I agree. Lucky for me, 3 years my Paterfamilias
helped me to pick out my name. And the best thing
is that most people think that it is my real one!
I wanted a name to reflect the Roman Gods and I
ended up with Diana Aventina. I am extremely
active in the european pagan scene, so the
Neo-Pagans think that my name is for Diana,
Goddess of the Witches. They don't know that
Diana Aventina is a Roman Goddess.
Greetings,
Diana

Salve, Quintus Lanius Paulinus,

Welcome. I too am new and learning my way. I have the great fortune to be
aquainted with one of the Patrician members (In fact, I will be seeing him
and his wife for dinner tomorrow evening and can hardly wait!) who has been
very helpful along the way. I hope you enjoy the group as much as my wife and
I are.

Salve,

I certainly agree. It took my wife and I a great deal of thoughful
consideration and research, before we decided on Varia. It was our good
fortune to not only be granted acceptance by the Censors, but to be able to
establish it as our own paterfamilia. We were quite honored.

As one who has many different interests and hobbies, I often stumble across

SALVETE OPTIMI QVIRITES

We are going towards the end of our Venationes!
Next saturday you will know how much you won!!!

Anyway, yesterday other two fighters won their
combats... sorry citizens... I just would like to see
some of my kind animals prevailing! I am getting
upset! :(

Yes, yes, ok.... I should be impartial, but how may
I??? I am a Roman! I love the Ludi, the fighting, the
contests! And I want to see different "fates"! ;)

Well, anyway I must congratulate with our two new
illustrious winners: Senator Caeso Fabius Quintilianus
and Propraetor Franciscus Apulus Caesar.
Apulus Caesar told me that his foe, the buffalo,
looked like a not-so-hard enemy, and that he would
have prefered Quintilianus's hippopotamus... On the
contrary my dear hippo has been defeated by the
beautiful Dania...
You must know that before Dania's combat, Franciscus
Apulus' venator, Aurum, was courting her. As Dania
concluded her fighting and came in the Colosseum's
underground passages again carrying an exanimate
hippopotamus on her back, Aurum started wondering to a
married life with such a fashion plate and gradually
changed his mind.... alas. No marriage this time... :)

In any case, today we will have the opportunity of
watching two new combats!!!
Serpeniius, that will combat in honour of Apollo thank
to Tiberius Ullerius Faber, and Aquinca, a powerful
fighter that will defend the name of Lucius Arminius
Faustus! And the Musarum Television Network with our
Pompeia Cornelia Strabo will tell us all about it!!!

HAVE A GOOD TIME WITH THE LUDI APOLLINARES, CITIZENS
OF NOVA ROMA!!! MAY APOLLO BE WITH US!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Subject: [Nova-Roma] How choose a NR name...
From: =?iso-8859-1?q?Lucius=20Arminius=20Faustus?= <lafaustus@yahoo.com.br>
Date: Thu, 11 Jul 2002 10:02:54 -0300 (ART)

Salve,
I ´d like to contribute in the questions of how choose a NR name, a question that took me long time before I arrive in NR. With these small rules I´m sure that anyone can have a happy citizenship:

To choose a gens:
I. Number of people of your country in the gens. - If you will find friends in NR, first search the closests!
II. Number of people in the gens. - Well... big families help more than small ones!
III. Political power of the paterfamilias. - I sound bad, but is not. The paterfamilias is your first friend and patron. The first thing that the novoromani see in a new man is the gens, and the reputation of the gentilis leader. So you will be backed by the power of the paterfamilias in the inicial boring six months of solitude. Try to choose veterans, and a active one. I adress to see the century points of him.

