[Nova-Roma] Declaration of candidacy |

Salve,
I, Quintus Cassius Calvus, would like to take this moment to
introduce myself and declare my candidacy for the office of
rogator.
By trade I work in logistics support for a mid-sized multinational
firm and my experience in the area of accounting and inventory
control leads me to feel that I am qualified to act in the office of
rogator with professional efficiency. I have been a citizen the
required six months and at the "ripe old age" of 34 well above the
age restrictions for office.
Aside from personal qualifications for the office, I am "throwing my
hat into the ring" because it is my duty as a Roman to participate in
our republican system of government. At the heart of that system is
the electorial and legislative process. The office of rogator
ensures that the republican process is fair, unbiased, and accurate.
The vacancy in the offices of the rogators is counter to our
republican process.
Pax,
Quintus Cassius Calvus

AVETE QVIRITES
Today I send you the first of the posts written by
our Aedilis Plebis Tiberius Apollonius Cicatrix about
several important Roman authors!
The following one concerns Decimus Iunius
Iuvenalis.
Before starting, I tell you that you can find these
texts on the web site of the Ludi Apollinares, in the
"scriptores" section:
http://www.geocities.com/mcserapio/aediliscicatrix.html
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
DECIMUS IUNIUS IUVENALIS
Decimus Iunius Iuvenalis was born in the first century
and died around 140 AD. He is considered the last and
greatest representant of a very typical Roman form of
literature: satire. We don’t know very much about his
life because of very unreliable biographies, and also
because he almost nowhere writes about himself. (as
for example Horatius did). He considers himself a
‘cliens’, and according to him, nobility should
respect these ‘clientes’, because they could not live
without them. Iuvenalis was born in Aquinum and later
came to Rome, but after a quarrel with the imperial
court, he was banished by emperor Domitianus. So he
must have been a rather important person in his era,
although he was poor and depending on protection (this
changed later, when he lived in more pleasant
circumstances). He is also much mentioned by his
friend Martialis, another poet, who had the same
opinion about him. Iuvenalis also gave rhetorical
lectures in public, and he only started writing
satires when he was in the last thirty years of his
life. He was worried about the decay in the Roman
empire, but he seems that much embittered, that we can
suspect personal rancour. The period of Domitianus
(81-96 AD) has shocked him very much, and his satires
are a response to this. Although he wrote them during
the calmer periods of Traianus and Hadrianus.
Iuvenalis’ work contains 16 satires, varying in length
between 60 and 661 verses, compiled in five books.
They are all characterized by great bitterness and
much seriousness, also by avoiding references to
current facts and only referring to persons and events
from a recent past, and, last but not least, by much
pessimism. With his special sarcastic statement he
reacts against the corruption within the empire,
vanity, the rich ones, hypocrisy, the Greeks, … and
women. In his third satire he describes very elaborate
the many dangers of the rough city life, written in an
excellent style with a content still relevant in our
times. His descriptions are mostly full of humour and
splendid linguistic qualities. But sometimes he may
seem to exaggerate in his rather rude language,
especially in his first satires. Without doubt
Iuvenalis can be considered the greatest Roman
satirist.
Some well known Roman sayings, coming from Iuvenalis:
Mens sana in corpore sano
Aliena vivere quadra
EXTRACT FROM SATIRE III (212-231)
Si magna Asturici cecidit domus, horrida mater,
pullati proceres, differt vadimonia praetor.
tunc gemimus casus urbis, tunc odimus ignem.
hic Asianorum vetera ornamenta deorum,
hic libros dabit et forulos mediamque Minervam,
hic modium argenti. meliora ac plura reponit
Persicus, orborum lautissimus et merito iam
suspectus tamquam ipse suas incenderit aedes.
Si potes avelli circensibus, optima Sorae
aut Fabrateriae domus aut Frusinone paratur
quanti nunc tenebras unum conducis in annum.
hortulus hic puteusque brevis nec reste movendus
in tenuis plantas facili diffunditur haustu.
vive bidentis amans et culti vilicus horti,
unde epulum possis centum dare Pythagoreis.
est aliquid, quocumque loco, quocumque recessu
unius sese dominum fecisse lacertae.
But if the grand house of Asturicus be destroyed, the
matrons go dishevelled, your great men put on
mourning, the praetor adjourns his court: then indeed
do we deplore the calamities of the city, and bewail
its fires! Before the house has ceased to burn, up
comes one with a gift of marble or of building
materials, another offers nude and glistening statues,
a third some notable work of Euphranor or Polyclitus,
or bronzes that had been the glory of old Asian
shrines. Others will offer books and bookcases, or a
bust of Minerva, or a hundredweight of silver-plate.
Thus does Persicus, that most sumptuous of childless
men, replace what he has lost with more and better
things, and with good reason incurs the suspicion of
having set his own house on fire.
If you can tear yourself away from the games of the
Circus, you can buy an excellent house at Sora, at
Fabrateria or Frusino, for what you now pay in Rome to
rent a dark garret for one year. And you will there
have a little garden, with a shallow well from which
you can easily draw water, without need of a rope, to
bedew your weakly plants. There make your abode, a
friend of the mattock, tending a trim garden fit to
feast a hundred Pythagoreans. It is something, in
whatever spot, however remote, to have become the
possessor of a single lizard!

