Avete Omnes,
To find the forum has moved to another "Hill."
Ah well.
My trip home was most excellent. Annia and I got to see some family
members we hadn't last year and strengthened some bonds which had been
neglected.
Annia and I spent the better part of 3 days mining the geneological
archives in Pittsfield, MA. Anyone of our New England - New York area
Cives, the "Silvio Conte" center is a wonderful resource. I found
information in the Censi, city directories and other resources which
disproved some family stories, proved others and showed relatives
neither my parents nor I had known existed.
I also had the chance to meet several of my co-religionists all too
briefly for lunch on Saturday. I expected 3 people; 12 came (8 adults
and 4 children). Quite a genuinely heart warming experience.
We're glad to be back in our own home, though.

Does anyone in NR know of any restaurants in New York City that have
an ancient Roman atmosphere, either in cuisine or decor? I would be
very much interested in learning of such establishments for possible
destinations to go for field trips.
Thanks in advance-----

The Caroligian Empire is not the Holy Roman Germanic Empire,
and even Charlemagne's Empire had its capital and center of power in
Aachen (Saarland).
Good organization does not mean colonization/installation of franks,
just putting some in political important points: the future nobles.
The Normands also organized very well their English conquest giving rise
to the first "pure" feodal system, putting french speaking normands as
head of most feuds. This did not change so much english.

No the Carolingian empire is not the Roman Germanic Empire,
the Roman Germanic Empire was founded by Otto I in the Xth century.
Charlemagne's and his son Louis's Empire included France, but their base
of power was in today's Germany. Their successors : Lothaire only
reigned on Italy/Provence and initially a small N-S part of Europe
(Lorraine) which he rapidly lost. The last Caroligian Emperors ruled
only over Provence and a very small part of Italy.
This means France was part of the Carolingian Empire from 800
(Charlemagne crowning) to 843 (Verdun Treaty given the Empire to
Lothaire), and never part of the Roman Germanic Empire.
While Italy or at least the northern part of it was always part of the
Carolingian Empire and after that part of the Roman Germanic Empire
from 800 to 1805. At some point Sicily was even the center of power of
the Roman Germanic Empire (Fridriech II)

800 in 500.000 ! Strong influence indeed.
The number is nearly the same in portuguese spanish etc. And there much
more words of anglo-saxon origin while France was never colonized by
Anglo-Saxons.
After all most of us eat "tomat.." and "chocolat.." and none was ever
colonized by Aztecs.

Salve amici,
The Holy Roman Empire was the medieval state that
embraced most of central Europe and Italy under the
rule of the German kings from 962 to 1806. It was
considered to be a restoration and continuation of the
ancient Roman Empire, although in fact it had little
in common with its predecessor. Earlier, the Frankish
king Charlemagne had revived the same name. His Roman
Empire lasted from 800 to 925. In 962, Otto I of
Germany and Pope John XII cooperated in a second
revival. Threatened in his possession of the Papal
States by Berengar II, king of Italy, John begged Otto
to come to his aid. Otto did so, and the pope solemnly
crowned him Emperor of the Romans as a reward. From
this time, the German kings claimed the right to rule
the empire.
So we were not talking about the same empire.
Concerning the extent of the frankish empire, a good
map is better than a long talking, please visit:
http://www.ac.wwu.edu/~stephan/Rulers/notes.html
France has been a part of the united frankish empire
from roughly 500 to 880.
Concerning the frankish vocabulary heritage, I just
wish I was using 500000 french words!! I forgot to
mention that the 800 frankish words used today in the
french language are very common words to be compared
to the number of words being actually spoken. The
percentage is then not insignifcant.
Respectfully,

I guess the fact that Italy (where all has begun) and Spain (as Hispanic

L. Salix Cicero--Ooh! Have a good time in Rome! And
while you're there, I recommend a restaurant called La
Rampa. It's located near the Spanish Steps (Piazza
D'Yspana, I think) and the American Express office.
By the way, if you like Parmesan cheese on your
food--you'll either have to adjust to Italian
subtlety, or else get as much of it as you can before
they take it away. (g) Italians don't treat grated
Parmesan with the disrespect that we do in the States.
They don't keep it in little shakers on the table,
all day. They bring a little bowl of the fresh stuff
to your table and sprinkle a bit on your food for you.
And then they take the little bowl away. (sob!)
I never thought I'd find myself craving Parmesan
cheese in Italy, of all places. (g)

Socellius--Translation...Hm..."Caveat canes." might
work for 'Beware of the dogs.' The second sentence
contains a possessive, which means that the speaker
wants to warn another person of something belonging to
or pertaining to a dog--such as, 'Beware of the dog's
teeth.' My very poor Latin isn't up to translating
that. (g)

No, this is means "May he beware of the dogs". The correct translation
is "Cave Canem" (beware of the dog) or "Cave Canes" (beware of the dogs).
There's also a beautiful floor-mosaic, found in Ostia (or was it in
Herculanum?) which shows a dog and the words "CAVE CANEM".

Probably just a typo from Socellius for "dogs". Or maybe not a typo but
something that's getting in the general usage according to the pattern:
one FAQ, two FAQ's
one RPM, two RPM's
and so on, often used with Three Letter Acronyms [TLA's ;-) ] often used
in the web.

That would be: "Cave canis dentes", the posessive being marked by the
Genitive casus "canIS". Cave (beware of) requires the Accusative casus
(like canEM, canES, dentES ...)
Hope that helps

Salve Socellius,
There's a mailing-list in NovaRoma that focuses on learning latin
(Latinitas and also ScholaLatina), however, I don't know if the latter
is still in function, since the teacher left NovaRoma, however, there
are a lot of great stuff in the archives.
One of probably many links for learning latin can be found by searching
google for the words "learn latin" (or the same in Spanish, for you).
This quick search gave me this page, which looks like a good start:
http://www.du.edu/~jcalvert/classics/latin/learnlat.htm
To find more results, just start the search by clicking the next link.

Good luck!

I think, you'd best send a mail to the censors censors@novaroma.org
who might help you, if you give them your real name and address (with
which you registered)