The first name - Well, now you do not have much choice: Marcus, Lucius, Caius are always the default since Roman times. Must be a useful name, nothing odd or romanized.
The cognomen - Really there is the fun! I have counted 200 cognomen in a research on Titus Livius, 190 gentes, but only 20 praenomen (some of them are cheated ones). I will try to put it available next week. Anything can be the cognomen, and you can have more than one. Some clients of me have honoured me putting Fautus Something as a cognomen... how cute! But be careful, large cognomens could be very odd. Well, In my case, I have chose Faustus because it means ´of the good omen´, ´favorable to the gods´ or even ´lucky´. Most times, you shall be know by the cognomen as the historical Scipius (even as Scipius Africanus) <Publius Cornelius Scipio>, Caesar <Caius Julius Caesar>, Cicero <Marcus Tulius Cicero>, Tacitus <Caius Cornelius Tacitus>, Publicola <Marcus Valerius Publicola>, Sula <Lucius Cornelius Sula>, Marcelus <Marcus Claudius Marcelus> - but it is not a rule. But be very careful in the cognomen.

For now, only a contributiun,
Valete bene, pax deorum...

Wonderful dieertation of Name choosing. I must add one thing...A powerful paterfamilias is a wonderful thing, unless of course, you cannot get in contact with him to request admission into the gens. This happened to me and I waited 2 months before forming my own. Forming a new gens or re-establishing one is another option for name choosing. While you will still be living in solitude for a time, at least you will be able to participate and work your own way through the processes and tribulations.

Salve Lucius Aulus Octavianus,

>how should I proceed to be a good citizen

I would say that living by the Roman virtues is
the way... The link to the Roman virtues is
http://www.novaroma.org/via_romana/virtues.html

To me, the 3 most important are
Veritas: "Truthfulness" Honesty in dealing with
others.
Comitas: "Humor" Ease of manner, courtesy,
openness, and friendliness.
Clementia: "Mercy" Mildness and gentleness.

In this life, Dishonesty is the biggest problem.
We see it everywhere in different forms. There
are too many people willing to be dishonest in
order to get what they want. These are the types
who do/say things to other people in order to
feel superior themselves. Honesty on the other
hand, means that you are honest with yourself as
well as others. You accept yourself for what you
are even if you know damn well that someone else
may be smarter, have more money or be handsomer.
This acceptance of yourself, what you have & what
you are capable of achieving gives you freedom to
live happily. If you have Veritas in your life,
then then Comitas & Clementia will fall into
place on their own.
Just my opinion :-)
Diana

I would assume by cognoma you meant cognomina. I hope I'm right, as I
hate making an ass of myself, but I can take being wrong. But,
assuming again I'm right, there are three pages I would refer you to.
The first: http://www.gaminggeeks.org/Resources/KateMonk/A

(printed) of truly Roman nomina. The second:

100% Cognomina. Go ahead and add a few to your name (I read there was

ONCE AGAIN, LIVE ACTION AT THE LUDI VENATORII, AMPHITEATRUM

IN HONOUR OF THE FAR-SEEING ONE, FAIR APOLLO!!!!

Salvete Omnes, Pompeia here, to give live action play-by-play at this
portion of the glorious Ludi Apollinares, produced by the hardworking staff
of the Honoured Plebian Aedile, Tiberius Apollonius Cicatrix.

They have outdone themselves....my commendations and appreciation for their
efforts.

AHHHHHH

We have a guest for you......!!!

Yes, a guest!!!

I have the Illustrious Gaius Embezzelus Ambitius here to chat with me
briefly!!

Citizen Embezzelus, as we all know, you are almost soley responsible for
emassing the vast sums of money to repair and restore this wonderful
Amphitheatre, to render it suitable to hold an event of such grandeur as
this.

Now, one has to wonder 'how' you could possibly have liquidated such an
inestimable sum so quickly!!!!

Yunno, I was having lunch recently with my Praetoral Colleague T. Labienus
Fortunatus at this ranch in Americaaustooccidentalis, and for the life of
both of us, upon discussion of this very situation you indeed have us
puzzled.

Here is your chance, sir, to clue us in....tell the whole world through
network television: "How did you get 'all' that money???"