Salve,
Thank you, so much. I am so very pleased to begin the
paterfamiliias Varius. It is truly a great honor and I hope that the
gens shall be one of distinction. As soon as I recieve said "login
code" I shall most certainly update the profile. As yet, my wife and
I do not have a suitable photo to include (I don't think Elizabethan
court garb would probably do... need a new photo). Working on that.
As soon as possible, we shall post one.
As an aside, having the worst time with yahoo for getting the list.
Apparently, my wife and I shall have to have different yahoo accounts
to each get the list mail separately. We've had the worst time trying
to figure out why it keeps sending the list to one or the other of
us, since we've got both our email addresses listed. My new
understanding of it is, the "primary" gets mail and even though other
email addresses are able to be listed, they don't get the posts and
they can't send mail back to the list... very awkward. She said she
didn't mind setting up her own yahoo account so we can both get the
list and post from our respective emails. It's just an electronic
pain in the... something. Just seemed so odd that a server would
allow alternate email addresses and then not allow each of them to
recieve mail. Very strange.
Valate,
M. Varius

I offer my time to occupy this post and to help in this simple but
necessary task of government.

Salvete Quirites,
Loi proposée LEX OCTAVIA DE PRIVATUS REBUS
postulants. Cela soulagera les Paterfamilias de gérer

[Nova-Roma] LEX SECUNDA OCTAVIA DE CENTURIATA, french translation |

Salvete Quirites,
Classe Ancienne Nouvelle Taille relative
I 55 55/192=0.286 0.286*52=14.87
II 47 47/192=0245 0.245*52=12.72
III 39 39/192=0.203 0.203*52=10.56
IV 30 30/192=0.156 0.156*52=8.12
V 21 21/192=0.109 0.109*52=5.6
Capite Censi 1 1 1
Total 193 53
Valete, Octavius.

Salve! Try deleting your cookie files. Yahoo's simply dreadful about
setting them (among other bad habits) and clearing your cookies may
help both of you. You'll have to go through the bother of logging out
and in again, but... famous last words... it SHOULD work!

What a great kickoff to what promises to be a great festival of Apollo!
My thanks to Manius Constantius Serapio and my soror Pompeia Cornelia
Strabo, our halftime entertainment, the Subura Boys and foremost, our
Plebian Aedile, Tiberius Apollonius Cicatrix.
I just want to say on behalf of Invictus, he's glad to have won what turned
out to be a desperate, if entertaining hunt. He's getting a nasty leg wound
treated by the finest doctor from Alexandria that money can buy.
Getting Invictus was all done for our fans in the Flavian Amphitheater and
our home viewers, who make it all possible. It took a lot of time, effort
and sesterces to get Invictus. Unfortunately this Cornelian sponsor is not
as rich as the family name, and couldn't put him into the finest training
camp. Uh, maybe we can get him in better fighting trim next time around.
Frankly this is my first ludi beyond the Circenses, so I've got a lot to
learn here. Did I mention that we've got more Ludi Circenses coming in the
future?
In conclusion, Invictus will be recovering, and will be glad to meet the
women of the aristocratic and equestrian families. Gaius Cornelius
Ahenobarbus would like a small fee for the priviledge of the introduction.
