!!!!!!!!!! LUDI APOLLINARES !!!!!!!!!!
Tiberius Apollonius Cicatrix ompnibus S.P.D.
Today, July 6, marks the opening of the Ludi
Apollinares, for the first time in Nova Roma!
All information is also available on our website:
http://www.geocities.com/mcserapio/aediliscicatrix.html
These Ludi are organised by:
Tiberius Apollonius Cicatrix – aedilis plebes
Manius Constantinus Serapio
Ianus Minicius Sparsus
Pompeia Cornelia Strabo – praetrix
Titus Labienus Fortunatus – praetor
I am proud to announce some wonderful events /
contests for the next days:
* Literary contest – in honour of Apollo and the
Muses! (contact Tiberius Apollonius Cicatrix)
* Venationes – pick your fighter and battle against
the beasts! (contact Manius Constantinus Serapio)
* Rhetorics contest – show us your eloquence! (contact
Ianus Minicius Sparsus)
* Roman authors – some postings about famous Roman
authors, for your pleasure!
Some historical information on the Ludi Apollinares:
During a particularly bad year in the Punic Wars (212
BCE), the Romans consulted the Sibylline Books and
were advised to hold Games in honor of the Greek god,
Apollo. The gods must have been pleased because four
years later when a plague broke out, they decided to
make the Ludi Apollinares permanent. Over the course
of the next two centuries the Romans extended the
length of the games until they came to last eight
days. The principal sacrifice was always on the 13th
of July. Two days of the festival were devoted to
games in the Circus, the rest to theater productions.
The first celebration of the Games was quite an
affair. The treasury of Rome paid for an ox and cow
and two white she-goats. They gilded the horns of all
the animals. The decemviri sacris faciundis took care
that the details of the Greek ritual were properly
fulfilled. The audience, all of whom wore garlands,
included married women, who offered prayers to Apollo.
It seems that part of the celebration included a feast
celebrated in front of the family house with the doors
left open. Despite the often complained of July heat,
these ludi were popular and on occasion, the site of
political protest by ordinary citizens. Cicero regards
with grim delight that in a theatrical performance of
a play which included the line, "It's our misfortune
that you are great," the audience infered a reference
to Pompey the Great and applauded like mad. One
attraction of these games (as well as the Ludi Romani
and Ludi Plebeii) was the mercatus (market or fair)
held for six days following the conclusion of the
games. Because July was the time to harvest barley and
beans, farmers who lived outside the city could come
to Rome for the ludi, sell their goods at the mercatus
and in some years, attend the Test of the Roman
Equites held on July 15.
ENJOY THE LUDI APOLLINARES!!!

[Nova-Roma] PROPOSED LEX: Patresfamilas to have email addresses |
From: |
Marcus Octavius Germanicus <haase@konoko.net> |
Date: |
Sat, 6 Jul 2002 09:02:34 -0500 (CDT) |
|
Salvete Quirites,
Here is one of several issues that I would like to present to the
Comitia this month.
The proposed LEX OCTAVIA DE PRIVATUS REBUS:
The Lex Cornelia de Privatus Rebus is hereby amended to include
the following:
Patresfamilias and Matresfamilias shall have access to the
email addresses of all members of their gentes and applicants to
their gentes. They may obtain this information from the
web site, when a tool for viewing this is available, or from
the Censores.
This will be beneficial in two areas.
Applicants to the gens sometimes fail to respond to the a
paterfamilias's initial request for more information. Unless
the PF keeps the initial notification letter, that prospective
citizen might never be contacted again, and might never be
approved for citizenship.
Secondly, after a citizen has been approved and joined a gens,
the avenues of communication might be accidentally lost. That
citizen might change address on the web site, but forget to
inform the gens; he might unsubscribe from the gens mailing
list. Any contact information the PF has saved might be
obsolete.
When this law passes, I would modify the "edit gens" page that
every paterfamilias or materfamilias already has access to,
so that it includes the email addresses of every current gens
member or applicant. This will eliminate the need for
patresfamilias to keep their own lists of addresses - and
reduce the danger that those lists will be obsolete.
Valete, Octavius.