"IIIIIyaaa, er...well, I a daaa yaaa.....yunno, hee hee, since you put it
that way"

"What way, Sir......simply....wheredya get it? "

"Well, I dah...well, yunno, little nooks and crannies, here and there....I
have my sources........it's very academic...dah, ya"

"Wow!! Nooks and Crannies full of money"....hmm, Wish I could find a few.
Yunno, Fortunatus and I have figured out one bottom line...would you like to
know what that bottom line is Embezellus?"

"Ahh, well, yes......I suppose"

"YOU......are just TOO DARNED MODEST.......that's it!!!"

"Well, Cornelia, Iiii, think that's likely the 'least of my worries', no?"
Embezzelus says rather nervously.

"Yes, my good sir, it certainly is....ahh...atleast for now"

"Well, I'll take my leave, Praetor".

"Bene vale, Sir....and I have a feeling we will be meeting again very
soon.....perhaps to discuss this very matter, who knows???"

(Pompeia waves him goodbye and gives him her unassuming eye blush and
apple-pie smile)

THE OPENING CEREMONIES BEGIN

The Honoured Antonia Cornelia Octaviana is the celebrant of the religious
ritual.

The National Anthem sung by the Queen of Soul....Aretha Franciscus!!

THE ACTION BEGINS!!!!

Entering the Arena to greet his public:

TIBERIUS ULLERIUS FABER!!! SON OF THE ROMAN FAST FOOD KING OF THE
WORLD....HIS FATHER IS THE OWNER OF THE MULTI-FRANCHISED "SENATOR
VENATORS"!!!!

Ahh, that boy will never go hungry, and I have a feeling he'll never be
broke either, hee hee.

Ullerius' Venator is Serpeniius from Illyricum, of the Ludus
Matutinus..........uhhh, yuck.....does he 'have' to come dressed in
snakes.......yuckkkk........

Ullerius has paid 5,000 sestertii for this snake-bedeckled fighter, and an
addition 2,500 in ludus fees. Ahh, but Ullerius has inherited his Pater's
good business sense...have 2,500 left over!!

SERPENIIUS HAS A STRENGTH OF33 AND A RESISTENCE OF 27

His foe????? Enter........the first lion of the Ludi Venatorii.

WITH A STRENGTH OF 35 AND A RESISTENCE OF 34

Is Serpeniius out of his mind???? Do you know 'what happens' to folks who
fight lions.......ahh, usually? He is sporting a net and a gladius.

THE LION IS ATTACKING.....ULLERIUS RUNS FOR COVER.........!!!

The lion gives a superficial bite to the gluteus of our fighter...no blood
drawn

Serpeniius resistence 23, the lion 29

Serpeniius manages to break away, and using the net is trying to lure the
lion into captivity. Well, the lion grabs the net alright, and is briefly
arrested, but manages enough freedom to make spaghetti out of it.
Serpeniius lets go of the net, and the lion runs toward our fighter, and
takes swipes at him with his formidable paws...

Serpeniius resistence 23, the beast, 18

Serpeniius, bleeding, draws his gladius and succeeds in delivering a blow to
the lions right shoulder.......this beast is mad!!!! The lion takes a small
chunk out of our fighters left shoulder. Our fighter is weakening a bit...
the lion has weakened also, but in my estimation still has the edge.

Serpeniius resistence 18, and the lion a resistence of 16

One more blow from the fighter to the lion, this time, in the upper
back...unless he can place a blow 'where it will count', the lion is going
to make mincemeat of our beloved Serpeniis.

Too back Serpeniius was not allowed to use the snakes in battle!

Serpenius resistence 13, and the beast 4.

OH NO!........SERPENIUS HAS MOVED VERY SLOWLY, LIKE A MOUSE FROM A HOUSECAT,
AND IS BEING VICIOUSLY CHALLENGED BY OUR LION.

HE POUNCES ONTOP OF OUR COMPROMISED FIGHTER, AND PROCEEDS TO MAUL HIM
MERCILESSLY.

The crowd boos........

