You might consider mailing some to the baronies in the SCA regions in which
there is a high concentration of Nova Romans and Roman re-enactors. Having
been a Roman enthusiast in the SCA for years, I know how much I would have
enjoyed getting in touch with others of similiar interests.

In regards to the current discussion on the Germanic origins of the modern
days of the week, it is to be remembered that the Visigoths only became
foederati on a large scale basis following the drubbing they gave the Empire
at Adrianople in 1131 AUC. The Empire really didn't have a lot of choice
about taking them on in a preferred status as foederati instead of numeri or
cunei. The Vandals were contemporary to the Goths and they became foederati,
as well. The magister militum Stilicho was of Vandal extraction. The
Vandals, Burgundians, Suebians, and Franks were seen as a counter to the
growing power of the Goths. The Franks were among the least civilized of the
bunch.
The Merovingian Franks snuffed out the last of the northern Gallo-Romans in
the late 5th century AD when they creamed Syagrius. They then turned on the
Visigoths in southern Gaul and drove them into Hispania. Just as the
Visigoths had displaced the Vandals to north Africa earlier in the century.
After about 250 years of Merovingian rulership based in the central and
southern areas of Gaul, Charlemagne's grandfather dispossessed the
Merovingian crown (which had been primarily a figurehead for more than 50
years previous) with the Austrasian Franks from the north.

Salve, Titus Labienus!

No, everything but the tribe makes sense to me. I've
been moved from Cen. 172 or so to 143, and I'm listed
as an assidui. I presume that the tax payment is the
reason for the move to a higher century. I'm just
puzzled by the tribe thing. I was in a rural tribe
whose name began with an A, and now, I'm in Suburana.
:)

Thanks for the link; I'll go read up on it.

An excellent idea; there are a few Romans I've met in An-Tir, and one
of the chief reasons I joined SCA, in addition to doing something fun
with my 16-year old son, was to meet other Romans and spread the
word about Nova Roma. For instance, I went to May Crown recently and
probably gave away 4-5 Nova Roma coins over the course of the weekend.

Granted, it's a slow process, but it's hard to beat person-to-person
contacts, and sadly, I've never had the opportunity to meet a fellow
cives NovaRomanae in the flesh!

Citizens of Nova Roma,

it is with most of sadness that I must withdraw my
candidacy for the office of Quaestor.

This magistracy requires to be at least 21 years
old and I am 20.
I would like to thank Consul Marcus Octavius
Germanicus for the kind way he notified this fact to
me.

Please, be sure I only had good purposes; I didn't
want to cheat anyone.

However, I have no intention of diminishing my
dedication to Nova Roma: according to the Lex Iunia de
Magistratum Aetate (emended by the Lex Vedia) I
already asked both the Consuls to place my exempion
request before the Senate. If the Senate will approve
it, I will come again in front of you as a candidate
for the office of Quaestor.
I thank you all and apologize for this situation.

Hi there, I noticed one of the members has had trouble with bouncing
emails. Maybe yahoo is having technical problems because over the
last 2 days it took me more than 30 tries to sign up with yahoo
groups. I got messages saying " cannot hook up page to server,
working to resolve problems". I am still having problems activating
chat, just getting blank screens. Perhaps these problems are related
and will be rasoved soon. Meanwhile I send my greetings to everyone
in this group. I have always been fascinated with ancient Rome. I
thought I knew a great deal about Rome but after reading the
comprehensive home pages of Nova Roma I realize how much more I need
to learn. I am waiting on citizenship (membership) so I am not using
a Roman name yet. Best regards - Michael Kelly

You have not to thank me for the honesty! We have a Law, and it is
a good one: for me it is absolutely natural and suitable to follow
it, as it should be for every good citizen.
Thank you very much for your kind words and for your hope!
