Salvete Omnes,

For several years, I have been maining a near-complete set of main
list archives going back to its beginning in 1998. When we were
forced to transfer the list a few months ago, I placed these on
the www.novaroma.org server.

Now, these list archives have been updated with index files. Each
month has an index of titles and authors, with pointers to the
file for each day. You can now find subjects of interest much
more quickly.

The list archives are available to all at:

Valete, Octavius.

AVETE CIVES NOVAE ROMAE

Did you see??? What an incredible fighting yesterday!!! Afer and
Crispinus (Crispie!) really did an excellent job! My congratulations!
It was a great idea that of using a pilum to pole-vault! It never
came to my mind! I shall try this summer! :)

Well, you see, these combats have "appointed" two new winners: their
fighters will surely shot up the ladder!
So, my congratulations to our friends, Sextus Apollonius Scipio and
Marcus Apuls Caesar! What will they do with their awards? Will they
buy a couple of new white horses? Will they offer us a roman dinner?
(grin!!!)

Now, after the second day of combats... comes the third one! :)
Today the Musarum Television Network and our excellent Pompeia
Cornelia Strabo will be again on the terraces of the Colosseum to
give us the commentary of two new encounters!
Our Senatrix Patricia Cassia will surely watch Aquila fighting in the
arena: as well as Tiberius Annaeus Otho will control that his Tingis
does a good job.
May the Gods be with you!!!

ENJOY THE VENATIONES IN HONOUR OF APOLLO!!!

From: "Susan Brett" <trog99@hotmail.com>

AMICII, CIVITES, PEREGRINI NOVA ROMA!!!!!!!!

ONCE AGAIN LIVE FROM THE AMPHITEATRUM FLAVIUM ROMA!!!!!

LIVE ACTION OF THE LUDI VENATORII OF THE LUDI APOLLINARES

AVE APOLLO!!!!

My name, Pompeia Cornelia, giving you commentary and play-by-play........

As I speak, or even attempt to with all the noise in this historic
amphiteater, the organizers are putting the finishing touches on things in
preparation for today's spectacles!

This venue is packed with thousands who have travelled to enjoy these
games.....the cheering, the chanting.....the spirit of this whole affair is
something to which words do absolutely no justice.

(I'd better be careful...with that last statement I just might talk myself
out of a job, here...hee hee)

And now, Honoured Pontifex Antonius Gryllus Graecus shall make appropriate
sacrifice in honour of Apollo. The national anthem of Nova Roma will then
be sung by the unjustifiably popular rap& hiphop group, "The Cataline
Conspiracy"

WE ARE BACK....AMONGST WAVES, CHEERS, RIGHT NOW THE CROWD CHANTS 'POLLO,
'POLLO, 'POLLO.......while enjoying 'POLLO PUFFS'...delicious sugar-filled
cotton candy treats on huge sticks.

Today 'Pollo Puffs are gratis, I am told, so Rome just might be faced with a
sudden epidemic of hyperactive youngsters tonight....Ahh, well......this
comes but once a year, right Quirites??

THE ACTION BEGINS......AHH!!!

Our first combat of the day: The Honourable Priestess of Minerva, Senatrix
Patricia Cassia makes her way into the arena, via litter, which is adorned
by the personal vexella and standard of this remarkable lady.

What lovely red hair she has and a snow-white complexion that is the envy of
many a domina here in Rome!!!

On her shoulder she is sporting an owl, who appears to be asleep at present,
in keeping with it's nocturnal nature.

Behind Cassia's litter, is her Venatrix (Pompeia squints....yeah, she 'is' a
female)......wow...talk about your cross between a dragon and the
Medusa......THIS WOMAN IS ALLLLLLLLL MUSCLE.......6'2" AND 296 LB. AND
TATTOOS????? THE WOMAN IS A WALKING MURAL. Ahh, "her" name, I am told is
Aquila, and for some reason it has been made known to me that she is
somewhat of a 'windbag', but for the life of me, I don't know what that has
to do with anything (Po shrugs).

Aquila has a strength of 30 and a resistance of 40.

Cassia paid 7,000 sestertii for the rights to this 'lady' and an additional
2,500 for Ludi fees to the Ludus Matutinus in Hispania.

Cassia has 500 sestertii left over.

THE BEAST HAS ARRIVED.......AHHH....AN ELEPHANT FROM CYRENAICA.

