A more probable story is the one told by many roman
civ Proffessors about the origins of the word Lupa,
'she wolf'. Today it is a less than popular romance
language female name, in spanish 'Lupe'(pronounced
'Loop-eh'). It basically means female dog and so
"bitch". Well the romans being keen observers of human
and animal behaviour used the word colloquially for a
Prostitute. So Romulus and Remus could have been
raised by a prostitute instead of an actual animal.

Actually Lupe in Spanish comes from the name Lupita which is short
for the name Guadalupe, the place in Mexico where the Virgin Mary
appeared to an Indian in the 16 th century telling him to live in
harmony and make peace with the Spanish. Guadalupe is a reveared and
popular name in Mexico and I know dozens of Latin American women
including a few of my nices with that name. It is an interesting
point you make about the word name in Latin but I do not think you
can equate it to modern day Spanish.

Yours Respectfully,

AVETE OMNES

Since, as you know, Senator Caeso Fabius Quintilianus can't follow
Nova Roma very much in this period because of problems with his
computer, he asked me to carry on setting up the potential Sodalitas
Iuventutis Romanae.

Now it is possible to vote in order to choose a logo for this group:
you can find the proposals at

I am well aware of that origin for many Mexican forms
of Lupe. But I have Iberian ancestors with the name
predating the Guadalupe 'sighting'. It was actually a
classics professor who cited to me the Latin origins
for this and many other spanish words.

Saluete Sacerdotes!

I have been receiving continous complaints from the citizen Fabius Salix Lucentinus. He sollicited his inclusion in one of the six existing vacants in the Collegium Pontificium, this happened two months ago. Lucentinus insisted but no tramit acceptation or denied sollicitude has send to this citizen.

After have examined the qualifications of Lucentinus I think he would do an excellent work in hte Collegium Pontificium but the carelessness of the Pontifex Maximus seems to lack any consideration for the improvement of the officia religiosa.

Has he also contacted the Collegium Pontificium to check that his
application was received? As the address "pontifices@novaroma.org"
gets a great deal of spam, due to its having been prominently featured
on the web site, the application may have been simply overlooked.

The Pontifex Maximus is merely first among equals. Any Pontifex could
have introduced the topic for discussion; if none of them did, perhaps
it was never received.

Vale, Octavius.