Formidable strength, this feline, despite being the victim of a gladius.

Serpeniius resistence 8, the beast 12.

The chances of our fighter weaken, with each successive assault by the lion,
who is directly on top of Serpeniius, allowing no escape.

Our officials are ready to end the spectacle, but as with most fighters in
ludi, they would rather die than quite. Apparently Serpeniius is no
exception.

Ullerius looks on, pensively.

Serpeniius resistence 3, the beast, 9

It's all over folks.......our fighter is deceased, and the lion is left with
a resistence of five.

My sympathies to the admirers of Serpeniius and to his sponsor Tiberius
Ullerius.

Strange folk, these venatores and gladiators...so committed to their game
that they simply will not walk away. They are indeed a mystery, which many
of us will never fathom...alas.......

During this sad moment, we will take a network time out***********

***********THIS IS THE MUSARUM TELEVISION NETWORK****************

WE ARE BACK AMICII FOR YET MORE ACTION!!!

Entering the arena to greet his public is none other than

LUCIUS ARMINIUS FAUSTUS...sipping...what's this??? I am told a cup of
BRAZILIAN FAUSTAN FALERNIAN!!!!.......from his private vineyards.

I am told a sample is being provided to each of us!!!

Arminius has purchased a very interesting and experienced Venatrix:
Aquinca of Pannonia, from the Ludus Taruiscum.....sipping Pannonian
Chardonnay.

(We are not getting a free sample of this, though....hmmph!)

The inegmatic fighter cost Arminius a cool 7,000 sestertii and an additional
1500 in ludus fees. Our wine sipping sponsor has 1,500 left over!!

Aquinca has a strength of 38 and a resistence of 32

She is being challenged by a Buffalo from Italia..with a strength of 22 and
a resistence of 26.

Our fighter is going to encounter our buffalo on stilts, while wielding a
slingshot.....this gal, although no ballerina, has great balance apparently,
and a dead eye accuracy with the sling!

She is allowed two stones....if she fails to strike her beastly opponent
with these, the stilts and sling are to be abandoned and Aquinca is left to
fight the beast with her person only!!!

Let's see.........

Aquinca ventures further into the arena a balanced on the tall stilts...she
proceeds to walk slowly toward the beast, who is pursuing toward him with a
trot to gallop speed.

THE FIRST STONE FROM THE SLING!!!!

The side of the head of the buffalo has been struck, but Aquinca has fallen
off the stilts, as the buffalo rammed her a bit....

Aquinca Resistence 31, the buff, 12

The buffalo, wincing a bit, retreats briefly, but allows time enough for our
fighter to don her stilts and prepare for a second slinging stone...

Aquinca woos the buffalo with a simulated roar, and the buffalo heads toward
our fighter's direction for more....oh, OH.........

The buff is about halfway to Aquinca.........splat......!!!

A stone is delivered between the eyes of our beast.

AQUINCA VICTRIX!!!!!

Aquinca finishes with a resistence of thirty, leaving our buffalo roaming
somewhere beyond the plane of our existence.

Aquinca gives a wave to the crowd and blows a kiss to Arminius Faustus...

WELL, THAT BE IT AMICII FOR TODAY'S SEGMENT OF THE LUDI VENATORII!!! WE LOOK
FORWARD TO WHAT IS IN STORE FOR TOMORROW.

UNTIL THEN...BENE VALETE ET BUONA FORTUNA!!!

Salve Aeternia,

Nice name by the way!

I don't want to bash Wiccans, but what most of
them don't realize is that modern wicca was
pretty much "created" by Gerald Gardner. And most
of what he created, he really copied word for
word from Charles Leland who did a lot of
research on Italian Witchcraft. That is how our
Diana became Diana the mother of Aradia in modern
Wicca & "the Queen of the Witches". But it all
links back to the original worship of Roman
Diana, who was still worshipped in secret in
small villages after the Christians took over. In
my little opinion, I think that the Christians
negatively gave Diana the title of Queen of the
Witches because anyone who didn't worship Christ
was a heretic and a witch and that was that. The
modern Wiccans kept the negative title that she
was given as if it were a compliment, just like
many new wiccans dye their hair black and dress
in witchy clothes like the negative medieval
stereotype of a witch.