[Nova-Roma] PROPOSED LEX: Setting the number of Centuries |
From: |
Marcus Octavius Germanicus <haase@konoko.net> |
Date: |
Sat, 6 Jul 2002 10:08:58 -0500 (CDT) |
|
Salvete Quirites,
In May, we passed the Lex Octavia de Centuriata, which would amend
the Constitution to allow for fewer than 193 centuries:
2. There shall exist a number of centuries, said number to be
set by law enacted by the Comitia Centuriata and not to exceed
one hundred ninety three, into which the censors shall divide
all of the citizens....
It refers to a law that would be passed later by the Comitia Centuriata
that would determine what the exact number of centuries should be.
Now, I present to you a proposed law that will fulfill this
requirement:
The proposed LEX SECUNDA OCTAVIA DE CENTURIATA:
This Lex is hereby enacted to set the number of centuries as required
by Paragraph II.E.2 of the Constitution of Nova Roma, as amended
by the Lex Octavia de Centuriata. In the event that the amendment does
not pass, this lex shall be ineffective.
[ note: the amendment is still awaiting ratification by the Senate,
which will vote on it this month ]
I. The number of centuries shall be determined by dividing the number
of Assidui citizens by eight, rounding down. This calculation shall take
place every time that a reallocation of centuries is performed by the
Censores. If this calculation results in a number greater than 193, then
there shall be only 193 centuries. If this calculation results in a
number less than 51, there shall be exactly 51 centuries.
II. The Censores may determine the number of centuries in each class
by edict, as previously established by the Lex Iunia Centuriata. If
the Censores choose not to do so, then the same proportions already
in effect from the previous allocation shall be adhered to as
closely as possible, in order to preserve the relative sizes of
the classes. For purposes of this calculation, the century
containing the Capite Censi shall be considered outside of
any class.
Now, I'd like to provide an example of the reallocation.
Currently there are 424 Assidui: 171 paid members and 253 new citizens
(exempt from payment until next year).
424 divided by eight is 53; there will be 53 centuries.
We now calculate the relative class sizes:
Class OLD NEW find rel. sz. apply relative size
I 55 15 55/192=.286 .286*52=14.87
II 47 13 47/192=.245 .245*52=12.72
III 39 10 39/192=.203 .203*52=10.56
IV 30 8 30/192=.156 .156*52=8.12
V 21 6 21/192=.109 .109*52=5.6
cap cen 1 1
totals 193 53
(Class III had to be rounded down instead of up in this example to make
the total come out to 53; it would have been 54 due to accumulated
rounding errors otherwise).
This calculation would be automatic, and would be done in this
manner only if the Censores choose not to publish an edict
establishing the century sizes.
In November, just prior to the annual elections, we'd do the
calculation again. We will have many more citizens then - and
all the new citizens are considered Assidui.
171 paid members
253 joined in 7 months (dec-june)
180 predicted to join before December (5/7 * 253).
604 total Assidui; will give us 75 centuries for December.
With this new plan, every century will be larger than it was before,
thus ensuring that it will have multiple votes (which our system needs
to work properly; remember the difficulty we had electing a Praetor
in January).
I ask you to approve this lex, so that we can finally have multiple
votes coming in from each and every century, and a smooth election
in the Comitia Centuriata.
Valete, Octavius.

>do caballo, cheval, cavalo, and cavallo appear in 4 of the 5 Romance

>hundreds and hundreds of examples like these.
TESTA: It is a kind of humoristic metaphor originally. <testa> means
originally 'ceramic flower-pot' and it is used by analogy to refer a 'skull'
from this metaphoric use it is extended to 'head'
CABALLUS is a horse for work, in oppisiton to <equus> a horse for war or
militrary purposes. It is evident that ruralization of everyday life in
later empire made some specific domestic terms such as <caballus> the
general term, subtituin words like <equus>
Do yo ask if there are more examples ... of course:
<ignis> 'fire' (the general term) is substituted by a domesctic term <focus>
'cooking-range, grill'.
<pugna> 'battle' (the general term) is substituted by <battualia> 'militar
manoeuvre'
Also there are two famous metonymy:
(a) <ficatus iecur> 'liver with figs' was one the most popular culinary
specialities of late empire and usually was currently named <ficatus> by
this reason Romanic Languages have terms like French <foie> 'liver', Italian
<fecato> 'liver'? Spanish <hígado> 'liver' all of these reflexes of the word
<ficatus> 'with figs' not of the original term <iecur> 'liver'.
(b) <caseus formaticus> 'moldeable cheese' denotes a special type of cheese
so popular that the usual word for cheese in most Romanic languages is
derived from the abbreviated form <formaticus> that gives French <fromage>,
Italian <formaggio> and Catana <formatge>. The Spanish word <queso> and the
english word <cheese> derive from late Latin <kesu>.
Metonymy: the use of a part word of a particular expression for designate
the general term is one of the major responsible of lexical change in all
languages.
A final exemple: when one pay to his/her creditors, the debtors become in
pace, from this fact we have the expresion <pacare creditores> 'to pacify
creditors' this is te origin of the word to pay, from French payer from late
Latin <paiare> or <pagare> both prom <pacare> 'to pacify'.
