Subject: [Nova-Roma] Agenda for the Coming Month

Avete Omnes,

It brings me great pleasure to approach you again and discuss my plans
for the coming month. I realize I am a bit late in approaching you, I
have had major surgery done on June 3rd and was released on June 8th.
Since that time I have been recovering and wasn't sure I would be able
to present anything. That uncertainty is gone and this month will be a
very productive month, IMHO. Without further comment let me discuss my
agenda:

Comitia Centuriata:

1. Consolidation and minor modification of the procedures of the
Comitia Centuriata.
2. Lex Cornelia Senatoria

Comitia Populi Tributa

1. Minor Modifications of the procedures of the Comitia Populi Tributa

There might be some other laws that might be included...but at this
point this is definitely going to be the agenda as of this date.

I plan to have the entire texts of laws posted by Sunday the 16th of
June. I have requested from our Augur approval on the 20th this would
give 4 days to make any possible revisions of any proposed law before
the Contio begins.

Respectfully,

Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix
Consul of Nova Roma

Avete Omnes,

I forgot to add that we need to elect the following:

A Rogator
A Curaetor Differum

Both of these offices will be voted in by the Comitia Populi Tributa.

Very Respectfully,

Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix
Consul

Subject: [Nova-Roma] RE: Girl child's name
From: "autumnmoon9" <elzerwn@netscape.net>

Salve,
I think it depended on several things. Plebian or Noble, family
status and wealth, etc.
I know usually the first girl child was given the feminine version of
her family name: ex. Attus Julian's daughter would be Julia.
Otherwise (in especially poorer families) the daughters (and sometimes
sons) would literally be numbers or ranks: ex. Prima, Secunda, Tirtia,
Majora, Minora.
When these women married, they would then take on their father's name
as described above.
i.e. Minora Justina marries Julian Flavius and becomes Justina
Flavius.

My question is:
What was the typical schooling for Roman boys and girls?

Salvete omnes,

The next question is upon us. Many people answered yesterday's
question correctly, but the first to do so and to include a question
was Marcus Arminius Maior, who knew that the Gallic King who sacked
Rome was Brennus, and that the famous latin phrase attributed to him
was "Vae Victis".

He asks: What Roman was elected Consul most times during the Republic?

If you think you know the answer, please e-mail me at
marcusscribonius@hotmail.com with your answer, your Roman name, and
the question you would like to ask.

Bene valete,
Marcus Scribonius Curio Britannicus.

MOS: The person who was going to be Propraetor? Now, candidacies may have
been presented to the Senate, but that individual in question (if it's him
I'm thinking of -- Puteanus), never said this on the Germania Inferior list.
Plus, despite his drive and enthousiasm, no one delegated him to the
authority of delaying this process, or asking it to be delayed. At any rate,
the list has run empty, and so has the future province (of course there are
still people, but no one really alive except Cicatrix and myself).

> To the point that between their resignation and your posting I have not
> heard of a single comment regarding the establishment of Germania
> Inferior.

MOS: I don't know what their exact reasons of resigning were, but some of
them may have been the perpetual stalling of the Germania Inferior plans.
Whether this continuous stalling was the Senate's fault, or that of a few
individuals, it was certainly a cause that ceased activity in the area.

> Finally, I am now somewhat concerned about breaking up the provincia of

MOS: I agree, of course. At this time, what is really Gallia (France), is
seeing some activity, while Germania Inferior (Belgium, the Netherlands) is
virtually dead. But some months ago, the situation was exactly the other way
around. The "Gallia Magna" as it exists now was intended to split up
eventually, but the founders had always thought both regions would grow
equally. I'm afraid that this problem is going to haunt Gallia for a long
time.

A lot of arguments can be made for a split. First is that the Flanders
(northern Belgium) and the Netherlands share the same language and roughly a
common history. Second, the name "Gallia" is unhistorical for these regions.
Third, while the area is limited in magnitude, it has a common population of
22 million people. Provinciae have been created in the past, which only got
a governor later on I believe. Or provinciae where the opposite happened:
they were created with a governor present, but lapsed into a coma ever since
the governor left or went inactive (Sarmatia, Britannia for a long time,
Thule for a long time...).

> In the future when there is a larger population base in Gallia I hope
> that we can reopen the issue of Germania Inferior and make its existence
> a reality.
>
> I hope this answers your concerns.

MOS: Thanks for your elaborate answers!

Vale bene,
Solaris