Speaking of 'windbags' someone can shut that elephant up at anytime??...the
walls of this theatre are going to cave from its earpiercing
screeeeching...Hey, I got an idea, which is worth a try.

(Po stands up with her microphone and with a loud booming voice hollers:
SHUT UP WILL YA PULLLLLEEEEEEEZZZEEEE...) EICTUM PRAETORIUM!!!

HEY IT WORKED!!!! WHY DOESN'T IT WORK WITH CHILDREN????

Our beast has a strength of 10 and a resistance of 58.

THE COMBAT BEGINS....

What's this?? Medusa, sorry Aquila, appears to be having a
snack.....aggghhhhhh......raw Garlic, amicii....she is shoving bulbs of raw
garlic in her mouth and chewing them.........!!!!!!

Ya gotta love the garlic, but as the stones of Delphi suggest...."nothing to
excess"......uggh

And, in my humble opinion, eating in a fashion that mother would 'not' like
you to eat in public....no Miss Manners in this gal!

MORE GARLIC.......A GARLIC VENDOR IS AT ARENA SIDE THROWING HER MORE BULBS
OF GARLIC

THE CROWD IS WOOING, BOOING CHEERING, YELLING, "HEY THAT'S GROSS"...PLUS A
FEW VERBAGES I AM NOT ALLOWED TO SAY ON NETWORK TV...:)

Aquila is encircling the elephant (still silent due to Praetoral
Edictum...hee hee) while munching.........

AQUILA IS NOW HURLING BULBS OF GARLIC AT THE ELEPHANT...JUST BEANING THIS
BEAST.........OHHHHHH THIS ELEPHANT IS NOW *UGLY* AND PURSUES OUR FIGHTER.

Cassia, calm and collected, views the spectacle from a safe distance....

WHAT'S THIS?????

Aquila grabs the elephant by the trunk, then puts the trunk in her
mouth.......ohh yuck.....Aquila sucks in a deep breath, and blows into the
elephants trunk..........100% fumes....raw garlic fumes!!!!

The elephant is staggering, stunned.....

Aquila has a resistance of 40.......the elephant has.......uhh

Quirites, the elephant.....has expired......

WELL HOW DO YA LIKE THAT.......

AQUILA VICTRIX!!!!!!

AND...a creative, painless, quick end to our bestial friend....well, never
underestimate the power of an herb, I guess, or the power of a 'windbag'!!!!

Well, it is time for another network time out.......

THIS IS THE MUSARUM TELEVISION NETWORK

********************

WE HAVE RETURNED TO MORE ACTION!!!!

'OTHO OTHO OTHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" THE CROWD WOOES..........

TIBERIUS ANNAEUS OTHO HAS ARRIVED, WITH HIS VENATOR!!!!!

Otho gives a warm smile and waves to his greeting public!!

His Venator beside him, Tingis from Maruetania, student of the Ludus
Pentasium!! Tingus with a strenth of 39 and a resistence of 41.

Otho is another gambler, amicii! Paying 9,000 sestertii for Tingis, plus
another grant in ludi fees, Other is left with sweet zippo to his
name.........none, notta, diddlius dewheartus!!! Hopefully not for
long.....(Swiss bank accounts are not very effective when they have no
balance......hee hee!!!)

OUT COMES HIS BEASTIAL COMPETITOR......A BRUIN FROM GALlIA NARBONENSIS!

THIS BEAST IS 500 LB I WAGER.......

THE ACTION BEGINS AFTER OTHO EXITED THE COMBAT AREA......

After a few brief seconds the bear lunges toward our fighter with great
force.......Tingis is knocked to the ground, but immediately gets up and
delivers a well-aimed double fisted punch to our bruin.....

TINGIS RESISTANCE STILL 39, THE BEAR'S 15.
WHY WAS THE PUNCH SO EFFECTIVE????.....AHH, HIS WEAPON AMICII IS A SET OF
WEIGHTED GLOVES.....A HANDICAP, OF SORTS.

The bear is up on his hind legs.......Tingis grasps the bear around the
neck, and continued to apply slow even pressure, while dancing out of the
bear's direct vision, moving his hands as necessary, without relenting on
the airway of our beast. The beast falls to the ground from weakness, and
Tingis 'falls' with him. TINGIS IS NOT ON TOP OF THE BEAR, confident that
the bear is too weak to resist.

TINGIS RESISTANCE 38, THE BEAR'S...1.

Tingis continues his management of our beast..........

