: 'What I possess
in fear, I am not a person who can be happy.'

timore would then be understood as an Ablativus.

Most probably, this is to to be understood as a graphiti in Pompeji (I don't
know the background of this sentence) and is therefore not Ciceronian latin,
but more vulgar.

Subject: [novaroma] Attn. Patres Familiae - Pending Gens Members
From: <3s@hsk-net.de>
Date: Fri, 17 May 2002 02:52:01 -0500 (CDT)
Caius Flavius Diocletianus Censor S.P.D.

To all Patres Familiae:

Currently, we have around one hundred applicants waiting for approval for gens membership.

I would like to ask all patres familiae to check their profile pages for pending gens members and to decide about their gens membership.

Also, we have a couple of patres familiae who seems to be incommunicando. In that cases, I intend to use the Edictum about Patres Familiae (issued by Censores Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix and Lucius Equitius Cincinnatus http://www.novaroma.org/tabularium/edicts/20010302lec.htm). That means that the pending members will be rejected (and informed, of course..) and the gens will be set closed by the Censors.

I would like to say a heartful thank you to all Patres Familiae, who normally decide directly about pending gens members. Quick responses are a great help for both the Censors (who can finish a case quickly) and the applicants (who donīt have to wait for a longer time until they are approved). You help Nova Roma grow.

Bene Valete
Caius Flavius Diocletianus
Censor

I simply don't know how to use this program. I will try again, also
reading your messages on the Latinitas mailing list.

For the languages it is a little bit more difficult. I a lot of
case you can use SERMO _______ (masculine adjective) or LINGUA_____
(feminine adjective).
For instance: sermo latinus /lingua latina
Otherwise you can also express it with SERMO or LINGUA and genitive
of the people: SERMO/LINGUA THAILANDIENSIUM

Here below oyu find the adjectives:

> > > Thai/Thailand
> > Thailandienses, ium/Thailandia, ae
Sermo thailandicus or thailandiensis/ lingua thailandica or
thailandiensis

> > > Turkish/Turkey
> > Turcae, arum/ Turcia, ae
Sermo turcicus/ lingua turcica

> > > Afrikaans

the language depends on the nation.

> > > Azerbaijani/Azerbaijan
> > Azerbaianenses, ium/ Azerbaiana, ae
sermo azerbaianensis/ lingua azerbaianensis

sermo bielorussicus/ lingua bielorussica

Quick start on Windows: just get the poedit program through the links
on
http://kde-i18n-la.sourceforge.net
get the file you want to translate through the CVS Repository link on
the same page

Translate and send me the file I will upload it.

Dutch based South-Africa

Those country/language names are all in the desktop.po file they allow
you to switch between languages when using kde.

AVE MANI VILLI LIMITANE

Thank you for the informations.

> Dutch based South-Africa

I am sorry: the name of the country is RES PUBLICA AFRICAE AUSTRALIS
I don't know the name of the people: i think you can call them CIVES
(REI PUBLICAE) AFRICAE AUSTRALIS or AFRICANI AUSTRALES.
I also don't know the latin translation for the language: you could
say LINGUA, AFRIKAANS APPELLATA or
LINGUA, QUA AFRIKAANS APPELLATUR.

AVE SEXTE APOLLONI SCIPIO

I am happy of reading your participation to the discussion of this
important issue.

I would like to invite all citizens of Nova Roma to expose their
own ideas concerning new ways to finance future novaroman activities
and to establish collaborations with many other organizations, or
even to notify and discuss any problem they find related with
financial matter, taxes, etc.

I repeat that , in my opinion, Quaestors in particular should deal
with this matter, since they are "financial magistrates".

Scipio propose to create, if I well understood, a website
containing only the results of the studies of Nova Roma: it would be
a presentation for those organizations that see in our Res Publica
just a "political play" instead of seing a group of people making
study, research and divulgation.

Perhaps it wouldn't be necessary to create a new website. It could be
sufficient to create a new big area with an appealing design in the
already existent website of Nova Roma.

Could I ask the opinion of our illustris Consul and Webmaster? Would
it be possible to create a new section, easily reachable from the
Home Page, containing for example the results of the studies of our
Sodalitates, linked, for instance, with the section dedicated to the
reenactment? I think this could be a good presentation, and perhaps
on this section it could be possible to collect more registrations to
the newsletter "The eagle" outside Nova Roma.
In this way maybe the incomes from the newsletter could increase.

Salve Honorable Sextus Apollonius Scipio!

I just want to ask You if You are aware of the fact of the work that
we in Provincia Thule are doing together with many good citizens
mostly from Provincia Hispania in creating the Academia Thules ad
Studia Antiqua et Nova. This is a very serious attempt to build a
real on-line University. There are two links from the main web-page
of Nova Roma (http://www.novaroma.org/main.html) to the Academia
homepage at http://www.insulaumbra.com/academiathules/

The Academia at the moment have four different kind of courses going
on or coming soon (Basic Nova Roman, Ancient Roman History, Roman
Philosophy, Religio Romana) all planned to be issued at different
levels (I, II and III). I the near future more courses are going to
be organized (Roman Law, Roman Military, Latin and Roman Archeology).
We have even more ideas what courses to organize in the future.

I think that the plans and ambitions of the Academia will fulfill the
"dreams" and "wishes" of most people who want to seriously study Rome
and things Roman at a Academic level. I think that You should send
your friends and interested groups to the Academia and see if they
will not change their mind about Nova Roma after a visit there. At
the moment every student will have to be a citizen of Nova Roma
though.

Remember that this is only the beginning, the leadership of the
Academia (The Tresviri Academia Thules) have serious plans for a real
University in the future. If You have questions about the Academia I
advise You to contact Scriba ad Res Externas Academiae Thules et
Tribunus Plebis Illustrus Gnaeus Salix Astur (salixastur@yahoo.es) or
Procurator Academia Thule (Headmaster/Rector) Honorable Caius Curius
Saturninus (c.curius@welho.com).