Greetings,

Salvete!

Today I would like to present you the great comedy
writer Titus Maccius Plautus:

-----

TITUS MACCIUS PLAUTUS

1. Life of Plautus (254 BC - 184 BC)

Titus Maccius Plautus is the eldest Latin writer of
whom several complete works have survived. According
to tradition he was born around 250BC, far away from
Rome, in Sarsina, a small town in Umbria. He came
descended probably from a very modest family and lived
quite long, about 66 years or more. Almost nothing is
known about his life, but it is sure that he had great
knowledge in Greek language and literature. He was
probably, like his great successors Shakespeare and
Molière, head of a group of actors ("dominus gregis")
and wrote pieces for this company. His name Titus
Maccius Plautus is rather unusual. Plautus means
'flatfoot' in Umbria, but in one of his pieces there
is a reference to the meaning 'longhaired dog':
"Plautus with the barking name" ('Casina'). Maccus is
the name for the buffoon in ancient Italian comedies
('Fabulae Atellanae'); maybe Plautus started his
career as an actor in these comedies, where he played
this buffoon (Maccius has to be derived from Maccus,
even more, he calls himself Maccus in 'Asinaria' and
not Maccius). Of course we know nothing about how
Plautus looked like, but some believe that he has
given us a self-portrait in his description of the
slave Pseudolus: "red hair, big-bellied, strong
calves, brown skin, with a big head and fierce eyes",
a description that suits perfectly his 'strong' and
'fierce' language. He lived a big part of his life
during the Second Punic War (218BC-202BC), which raged
across Italy for years in many fierce fights and
terrifying battles. Not much of all this can be found
in Plautus' plays, even in 'Poenulus' (The
Carthaginian) where it could have been very easy to
demonstrate the hatred against Carthage. In fact there
are almost no references to Roman history in any of
Plautus' plays; all of them are set far from Rome, in
Greek cities. Even more, most of the plays are dated
after 200BC, when Plautus had already reached the age
of 50. Since this seems a little late to start
writing, surely for a man with his literary talent,
some people are convinced of the fact that he was born
10 or 20 years earlier than the traditional date. His
plays were indeed very popular at the time and were
played long after his dead. In later times 130 plays
were referred to as written by Plautus, but an
important scholar, Marcus Terentius Varro, said that
only 21 of them were actually written by Plautus. 20
Of those have survived (in alphabetical order):
Amphitryo, Asinaria, Aulularia, Bacchides, Captivi,
Casina, Cistellaria, Curculio, Epidicus, Menaechmi,
Mercator, Miles Gloriosus, Mostellaria, Persa,
Poenulus, Pseudolus, Rudens, Stichus, Trinummus and
Truculentus. Plautus takes a very special place in
European theatre. His comedies look very old to us; in
fact they are older than Christianity. Together with
his younger colleague Terentius Plautus can be counted
to the last period in classical history where plays
were written who were played many centuries on.

2. Summarising some of his works

ASINARIA: A lover wants to buy the exclusive rights
for one year on a whore. Her mother (and procuress)
asks 2000 drachms. The two slaves of the lover manage
to diddle the money from a merchant, who brings it as
a pay for some donkeys he has bought from the lover's
parents. So the money should have gone to the mother,
a rich woman who deals firmly with the family income.
The father of the lover agrees with the steal of
money, but he demands from his son the rights of the
first night. The lover sees he cannot refuse this, and
agrees. But a rival, who also wanted to buy the
exclusive rights on the girl, is furious because of
his missed opportunity. One of this man's parasites
tells the lover's mother about her husband's
disloyalty. Full of anger she pulls her husband away
from the girl. What follows is not very clear, but the
result is probably that the lover and his girl can
live happily together for a year.

