If all you know of ancient Rome is what you saw in "Gladiator," you're
in for a surprise. For the Romans, daily life included lively
entertainment, practical military strategy, healthy, delicious meals,
comfortable, simple clothing and a society that emphasized art, virtue
and service.

Nova Roma, an international cultural organization based in Maine, is
proud to sponsor Roman Market Day, a one-day even that brings history to
life with costumed re-enactors, workshops, activities, food and more.
Come visit us at Sacred Oaks, Wells, Maine, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept.
7, 2002! The cost is $4 for adults, free for children 12 and under.

GAMES AND SPECTACLES: Nova Roma is proud to welcome Legio XXIV, a Roman
re-enactor unit with accurate historical displays of combat armor,
weapons and clothing. Ask the Praefectus about the Roman soldier's life,
work and skills, or find out how you can get involved in Roman
re-enacting.

We also welcome the Ludus Magnus gladiatorial troupe, which offers a
lively and informative display of the show combats that the Romans so
enjoyed. A Children's Table will offer parent-directed crafts on Roman
themes, with coloring pages and a make-your-own mosaic activity.

ROMAN SHOPPING: Commerce made the Roman world go 'round, and it's no
different today. Our vendors include:
-- La Wren's Nest: The East Coast's premier source of historically
accurate Roman items, including armor, weapons, tunics, togas, women's
costumes, jewelry and accessories.
-- Imperium Ancient Arts: Affordable, genuine ancient artifacts from the
Roman world and beyond. Special selection of low-cost items appeals to
the beginning collector and student.

FOOD FOR BODY AND MIND: Your $4 admission fee to the Roman Market Day
includes the chance to partake of the Roman Dayboard, a cold collation
of authentic Roman food and drink. Educational displays will include
information on Roman weddings, religion, maps and more.

ABOUT NOVA ROMA: Nova Roma is an international organization dedicated to
reviving and studying the ancient history, culture and religion of
ancient Rome. Members serve in re-enactor groups, review historical
texts, raise money for Roman-oriented charities, study Latin, cook
ancient foods, write poetry on Roman themes and play Roman games . We
also share the results of our researches with each other and with the
world through our Web site, http://www.novaroma.org.

Joining Nova Roma is free, though Citizens who wish to vote in the
group's elections are asked to pay a small fee. To find out more, visit

I hope that didn't come across as spam! I copied the main list and the
Nova Britannia list in on the press release I sent to about 40 news
outlets. There's a lot going on in New England that weekend, but I'm
hoping we'll get a respectable turnout!

referred to below by their initials, and are listed in
alphabetical order by nomen:

Marcus Arminius Maior (MAM)

Patricia Cassia (PC)
Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix (LCSF)
Pompeia Cornelia Strabo (PCS)

to Senator Quintus Fabius Maximus, and Senator Caius
Flavius Diocletianus forwarded his proxy to Senator
Lucius Equitius Cincinnatus.

The following senators did not vote:

Minervina Iucundia Flavia
Alexander Iulius Caesar Probus Macedonius

Gaius Tullius Triumphius Cicero

"UTI ROGAS" indicates a vote in favor of an item,
"ANTIQUO" or "NEGAT" is a vote against, and "ABSTINEO"
is an abstention.

The items for consideration are as follows:

-----

ITEM I. Ratification of Constitutional Amendement: Lex
Octavia de Centuriata
Item PASSED. Uti Rogas (Yes): 16 votes; Antiquo (No):
1 vote.

LCSF: ANTIQUO.

QFM: UTI ROGAS. I agree with Marius. The name Octavia
de Ratione Centuriarum is much more descriptive name
and should substituted at a later date.

TLF: UTI ROGAS. The ancient Res Publica started with
only thirty centuriae, and our population is clearly
too small to support one hundred and ninety-three of
them. Therefore this measure is both traditional and
useful.

CMM: UTI ROGAS. I vote to pass the amendment with the
suggestion that the Consules consider revising the
title at some point. I offer the title Lex Octavia de
Ratione Centuriarum for consideration and stand ready
to offer comments on request.

MOG: UTI ROGAS. This amendment, which allows for a
number of centuries proportional to the population,
will greatly contribute to a smooth running of the
December elections, and decrease the likelihood that a
"run-off" will be needed because no candidate obtained
a majority of centuries. The people have already
passed this lex overwhelmingly.

ATMC: UTI ROGAS. With the relatively few citizens that
we have at this time, I believe this is needed.

-----

ITEM II. Payment of $84 to Provincia Hispania
Item PASSED unanimously. Uti Rogas (Yes): 17 votes.

PC : UTI ROGAS. I am impressed by this Provincia's
activity and hope that it will serve as a model for
others.

QFM: UTI ROGAS. We must live up to our promises

MOG: UTI ROGAS. Hispania is a dynamic and active
province, with several events planned for the
citizens. The citizens of Hispania have made a
reasonable request for their portion of the money
collected in that province, and we should grant it
without delay

TLF: UTI ROGAS. Hispania is legally entitled to the
money. Even if that weren't the case, it's a
reasonable request from an outstanding provincia.

ATMC: UTI ROGAS. I believe that this is due to
Provincia Hispania. Beyond that, Provincia Hispania
has certainly contributed much, and is one of our most
enthusiastic provinces.
