What happened to the Germania Inferior plans? They failed to be put up for
three consecutive Senate votes, and consequently the future provincia has
run empty.

CENSOR Lucius Equitius Cincinnatus Quiritibus SPD

I want to first thank my colleagues Censor Diocletianus et Consul M Octavius
for their splendid support during my recovery from a serious back injury.
Mille gratius vobis ago!
Secondly, I want to apologize to everyone for my absence. I was simply
unable to do much more than survive. Please be patient as I continue to
recover. For some reason I'm able to do many things, but sitting at the
computer and typing causes me pain after a short time. I am able to do more
every day though. One good thing to come out of it was that we were able to
have our computer fixed during the time I was down.

My favourite Roman is Marcus Aurelius Antoninus. He was born during
the reign of Hadrian. As a young child he was named Marcus Anius
Verus but his high born parents both died young. He was first adopted
by his grandfather and he recieved an excellent education by well
known tutors. At 17 years of age, his uncle by marriage, Auerilius
Antonius, who had just become emporer adopted Marcus. Auerilias
Antonius had no sons. He changed Marcus'name to his own then married
Marcus off to his daughter called Faustina. Marcus and Faustina had 5
children but only one survived, Commodus. Now Marcus had another
adopted brother from his uncle called Lucius Verus. Marcus made
Lucius a partener in government so Rome had 2 emperors in charge for
the first time. During this time there were many problems throughout
the Empire. There were invaisions by the Barbarians, famines, plagues
and natural disasters. About 167 AD Marcus left his brother in charge
in Rome in order to be with his legions on the Danube. He held off
the invaders there and then for a brief time he went to Asia to stop
a revolt of Avidius Cassius. He then returned to the Danube region
where he lived a tough life with his legions. There he wrote his
reflections on life in a series of writings known as his Meditations.
These meditations show great humanity as well as humility. His
Philosophy on life was very stoic. For example he said that every day
you should deny yourself 3 things you want to do then force yourself
to do 3 things you do not wish to do. You then build character! His
thoughts and traditions have been admired in the Christian world even
though he persecuted some of them ( eg. not serving in the army etc).
Marcus Aurelius died on duty from disease in 180 AD. I always have
admired this great Roman because he suffered the hardships with his
men showing he would ask no one to do what he would not do himself
and in his reign he turned a weakening Empire around and made it
greater than before. Had there been a more Emperors like Marcus after
his death, perhaps the Roman Empire would have lasted well into the
middle ages or longer, we would have avoided the dark ages,
technology may have evolved faster and earlier and who knows, maybe
we would have colonized Mars by now and be heading for the stars. ----
- I hope this is satisfactory to you Marcus Scribonius Curio
Britannicus. I am waiting on citizenship so I hope I am allowed to
contribute things or ideas before hand. If you wish any further
editing or have any comments I would be glad to know. Vale for now -

Subject: [Nova-Roma] The San Diego River
From: jmath669642reng@webtv.net
Date: Wed, 12 Jun 2002 22:22:59 -0400 (EDT)
ProConsul Maximus;

Your comments remind me of three ideas that I have been meaning to share
in regard to archaeology. Ah yes, how we used to laugh at the grand
name of the "river" since most of the year it is approximately six
inches across and buried in the brush choking the bottom of the canyon
or lost in the storm drains further up the gorge.

However, there is a photograph in the cupula of the old church above and
on the South side of the canyon mouth. It was taken at the hieght of
the 100 year flood in the early twenties, I believe, and shows quite
clearly why the San Diego River Canyon is so wide and deep, for such
small river. The picture shows the river at the mouth of the canyon,
taken from that very window, as being 1/2 mile wide!!

Just before I left San Diego in 1978, we were "treated" to a "fifty
year" flood, and this deluge flooded the Convention Hall and many of the
stores in the shopping centers in the canyon center, as well as all the
underground parking areas. Buildings which have since been rebuilt,
improved upon, and many times have been increased in size. The road
which crosses the canyon over a storm drain some 30-40 feet wide and at
least 20 feet deep was flooded out to the depth of 15 feet, and several
vehicles trapped on that road were lost in the flood. That is one heck
of a lot of water!!!!

This is a very interesting aspect of archaeology, when we must take into
consideration the extremes of floods, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes /
tidal waves, tornadoes and other natural phenomena that regularly occur
in nature. When you consider the fact that 100 year floods have
occurred 20+ times since the beginning of the Empire and a number of
times in the Republic as well, the face of the world begins to change as
we become more sensitized to our natural surroundings.

Deep in the desert of Northern Mexico along the Eastern slopes of the
Sierra De Juarez Mountains, and on the western shore of Laguna Salada (a
dry lake bed), while investigating Indian Rock Carvings, and mano-matate
holes in living rock used by the Indians to pound dry seeds into a
flour-paste, one would think that this area would seldom, if ever, see
more than just an inch or less of water a year, but further up a small
dry watercourse was a great round pit in solid rock, with a smooth stone
"pipe" which emptied into this "caldron". The pipe was the obvious work
of erosion forces as there were no indications that it had been worked
or enlarged by tools. Inside there was probably fifty gallons of water
(about 1/5th of the "caldron's" full capacity, and inside this water
reservoir was literally thousands of wild honey bees. Around our camp
and the desert floor for miles was a silence and deadness such as I have
never experienced before, but within 20 yards of that "caldron" the
sound of bees was so loud that it sounded like the inside of a hive must
sound on a still day.

