PONTIFEX ANTONIVS GRYLLVS GRAECVS OMNIBVS CIVIBVS SALVTEM

This is one of the dies nefasti (N), a day on which no legal action or
public voting can take place.

Today is the aniversary of the 'constitutio' (decree) for the construction
of the Ara Pacis Augustae (Altar of the Peace of Augustus), constituted in
13 BCE. The sacrifice of a cow was performed "in Campo [Martio] ad Aram
Pacis Augustae" (in the Field of Mars at the Ara Pacis Augustae) in a
ceremony where the Fratres Arvales participated.

The month of Quinctilis was renamed Iulius in 44 BCE in honour of the
deified C. Iulius Caesar. This month is sacred to Iuppiter.

Subject: [Nova-Roma] NR Civ2 Game Scenario
From: "gcassiusnerva" <gcassiusnerva@cs.com>
Date: Thu, 04 Jul 2002 07:38:38 -0000
The talk about computer games made inspired me to make a Nova Roma
scenario for Civilization 2. I tested it already but it needed work,
since the Parthians were not interested in attacking and the
'Barbarian Union' settled down into peaceful development of their
lands. Boring!

I haven't tried Civ 3 yet, but I understand it has no scenario builder
yet.

Anyway, in my scenario the Roman Empire is divided into 5 giant
provinces. The object is to maintian the alliance with the other Nova
Roma factions while keeping the Parthian Empire and Barbarian Union at
bay. Of course, if you can betray and conquer the other NR factions
and put all of the Roman Empire under your rule, that works too!

Each faction is named for a prominent gens in Nova Roma:

Cassian Romans, with their capital in Rome.
Fabian Romans---capital Carthage
Cornelian Romans---capital Athens
Octavian Romans---capital Londinium
Equitian Romans---capital Alexandria

The Parthian Empire is there, and will overtake you in scientific
research if you are not careful. The Barbarian Union is behind you
technologically, but is large and presents a real threat.

I'll upload it into the file library when it is finished and working
to my liking.

Subject: [Nova-Roma] Regarding Caeso
From: Kristoffer From <from@darkeye.net>

Salvete, omnes.

Caeso Fabius Quintilianus has recently suffered from a lightning strike
frying most of his hardware, thus enforcing 19th century communications.
He has been, and will be for some time, unable to access his e-mail, and
has only recently recovered use of his telephone.

He apologises for any inconvenience this may cause, but there are some
matters no man can plan for. He will do his utmost to return to
civilisation within the next three weeks.

Any important and urgent matters are preferably sent through me, as I'll
keep him updated on current events through daily phonecalls. Don't
expect any answers overnight, though, and please CC all mails sent to me
to his e-mail, tjalens.h@telia.com, as well.

He will, in the meantime, enjoy VERY limited internet access, which
means VERY sporadic correspondence will still be transmitted.

Valete, Titus Octavius Pius.

Salve,

How many centimeters are a Roman military Step? In the Bello Gallico all
measures are in steps and I haven't found its conversion to SI.

While I realize that this sort of thing is going to happen, as a game
designer of some note, and well known in ancient gaming circles, based on my
knowledge I would suggest the following changes to conform with historical
factiods:

Actually the Fabians or Aemellians should be there. It was their familes who
controlled Rome during the middle republic. If this is the late republic,
the Iulians or the Pompians should have control. Crassius was never well
liked in Rome, he was seen a mere money grubber, who achieved his power
during the Spartican war. As soon as he was killed at Carrhae much of the
upper class cheered.

> > Fabian Romans---capital Carthage
>
Carthage has always been the province of the Cornelians. They were the ones
who beat it and eventually conquered it The Fabians wouldn't even set foot
into it, unless compelled by the Senate as in the deputation sent in 218.

> Cornelian Romans---capital Athens
The biggest Hellenistic loving family were the Quinctians. Instead of
sacking Greece like he should, Titus Quinctius restored many of their old
institutions, after breaking the Macedonian hegemony. While most Romans
admired the Greek culture, they dispised the Greeks themselves, they saw them
as weak, effeminate, and indecisive. To a military culture based on strong
laws of conduct, the Roman consuls perceived the Hellenics as easy pickings
for the taking, removing much of their statuary and art, back to Rome after
successful Greek campaigns. Consul Mummius destroyed Corinth, just as Lucius
Cornelius sacked Athens. Plutarkhous says Sulla hated Athens so I doubt he'd
stay there.

Equitian Romans---capital Alexandria

That's very fitting.

Frankly I can't see the Arcacids being very scientific at all. They were a
steppe people, who adopted many of the traits of the different people they
fought. The most successful was a horse archer armed with a composite
recurve bow, and armored nobles. They lacked infantry, and siege equipment.
The Romans usually better of them in pitched battles, Even in the defeat of
Crassius, three legios got away.
Antonious lost his rear guard and supply train, because his horse was
composed of Armenians and Arabs, which rode away, rather then fighting.
(Apparently their pay was in arrears.) The Sussanids replaced the Arcacid
Parthians because of their higher military technology.

The Barbarian Union is behind you, te> chnologically, but is large and

As they should.

Salvete,
>>>Caeso Fabius Quintilianus has recently suffered from a lightning strike

Sorry if this sounds . . . warped, but I was most relieved when I realized
it was Caeso Fabius Quintilianus' computer that suffered the lightning
strike, and not he himself. It would have been most tragic if "frying most
of his hardware." had happened to him.
