Salvete omnes,
I am cross-posting this message to the main list and the California Provincia list.
I joined Nova Roma after the last get-together in San Gabriel in May. Would it be OK with you if there were another get-together (a lunch or dinner?) of the Nova Romans in greater Angelopolis this summer, perhaps in late July or August?
On a related note, how many Nova Romans of Provincia California are affiliated with UCLA (students, faculty, staff)? I am a grad student at UCLA and would like to know who are the Nova Roman Bruins out there :-)
Have a happy, peaceful -- and safe! -- 4th of July!

This is your last opportunity!!!
Only other 8 people will still have the opportunity of buying a
Venator who will fight during the Venationes of next Ludi Apollinares
(august 6th-13th).
Should we think that you are afraid of several little animals?
Buy a fighter in the Forum Boarium! He will cover your name with
glory defeating lions, tigers, bulls, rhinoceroses and other beasts!
If you join the Venationes Programme you will be considered as
possessing 10,000 Sestertii. Use them to buy the strongest Venator on
sale and to make him/her train in the right Ludus!
Visit the website of the Ludi Apollinares and enter the Venationes
section at:

If you want the glory, you have to conquer it!!!

Salve,
I am not sure, but I believe, that 1000 steps are the equivalent of 1 mile.
The roman step was always made up of two steps, so it is actually a doublestep.
The first step being made by the left foot and the second by the right foot.
1000 such doublesteps = 1 mile = 1607 meters
1 doublestep = 1,6 meters
one step = 80 centimeters
When Caesar writes of steps, he almost always means the doublesteps!!!
mille passuum = 1 mile = 1000 doublesteps!!!!
Hope I could help, Tiberius Annaeus Otho

[Nova-Roma] Re: NR Civ2 Game Scenario |
From: |
"gcassiusnerva" <gcassiusnerva@cs.com> |
Date: |
Fri, 05 Jul 2002 07:52:43 -0000 |
|
Salvete,
The Nova Roma Civ 2 scenario should be ready sometime next week
since I am going for a weekend trip. To play it, you will need either
Civ 2 with the Fantastic Worlds add-on, OR Civ 2 Multiplayer Gold
Edition. It will not work with just the original Civ 2.
I'm uploading to the file library a screenshot of a small part of
the game map for the scenario. The screen shot is from the first test
version of the scenario, so the finished game will look somewhat
different, but pretty similar.
While I like the idea of historical scenarios, I chose deliberately
not to make this Nova Roma scenario too historically based.
One reason is that the game Civilization 2 does not really allow for
much historical accuracy. Only seven civilizations can play at a
time; one human player and six AI civs, or 7 people in multiplayer.
Sadly it is not possible to have many independent barbarian tribes.
Secondly, the diplomacy, while much better than the original
Civilization game, is too limited. You can't trade cities or
territory for example.
Third, it is a wholly city-based game. You can't have massive
population movements and village level societies like real life
barbarian tribes. Only the game Barbarians do that, but you can't
talk to or negotiate with them.
So since the game itself has these limitations, I opted instead to
make a semi-historical scenario. The game map is a modified Europe
map that comes with the game itself. The Roman Empire is at about
it's second largest extent, from Brittania to Syria. All of the
various Roman and Parthian cities are placed in the appropriate
locations {as well as they can be for a game map}. The "Barbarian
Union" are the Mongols re-named. {The real game Barbarians, those
annoying Red guys, are turned off and will not appear in this
scenario} The "Barbarian" cities are named for real Barbarian tribes,
even though there was no Barbarian Union in real life. And lastly,
the city of Rome is called Nova Roma in the game.
There were several Gens I could have picked as the default 'Roman
Factions', but I chose Cassia for Nova Roma just because Cassius is
the founder of NR. But any player can customize the game. You can
open the Cheat Menu and re-name all the leaders and the names of their
factions. So you could have a 'Fortunatas' runnion the 'Labeinian
Romans' if you like. Then, just save the new game as a scenario, and
that is all there is to it.
As for the Parthians being scientific, well...they have to be in this
scenario just so they can pose a threat, even at easier game levels.
Otherwise it is too easy to conquer them and that makes for a boring game!
Also, the science research rate has been slowed down to keep the game
"ancient" longer. When I tried it I was developing gunpowder and
musketeers way too quickly!
I am told that Civlization 3 is great. Maybe they will come out with
a scenario builder and we can produce some really good historical and
imaginiary scenarios for Nova Roma sometime.

Salve,
Hard to say, not sure the exact distance covered in a military step
(which was 2 paces left foot then right foot). When I was in my
macronation's military a marching pace was 30 inches. Based on that
I would hazard a guess that a Roman military step would not have
exceeded 60 inches (5ft) or aprox. 180 centimeters.
Hope this helps you somewhat.

PONTIFEX ANTONIVS GRYLLVS GRAECVS OMNIBVS CIVIBVS SALVTEM
This is a dies nefastus publicus (NP), a day for special religious
observance on which no legal action can take place.
Today is the Poplifugia ("The Flight of the People"). The meaning of the
rite was already forgotten in the Republican period. It may celebrate the
flight of the people during the tempest that blew when Romulus ascended to
Heaven as Qvirinvs... Or it can remind of when the Fidenii attacked after
the Gauls sacked the city... Or it can mean a completely different thing.
Anyway, the rite may be linked to the Regifugium ('Flight of the King')
celebrated in February, and its observance may have consisted of some ritual
flight of the croud throughout the streets of Rome.
The month of Quinctilis was renamed Iulius in 44 BCE in honour of the
deified C. Iulius Caesar. This month is sacred to Iuppiter.

Salve,
This is a copy of the letter I have sent to the censors. I have
asked several times for help with this matter. Anyone out there have
any idea where the censors are? I have yet to hear a response back.
Should I just re-join anew?
Salve,
I have sent at least three messages asking for help with my name
change. My materfamilias has apparently left Nova Roma and the email
she has listed no longer works.
I am now the only member of my gens and wish to change my name and
form a new gens.
Please I need an answer.
My name is currently Caecilia Livia and I now wish to be known as
Majora Libria Livia.
Do the Censors no longer serve Nova Romans?
Does the Senate stand for nothing?
