As much as I would like to see ALL aspects of the Roman culture, economy and
military recreated, such things are impossible. So that makes our model
flawed, but we can still get a better "feel" for what the ancient historians
were commenting about if we carry out what we can physically accomplish then
waiting till forever to do anything. We have already learned a lot about the
Roman government, unknown problems that were never mentioned in books or
studies about the subject, have to come light, and we have attempted to solve
them in the Roman Way. (Apologies to Edith Hamilton.)

Of course you know that the six Vestal Virgins were chosen by the Pontifex

Actually we are not 100 percent sure if this WAS always true. These old
rituals as you stated, are codified by Numa according to our sources, but
Plutarch in his Life of the same, indicates that this was not the case by
late 90s AD.

Again that is speculation on your part. This might be true when Rome was
collection of 7 communities, however, by the early Republic, that may have
already been undergoing a change. The office had very political overtones to
it by then, families were vying with one other to get their daughters to be
chosen due to the prestige involved.
Vesta has always been an important part of the State religion of Rome. This
goes back to the fact she is a very old goddess, hearth goddesses are, most
Romans knew her well, taught about her at very early age, and her rites were
observed in most Roman homes. Her State worship for the well being of the
Republic was very important, hence the elaborate rituals that were
incorporated into the Religio structure.

That said, I believe Vesta will be understanding of our trials and
tribulations after all, we are calling on her again, after 17 centuries! We
have made some modifications to the original concepts true, but they are
necessary, and I'm sure the goddess is appreciative of our efforts. After
all we will be 5 years old next March. And this is after numerous schisms, a
civil war, a division of members and numerous controversies. I'd say the
goddess continues to watch over us. As far as I'm concerned our Virgo Maxima
lives, and she has just been appointed an assistant. And until Cornelia is
declared legally "dead" in NR, she remains our head Vestal.

Thanks a lot Pontifices A. Grilus Graecus and M. Cassius Julianus for your
patience and for your kind answers.
And, Nerva, my God! I feel ashamed, I didn't want to be presumptuous, maybe
it's a cultural matter, southamerican people like to explain their thoughts
and positions with many details. I was also scared, not knowing the way to
write to you. I'm terribly sorry.

Valeria Constantinia.

Welcome back. I thought you might have decided to stay in Italy. The daggers
look nice. I'm in the market for a good spatha if you see one.

Subject: [novaroma] Nova Roma--Ancient Rome

Mistress Valeria Constantinia;

To begin with you should not be sorry about your beliefs. Such is what
makes Nova Roma what it is. Please do not be upset by the comments of a
few in Nova Roma who sometimes speak more harshly than they intend to,
for they are good people with good intentions.

The Pontifex Maximus, Marcus Cassius Julianus has spoken wisely and at
length regarding your comments, and although I am certainly no expert,
his words seem wise to me. Quintus Fabius Maximus too, makes a good
deal of sense. He is a noted historian in the Roman era, and his ideas,
and research have much to commend them.

As one who has often disagreed with his colleagues and those opposed to
Nova Roma, as well as those who work within it, I invite you to stay
with us. Your obvious sincereity, knowledge of Ancient Rome, and your
willingness to defend your views indicate that you would be of
significant value in our new republic and I for one would welcome the
opportunity to know you better. If you agree, I invite you to contact
me, and I will be pleased to answer any futher questions that you may
have.

Respectfully;

Marcus Minucius Audens;
Quaestor, Senator, ProConsul et Praefectus Sodalitii

Fair Winds and Following Seas!!!