AULULARIA: The play about the pot with money ('aula'=
pot), famous from its successors by PC Hooft and
Molière. The last act has almost completely
disappeared. The poor Euclio has found in his house a
pot full of money. He lives in constant fear because
he thinks his secret will become known and his money
will be stolen. And indeed, the pot is stolen.
Meanwhile and older gentleman has asked to marry
Euclio's daughter. But his daughter is already
pregnant from a young man who has raped her while
being drunk. This young man confesses, the pot full of
money is also recovered and is used as dowry for the
marriage. The plot is petty, but there are many funny
scenes, like the long spun out misunderstanding about
the daughter's loss of virginity and Euclio's loss of
his money.

CASINA: Casina is the name of the girl this play is
about, but she does not appear in the play itself.
There are a lot of gaps in the fifth act, and the
prologue is written on a later date. A rude farce,
with many caricatural features and a complicated plot.
An old man is almost mad of sexual desire to a young
slave, Casina, who belongs to his wife. He has sent
away his son, because he is also in love with the
slave. His wife is very jealous and tries to destine
the girl to her son. Both parties try to win the girl
by giving her in marriage to one of their own slaves,
since the owner of the slave has the rights on the
first night. In the end they draw lots. The father's
slave wins, but the mother dresses another one of her
slaves as bride, who gives the old father a good
beating. But in the epilogue is told that Casina is a
freeborn abandoned child, and that she will marry the
son. Not only Casina, but also the son, her lover,
does not appear in the play itself.

CIVITES, PEREGRINII AMICII NOVA ROMA!!!!

ONCE AGAIN.........LIVE ACTION HERE AT THE AMPHITEATRUM
FLAVIUM....ROMA!!!

THE LUDI VENATORII OF THE LUDI APOLLINARES OF NOVA ROMA, IN
HONOUR OF FAIR
APOLLO!!!!

Right from my vantage point I get a full view of the Entire
Roman Senate, a
sea of whiTe and purple stripes, amongst this august group
of people.

The happiness and the celebration of this event has not let
up since the
first day!!

Pompeia here, once again, to offer a play by play of the
action today.

Marcus Darius Firmitus, Legatus of Canada Orientalis has his
servents taking
drink orders.......he is buying a 'round'.

"Why" is he buying a round you might ask???

Well, Marce and I are always playing little tricks on one
another, and the
last time we gathered for a provincial meeting, we were
enjoying a few
drinks....and I told him "hey, the next time we are together
at a social
gathering, the round was his......heee heee.....

Hey I can't help it if the next social gathering is 'here'
in this 'big
round' place, full of people who drink.!!!!!

(Pompeia slaps her knee and laughs
loudly...brrrrahhhhhahhh!!!!)

Oh, you must think this is inconscienable on my
part....nahhhh, not really,
our Legatus Nova Gallia is literally 'swimming in
money''...this expense is
like a teaspoon of what to him....seriously

(Pompeia waves to her very busy legatus!!!)

HEY TINK, YOU MADE IT....OH THIS IS SO COOL.

Quirites, this is my sister Tink, more formally "Aeternia"
owner of Musarum
Coorperation, a subsiduary of which is the Musarum
Television Network, which
is carrying the Ludi.

Tink whispers to Po: Ahhhhh.....I *don't* know *how* you
talked me into
cohosting this *spectacle* today.......I am a *busy* woman,
Soror....with
far more responsibilities than *yewwwww* obviously have.

Po to Tink: Would you *mind* turning off your mike when you
deliver your
snippy remarks....pray tell, *what* dearest Tinky is
*soooooo* much more
important than a few minutes of attendence at the Ludi, hmm?

Tink: (with mike turned off) I happened to have an
appointment at Designs
by Fabius for a new outfit for a corporate meeting that
simply must *go
well*, but alas...you wouldn't know a *thing* about that,
now would you
darling? Thanks to yewwwww, I'll have to wait Gods knows how
long to get in
to see Fabius....he isn't exactly a 'five and dime'
designer, you know.

