Salvete cives,
I want to congratulate honorabilis Consul Octavius "pro sua celera responsione" to my inquiry about the allocation of citizens among centuries. This is an important issue to ensuere a correct representativeness of all citizens and for guarantee that the result of elections represent the balanced will of the Roman People. It is my duty as Tribunus Plebis to appeal other magistrates to make efforts in this directions in order to guarantee the rights of Populus Romanus.
Prior to modifications introduced by Consul Octavius the allocation was less representative to that we have now, we must thank Consul Octavius because its efforts in the direction to guarantee rules of "fair play". I wisht to reiterate my words of thanks to such an a good effort.

Salvete Omnes,
I am pleased and honoured about the appointment of
Illustrious Caseo Fabius Quintilianus. His knowledge

As well, his appointment underlines the co-operation

The following text was written as an account of a three day reenactors
festival in Venlo, Netherlands, by my real and roman uncle. The text was
written to tell the citizens about the get-together in a funny way and to
make them attend other such occasions.
Translation was done by the aspiring translator for the German language,
Tiberius Annaeus Otho, since the original text was in German.
CALO to all citicens of Nova Roma.
First of all: Warning! Reading this new speech of Caius Annaeus Lucanus
Otho, who has just returned from the Netherlands, more exact, from Venlo,
can lead to damage to your brain. The writer does not account for any damage
done according to US and EU laws!
The cause for this preamble is, that our real roman neighbours in Venlo,
the soldiers of the Legio VI Victrix, who are longtime friends of mine,
have
warned us, the Cives Rauraci et Vicani Vindonissenses, that people like
food
inspectors can put up unimaginable laws and edicts, not only for the Legio
VI Victrix, but also for us, who, from the point of view of the barbarian
northern lands, come from the deep south, or better, from the core lands
of our wonderful imperium. Therefore we saw ourselves forced to get a written
statement from our most talented and to some of you already well-known
scribe Tiberius Annaeus Otho, containing some information about not
accounting for anything, if somebody wanted to eat food prepared in our
kitchen. This text was then made public everwhere on our Forum.
While trade was not so good during the first part of our three-day stay
in
the more or less barbaric northern lands and their inhabitants, my people
could, at the end, look back on successful sales and almost sold out
businesses. However, there was much more cause for happiness than only the
capitalistic part. There was the nordic weather: After huge food- and
incense offerings to Sol, the God decided to shine almost in southerly
fashion in the almost cloudless skies and the winds were kept back in
contrast to other times, so that our fearful cries in helvetic dialect "Hold
the tents" were never heard. None the less we used our voices to cry out.
In the arena with the gladiatorial combats. The pannonic men started rather
slow and hit each other with no strength - we, however, wanted blood! Only
in the last fights, when we were seated according to our rank, on our curule
chairs, there were duels, which did not stand behind those in the Colonia
Ulpia Traiana or even in Rome. Especially the small Retiarius was favoured
by our hearts, who was called Minimus, even though his real Greek name was
said to be Thomas. This Minimus had, during one of his walks around the
city, seen our dear Caesonia and he was so captured by what he saw (and
the
other way around), that he did everything to please her, which he did. At
least he was visited almost immoraly long in the gladiatorial school by
Caesonia after each combat and when the surviving fighters were transportet
to Spain in a cart, I thought that I saw a small tear in the eye of Caesonia
...
Once more, however, it came true, what the great Proximo used to say: WIN
THE CROWD! At least we almost cried our lungs out of our bodies between
wonderful sips of northern italian red wines and most sweet dates:
Mi-ni-mus, Mi-ni-mus! Thanks to all the Gods that we had fed the only 19
years old aspiring champion only too well in our kitchen. Due to this fact,
we did not loose too much money. Alltogether different, was the situation
for the Legio Sexta Victrix. The Primus Pilus, my old friend Claudius Suebus
Dentatus, threw, at the end of the fights, huge amounts of money into the
arena, where the ordinary people fought to get some of it. This to our very
hearty laughs at the not very honorable sight.
I could tell you much more: My lengthy pilosophical discussions with the
head of the gladiatorial school, my brother in Mithras, who still has not
managed to learn one of our cultural languages, so that even after 10 years,
I still have to talk to him with a translator. I could tell you how very
at home our senator and Propraetor Germaniae, Caius Flavius Diocletianus,
together with his wife and son, felt with us. I could tell you about the
wonderful things in the local museion, whereas the building itself was much
more interesting to me. I could write in detail about the exquisite food
from our own kitchen, which we take with us even on our longest journeys,
where Susanna Quincitlia Fornaria Lucullina and Paulus Nobilis Conductor
Manus without tyring prepared meal after meal for us, supported by Caesonia
and Tamaris Quinctilis Vara, from morning to evening, and how we then also
had to frequent the kitchen of our hosts, so as not to be unpolite, and
how
we once enjoyed a huge feast in the rooms our mansio. I could tell you about
the success of our fresko maker, Aulus Frigius Cobi, with his colorful,
magnificent works. The splendid last minute sales of our Tiberius Annaeus
Otho, the most praised materials, style and grace in make of the necklaces
and armchains, which Roscia Annaea Pia presented and sold, and the perplex
admiration of the people for the works of art, which our ladies from the
textile branch, Irrenia, Clara and Arita brought to light with their weaving
chairs and the table for making felt, where wonderful ribbons, colorful
cloths, as well as hats and so on were produced. And then there was our
most
faithful and untyring worker, Cathina, our maker of oillamps, whom we had
to send on holiday by edict of the legatus in order for her not to get
overworked. And last but not least there only remains my co-duumvir, friend,
partner, brother in magistrature and in official business superior, Quintus
Quinctilius Varus Galili, about who's work I could fill pages!
What has to be said about myself can be done shortly. I have drawn myself
back from the strenous working live during such long trips abroad, bothered
by many pains and aches and I am already planning my new means of
transportation for the future. Starting today, I am looking for 14 nubian
Slaves. I need three for the front right, and left, three for the back left,
and right, all goodlooking, with the same height and strength, and then,
to make up the number 14, I need two in reserve, with an interimistic order
to keep away the flies with huge fans made of ostrichfeathers ...
Yes, my dear Nova Romani, such was the life of our last few days! To all
those, who did not manage to visit us, to be welcomed as our guests and
be
spoiled by our splendid banquets and feasts, who did not see the games,
to
all those, I would like to put it into your hearts to try and make it to
one of our next reenactments. For instance on the 16th day of the month
Junius,
near the legions camp, better the near museion, in Vindonissa in Helvetian
country (Switzerland), or on the 25th day of the month named after our
deified Augustus in our splendid Colonia Raurica (Augusta Raurica in
Switzerland), and last but not least during the last weekend of the seventh
month according to the old calender, that would be the 28th and 29th of
September, in the Limescastel in Aalen, not too far from the border to
Barbarian Land, where we, the fanclub, so we hope, can welcome back in the
arena our Minimus from the Familia Gladiatoria Pannonica, in good health,
stronger and more victorious than ever.
In the meantime, time flies, I must tell my slave to get the message to
you
as fast as possible. Greetings to all of you and a hearty VALETE SEMPER,
CALO

