First of all, please allow me to welcome you to our Forum. It is very
nice to receive a message from a bright kid like you :-).

What can you do in Nova Roma? Well, you can try to do what I and many
others much, much older than you try to do every day: you can try to
learn a little bit more about ancient Rome. It is a very interesting
subject, especially if you already like History.

Where can you do it? You have several sodalitates to choose from. A
sodalitas is a special interest group, centered around a specific theme
or area of knowleddge.

You also have the Academia Thules, that provides free online courses.
These courses are not specifically aimed to young people, so I am
afraid that you will have to endure the slowness and lack of
intelligence of all those adults ;-), but you could still learn
something new.

You can do almost anything an adult can do (except voting and being a
magistrate, for the moment being). I hope you do find something
interesting to do here and that you learn to love ancient Rome like I
and many others around here do. Good luck, and never forget that, if
you do not know something, you can always ask :-).

I think the reconstruction in this page (alredy recommend by someone):
http://dekart.f.bg.ac.yu/~vnedeljk/VV/

Is a good reconstruction concerning rithm and alternation of breif and long
vowels (a feature that is better preserved in italian than no other romanic
language)

Italian has 7 seven phonological vowels /i, e, ê, a, ô, o, u/ (^ denotes a
more open vowel) that partially reflex the 9 or 7 vowels of popular late
Latin: /i, (î), e, ê, a, ô, o, (û), u /. In this respect Italian is no more
close to Latin that Portugêse or Spanish (Spanish diphtongs /we/ and /je/
are reflexes of tonic /ê/ and /ô/). With respecto to consonants the are some
doubts about exact natura of the following Latin phonemes:
- /r/ that is markedly different in almost every language in Europe.
Probably Latin is similar to /r/ of Italian, Spanish and Catalan (but no to
/r/ of French and Germanic Languages).
- /l/ can present some differences (velarized / non-velarized) in Romanic
Languages.
- /s/ Iberian Romanic Languages seem to have a more tracted articulation of
/s/ (possibly by substrate influence), but possibly Etruscan substrate also
gave raise to a retracted pronunciation of /s/ in some Latin areas.

Salue Tiberi Annaeus Otho,

Reductions of /-ae/ to Italian an Romanina /-e/ shows that /ae/ is a
diphthong (and must be uttered in one step). Also is coherent with this
conditions the fact that Greek /ai/ > Latin /ae/, for example ´Aischylos >
Aeschylus. I order to pronunce /ae/ correctly it is useful to pronounce
first /ai/ and try to "deform" this <i> into <e>, the Latin sound /ae/ is
very similar to modern pronunciation of /ai/ in most Romanic Languages
(ancient French <ai> was quite different from the modern pronunciation of
<ai>)

>sounde like the a sound in 'hat'.<
Thie sound of <a> in english <hat> is a different sound of Latin <ae>
(although an identical grapheme "ae" linked is used for both). <a> in <hat>
is front open/open-mid unrounded vowel, Latin <ae> is a diphthong similar to
/ai/ = [aj]

I dont know very things about Retro-Romanic or Rhaetic Language of
Switzerland but at least in vowels seems quite innovative language. A
sample:

'foot' 'grass'
Pouplar Latin *pede *herba
Sardinian pe erva
Portugese pe herva
Catalan peu herba
Occitan pe erba
French pied herba
Italian piede erba
Romanian __ iarbâ
Spanish pie hierba
Rhaetian Sursilvan pei jarva
Rhaetian Friulian pid __
Vegliot (Dalmata) pi jarba

More concretely palatisasion of consonants are also displayed by Rhaetian
Languages:

'night' 'hip' 'fish'
'fist'
Latin noctem coaxam piscem pugnum
Rh. Sursilvan notg queissa pesch pugn
Rh. Engadine not __ __ puoñ
Rh. Friulian ñot __ pes __

By these reason really it is difficult to me to accept that "Roman" of
Switzerland is more close to Latin.

AVETE QVIRITES

After a few days, only other 13 people will still have the
opportunity of buying a Venator who will fight during the Venationes
of next Ludi Apollinares (july 6th-13th).
Should we think that you are afraid of several little animals?

Buy a fighter in the Forum Boarium! He will cover your name with
glory defeating lions, tigers, bulls, rhinoceroses and other beasts!
If you join the Venationes Programme you will be considered as
possessing 10,000 Sestertii. Use them to buy the strongest Venator on
sale and to make him/her train in the right Ludus!

Visit the website of the Ludi Apollinares and enter the Venationes
section at:
http://www.geocities.com/mcserapio/aediliscicatrix

If you want the glory, you have to conquer it!!!

Salvete omnes,

Time for the final question! Unfortunately, despite the fact that
there were some good guesses, no one got the correct answer. I am
therefore repeating this question, since no one seems to know the
answer. (Yes, a direct challenge to all our scholars, lol)

The question is: Which were the biggest Baths of Rome?

If you know the answer, please e-mail me at
marcusscribonius@hotmail.com with your answer and your Roman name.

Bene valete,
Marcus Scribonius Curio Britannicus.

I am _very_ glad and honored to have You on-board again. I have my
hands full, but if can find the time I will most certainly study
along this line.

I share You point of view, but since the beginning of the Academia we
have used this oath, I am grateful that You used it, maybe in the
future I will put together a separate one for the Praeceptores and
Administrators of the Academia.

Yes I will be honored to do this. I know that You also will be
invited to the Thule Academia list (the Academia Staff list) as soon
as the weekend is over.