I was struck with the idea, that the world is not always as it seems, to
our short-lived experiences, and when those of us who have an interest
in re-establishing the lives and cultures of long ago, we must always be
willing to look at what we see today through the colored lens of what
has occurred in the long periods of time, as well as the "extremes" of
natural phenomena, the results of which are there to see clearly if one
knows what to look for.

Just recently (the last year so) archaeologists were contemplating the
unusual burn marks in around Herculinium. For years the makrks had been
there, but they did not fit any known kind of fires which would have
covered such a large area. Recently, the eruption of Mount Saint Helens
in the state of Washington (U.S.) gave some clues to these marks. When
St. Helens exploded, there was a great cloud of dust which moved down
the mountain, and it was determined by vulcanologists that this cloud
was superheated gas fueled by the temperatures inside the volcano tube.
Archaeologists looking at this St. Helens phenomena made some
measurements and came to the conclusions that what had happeed at St.
Helens was probably what happened at Herculinium. A great cloud of
superheated smoke and gas rolled down the steep sides of Vesuvius and
literally baked every thing in it's path, immediately igniting wood and
flammable objects on contact and suffocating the residents who had taken
refuge deep within the structure arches of the city itself. When these
arches were excavated the missing bodies of the residents of Herculinium
were found, just as had been predicted by those who had done the
comparison research.

Respectfully;

Marcus Minucius Audens

Subject: [Nova-Roma] ATTN [Religio Romana]: Idibus Iunii (on June 13th)
From: "Antonio Grilo" <antonio.grilo@inov.pt>
Date: Thu, 13 Jun 2002 16:24:57 +0100
ANTONIVS GRYLLVS GRAECVS PONTIFEX OMNIBVS CIVIBVS SALVTEM

This is a dies nefastus publicus (NP), a day for special religious
observance on which no legal action or public business can take place.

The Idus of every month are sacred to Iuppiter. An white ewe is sacrificed
to Iuppiter by the Flamen Dialis.

Today is the aniversary of the temple of Iuppiter Invictus [Ovidius, Fasti,
6.650; De Sanctis, SR, IV.2.i, 132 n.24], probably the same celebrated on
April 13th. If the temples are the same, one of the celebrations is probably
the aniversary of a restoration.

Today is also the first day of the "Quinquatrus Minusculae" (the "Maior
Quinquatrus" being held on 19-23 Martius), which is held from June 13th to
June 15th. This festival was mainly celebrated by the 'tibicines' (public
flute-players who played at religious occasions to drown out any ill-omened
noises; they also attended funerals and enlivened feasts) in honour of
Minerva, their patron deity [Festus, De verborum significatione, on
'Minusculae Quinquatrus'].
Each year the guild of 'tibicines' met at the temple of Minerva [Varro, De
Lingua Latina, 6.17] and then went to the temple of Iuppiter for a feast
near the shrine of the Minerva. Livy [Livius, Ab Urbe Condita, 9.30.5 seq.]
tells how in 311 BC, after they had been forbidden by the Censors to hold
their traditional banquet, they had withdrawn to Tibur until the Senate
persuaded the Tiburtines to return them; this was achieved by a ruse. After
their return they were allowed "for three days each year to roam through the
city in festive robes ('ornati'), making music and enjoying the license that
is now costumary, and to those who played at rekigious ceremonies the right
of dining in the temple was restored".
Thus the 'tibicines' roamed the city for three days, wearing masks and long
robes ('stolae longae', which were women's clothes). They must have livened
Rome up, especially if they played 'in the midst of serious business, both
public and private' [Valerius Maximus, 2.5.6].

Di vos bene ament

Salvete omnes,

It's time for the next question! The first person to answer
yesterday's question correctly was Gaius Cornelius Ahenobarbus, who
knew that the female child gets the feminine version of their family
nomen.

He asks: Which Gallic king sacked Rome, and what famous Latin phrase
is attributed to him?

If you know the answer, please e-mail me at
marcusscribonius@hotmail.com with your answer, your Roman name, and
the question you would like to ask.

Bene valete,
Marcus Scribonius Curio Britannicus.

Franciscus Apulus Caesar Omnibus S.P.D.

Finally I can have a week-end of relax far from my daily hard work. From
June 14 to 17.
I'll in Bonomia (Bologna) for a big rock concert (within great artist like
Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Santana, Chemical Broth., etc.). In my little trip I
hope to meet some Nova Roman citizens like the italian Gens Solaria and
Marcus Iulius Perusianus.
I'll come back in June 18!

Valete

Subject: Germania Inferor/Gallia (Re: [Nova-Roma] Propraetors Needed)

Let me answer this for you. As far as I know those plans have been
shelved at the present time.

When my colleague and I were both willing to present the agenda item to
the Senate we were asked by the individual who was going to be the
propraetor to delay any presentation of that item to the Senate. This
happened around February, if I recall correctly, and to date I have not
received any notification to resume that process.

In addition to this the other individuals who were actively working
toward the establishment of Germania Inferior resigned their Nova Roman
citizenship and quite frankly no one else has really worked for the
establishment of the provincia more feverently than those individuals.
To the point that between their resignation and your posting I have not
heard of a single comment regarding the establishment of Germania
Inferior.

Finally, I am now somewhat concerned about breaking up the provincia of
Gallia due to the fact that a large provincia with a larger population
has yet to have someone come forward who meets the qualifications to be
a Propraetor. What would be the use to further break down a provincia
when the larger provincia doesn't have a governor? I would rather have
a larger provincia with a governor than two smaller provincia's each
with no governor.

In the future when there is a larger population base in Gallia I hope
that we can reopen the issue of Germania Inferior and make its existence
a reality.

I hope this answers your concerns.

Respectfully,

Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix
Consul of Nova Roma