Mistress;
Recently, I posted on the NR Main List a short treatise about Berenice,
Egypt a coastal city on the Red Sea. This trading center was active all
during the Roman Period, with it's high point between 1st Century B.C.
and 1st Century A.D.
The treatise was based on the field observations of Dominus Praefectus
Serapio during his travels as a member of the military staff of Italy,
just this year.
He reports that Berenice, Egypt was a major trading center which
recieved both goods from the Far East, and the Far West. The Eastern
Goods were recieved in Berenice by ship saling up the Red Sea, and then
transferred to camel trains moving across the desert (approximately 40
days) until they reached the Nile River. The Goods were then
transferred to river craft which took them to Alexandria, for transfer
to cargo ships bound for all points in the Mediterranean and North
Africa. Some may even have gone on to Roman Britain. Western Goods
were transported in the reverse order to Berenice where they were bound
for Far Eastern Markets.
Trade goods from the Far East included food spices, silk, glass or store
pearls, coconuts, incense, and myrrh.
Trade goods from the West included "young singers" (white girls for
Indian Harems), red coral, glass, wheat and wine.
The trade between Rome and Egypt was so important to Rome that the "corn
ships" were a vital part of the Mediterranean trade views. (If ancient
times wheat was referred to as "corn." Corn in the Americas was
referred to as "Maize.")