TINGIS RESISTENCE 38....OUR BEAST IS SOMEWHERE AROUND THE RIVER STYX, BEAR
HEAVEN.....WHICHEVER WAY YOU VIEW THINGS, THE BRUIN IS BREATHLESS AND
PULSELESS.

TINGIS VICTOR!!!!

And his patron, Otho will have a few sestertii to put into that Swiss bank
account, after all!!

Tingis looks forward, I am sure to an even more promising career in future
combative encounters.

************

This completes the action for today, amicii! Tomorrow, more encounters in
this, the Ludi Venatorii of the Ludi Apollinares 2755 AUC

For now, I bid you Bene valete et Buona Fortuna!!!!

Caecilia,

It was mostly as expected, except:

Interactions with Alex Trebek are pretty much strictly what you see
on the show - the quickie interviews and the chit-chat over the
closing credits, and that's IT. That's probably mostly due to the
very fast pace of the day - they shoot 5 shows a day and they move
things along at a VERY brisk clip. They do have Alex take a picture
with you, which they send in a nice frame as a keepsake, and that's
pretty nice of them. The contestant coordinators do a great job of
keeping the atmosphere friendly and upbeat. The show's pace is
probably about 2 and a half times faster when you're on stage as it
seems at home - it's over and done with in a seeming blink of an eye.
All in all, it was an interesting and unique experience. Wish I could
have won that Jaguar, though!

Vale!

Salvete!

I hope everyone is enjoying these posts on ROman
authors! They are here for your pleasure!

Today: Publius Ovidius Naso

----------
PUBLIUS OVIDIUS NASO

Publius Ovidius Naso was born in 43 BC in Sulmo, at
approximately 150km from Rome. His father wanted him
to become a jurist and had him educated in this
direction, but Ovidius wanted to become a poet ever
since he was young. Ovidius grew up in a period of
flourishing literature in the peace and stability of
the first years of the reign of Octavianus (Caesar
Augustus). He became friends with poets like
Vergilius, Horatius and Propertius and possibly moved
in the best circles, near the caesar.

He wrote many poetical works, among which the
controversial “Ars Amatoria” (The Art Of Love), a
collection of erotic poems forming a handbook about
how to win your beloved one and bind her on you. In
his biggest work, the “Metamorphoses”, a mythological
history of the world from its creation on to the reign
of Augustus, he incorporated around 250 myths. All
stories are linked up very nice to form a continuous
and coherent unity. Though he drew very much on Greek
drama and poetry, Ovidius was more a poet than a
scientist; he added materials or created whole new
stories. Before he completed his definitive version of
the “Metamorphoses”, he was banned from Rome, partly
because of his ‘scandalous’ “Ars Amatoria”.
Dissatisfied with his modifications on the
“Metamorphoses” he decided to burn the manuscript. The
text only survived because some of his friends still
owned copies. Even after he was banned, he continued
to write poems and letters, but no longer with the
same enthusiasm as before. He died in 17 AD, sad and
lonely.

The charms of his “Metamorphoses” not only made this
work famous in his era, but also made sure it would
live on during Christianity. In the Dark Ages it was
possibly the most read non-christian work and until
our era almost every European poet owed something to
Ovidius. Thanks to him many classical stories are kept
in their vivid and imaginative form, and thus they
clearly justify the last lines of his Metamorphoses”:

METAMORPHOSES XV, 871-879:

Iamque opus exegi, quod nec Iovis ira nec ignis
nec poterit ferrum nec edax abolere vetustas.
Cum volet, illa dies, quae nil nisi corporis huius
ius habet, incerti spatium mihi finiat aevi:
parte tamen meliore mei super alta perennis
astra ferar, nomenque erit indelebile nostrum,
quaque patet domitis Romana potentia terris,
ore legar populi, perque omnia saecula fama,
siquid habent veri vatum praesagia, vivam.

And now, I have completed a great work,
which not Jove's anger, and not fire nor steel,
nor fast-consuming time can sweep away.
Whenever it will, let the day come, which has
dominion only over this mortal frame,
and end for me the uncertain course of life.
Yet in my better part I shall be borne
immortal, far above the stars on high,
and mine shall be a name indelible.
Wherever Roman power extends her sway
over the conquered lands, I shall be read
by lips of men. If Poets' prophecies
have any truth, through all the coming years
of future ages, I shall live in fame.

----------

Tomorrow the next one!

Valete bene