Po grits her teeth, but maintains her composure and typical
calm, cool
manner (yeah right!) and gets to the business of the Ludi.

Amicii, the opening ceremonies are about to begin!!!!
Pontifex Marcus
Cassius Iulianus will perform a ritual in honour of Apollo,
and the National
Anthem shall be sung by Britannia Spearus, accompanied by
'the crooning
tribune' our beloved Gneus Salix Astur!!!

Po to Tink: *What* are you doing, Tink? (Tink at present,
flips through a
portfolio of papers with cell phone in hand). Tinky, I
*thought* you might
be so good as to render a *few* comments about the ludi.

Tink to Po: Soror, *when* will you *finally* figure things
out??? My
*mere* presence is enough, given my position, wouldn't you
say???

Po: uggh

Tink: I am considering the cancellations of some of the
Musarum shows.

Po: Don't you dare cancel Marcus Audens, M.D.!!!!...Matrona
will be
devestated!!!!!!

Tink: No, but I think "Libertas or Ambitius?" must go.

THE ACTION HAS BEGUN!!!!

SCREAMING, SCREAMING SCREAMING IS ALL YOU HEAR!!!!!......IS
IT THE BEATLES?
THE STONES? THOROGOOD?..........NO!!!!!!!!!!

IT IS THE ILLUSTRIOUS PROPRAETOR ITALIA FRANCISCUS APULUS
CAESAR!!!

JUST LISTEN TO THE CROWD, LAUDING THE HOST PROPRAETOR OF
THIS AUGUST
EVENT!!!!

Surrounded by his Lictors, his warm *pepsident* smile, his
cool shades, he
waves and blows kisses to his admiring public, especially
the ones with two
X chromosomes...hee heee

One woman stands and screams "O you doth teach the torches
to burn
bright"!!!!

Tink rolls her eyes in disgust "such barbaric and forward
behaviour" That's
not even Roman...

The Venator in question: Aurum of Baetica, of the Ludus
Matutinus.
A fairly new fighter, but a strength of 35 and a resistence
of 35...nice
matching numbers.

Our popular Propraetor paid 7,000 sestertii for this brute,
and 2,500 in
ludus fees. Caesar now has 500 sestertii uncommitted.

WHAT'S THIS???

THAT HAS GOT TO BE THE BIGGEST BUFFALO I HAVE EVER
SEEN.....AND HE'S FROM
ITALIA.......MIGHTY BIG BUFFALOE YOU HAVE IN THESE HERE
PARTS!!!

"Buffie" has a strength of 30 and a resistence of 18.

THE FIGHT BEGINS.......

(Pompeia and Tink receive their drinks from Marcus Darius
Firmitus...triple
virgin zombies)

Aurum runs with flank speed toward the buffalo's
behind.....and using it as
a box horse lands smack dab in the middle of his back. Aurum
is bucking
him....the buffalo is racing aroung the arena with our
fighter on this
back.....

What's this??

Our fighter takes off his leather cuirass, and with the
buffalo bucking
back, manages to secure it tightly around the beast's
neck... the beast is
moving his next, running frantically, and noisily.

The ensuing weakness of the beast gives the following:

AURUM STRENGTH 30 AND THE BUFFALO AS MERE RESISTENCE OF 7

Within about a minute of tenacious holding of the cuirass in
place and
continue bucking of the buffalo's back by our fighter, THE
ELEPHANT HIS
SUCCUMED.

AURUM VICTOR!!!!! Final Resistance 32, our Buff, none.

AND OUR BELOVED PROPRAETOR FRACISCUS APULUS CAESAR HAS AN
EVEN BIGGER AND
BRIGHTER PEPSIDENT SMILE........all right!!!!!!!!!

Buona Fortuna to our fighter in future combative
pursuits!!!!

ENJOY THE FESTIVITIES (AND THE DRINKS!!!) AMICII, AND WE
SHALL RETURN AFTER
A BRIEF NETWORK TIMEOUT!!!

Tink pipes into the mike 'THIS IS THE MUSARUM TELEVISION
NETWORK'

Yunno, Po, as long as I have owned this company, I have
never had the
privilege of saying that!!

That's two comments I've given.......so I'm outta here,
Po....tah tah!!!

(Po trying to look as though she feels bad )

OUR NEXT ENCOUNTER......

Making his way into the arena for introduction and reception
is:

Curile Aedile Caeso Fabius Quintilianus.......know also by
his admirers as
the "Scandinavian Fabian"!!!! and "Snowman"!!!

He has with him, his lictors, and three of his finest
purebred dogs, whom he
loves so much! How the dogs fend for his attention and
affections!!

The crowd cheers nonstop.......

His Venator........nooooo......VENATRIX!!!...from the Ludis
Leontinum, the
popular

DANIA of BITHYNIA!!!!!

Dania, 6'2", 180 lb......long blond hair, partially managed
by a braid, is
sporting a black leather, romper-type attaire, high, black
studded high heel
boots, a whip, and a spiked ball and chain.

Caeso has paid 7,000 Sestertii for Dania, and her ludus
2,000. Caeso has
1,000 left over.

The party of Fabius exists the combat area, and herein
enters:

A HIPPOPOTAMUS FROM AEGYPTUS

Hmmm, he's about three times the size of Dania, it looks.

THE ACTION BEGINS.

Dania is playing a bit with ouR foe...lasooing him around
the neck and
letting him go..........three times she's done this. Our
beast is getting
mighty intolerant of our lady's overtures, and makes a run
for her headon.

About four feet from the person of Dania, she lasoos him
once again, this
time NOT letting go....she is tugging away at our beast from
a distance, and
he is unable to escape. Dania has a formidable set of arm
muscles, upon
which, I'd say, her life depends right now.

Our Venatrix: resistence 32, and our hungry hippo: 10

The hippo manages to free himself, and pursues Dania!!!!
For a big beast he
has moved quickly. Grabbing Dania, in the left leg, Dania
frees herself
with her spiked ball by deliver a whopping blow to the head
of the hippo.

Dania relassoos him and delivers a few more blows to the
head of the hippo

THE HIPPO SUCCUMBS......alas

DIANIA VICTIX WITH A FINAL RESISTENCE OF 31 and our hippo,
zero

THE CROWD GOES WILD WITH THE VICTORY OF THE BEAUTIFUL
DANIA....SHE IS LIKE
AN AMAZON....CUTE AND TOUGH!!!

Caeso Fabius is a happy, and richer man....the dogs of our
curule aedile
appear as happy as their master.

Dania gives the crowd a two thumbs up and leaves the arena.

AND THIS ENDS THE ACTION OF TODAY, AMICII....THE LUDI
VENATORII SHALL RETURN
TOMORROW.

In the meantime, there are other activities to be enjoyed
today as part of
the glorious festival of the Ludi Apollinares.

Bene vale et BUONA FORTUNA!!!!!!!!!!!!

Looks like the 'Reply All' button must have been hit again. These have
happened before I've seen it.
It should've went to me I believe and me only. My apologies, I thought it
would be nice to have an

the Goddess Aradia.
No intention of insulting of anyone was meant.

word from Charles Leland who did a lot of
research on Italian Witchcraft.

Greetings,
Diana (neither the Goddess Diana nor the Witch
Queen :-)

Much of Gardner's inspiration came from Ceremonial Magick via the OTO and
perhaps Goetic Magick. Leland was perhaps an influence, but I don't see it
as the only influence.

There is also an obvious Masonic link with Gardner and Co-Masonry and
Theosophy.

Also, there are other Witches who are not Gardnerian, but who were around in
the 60s (ie., 1734 tradition et al).

Blessings;

Gaius Cassius Athanasius
