Salvete,

I'm putting up a new website for Canada Occidentalis and I need help finding
some pictures.

I need a photo or other image of a reconstructed image of each -

the Temple of Saturn
the Temple of Mars
a basilica from a provincial town (Lugdunum for example)

Also, if I could get a picture of a statue of Mars and one of Saturn as
well.

Thanks in advance,

Subject: [Nova-Roma] LUDI ROMANI: THE GREAT FINAL!!!
From: "Alejandro Carneiro" <piteas@inicia.es>
Date: Tue, 17 Sep 2002 13:24:57 -0000
Avete, Cives Novi Romani!

The Circus burns of passion this evening. The noisy public dress only
in two colors: The green and the red. It is a titanic struggle
between these two powerful factiones. The white and blue fans have
disappeared, hidden in their homes, because they donīt want to suffer
the painful humiliation of the two-color final.
But there is a clear advantage for the greens. They are three
against a solitary and brave red. However, the solitary red chariot
is not a simple one. Itīs Hyacintha Magna, the chariot of the evil,
psychotic and unforseeable Theodorus Citius, "the red scourge".
Therefore the race promises to be bloody and exciting. Probably three
green chariots are a little number against Theodorus and his mad
horses.

These are the champion chariots in search of the glory:

Inexpugnabilis
driver: Ignis
by Caius Curius Saturninus
Race tactic: (1)
Factio: Praesina

Hyacintha Magna
driver: Theodorus Citius
by Tiberius Arminius Hyacinthus
Race tactic: (5)
Factio: Russata

Volatilis
driver: Pelops Celer
by Titus Labienus Fortunatus
Race tactic: (1)
Factio: Praesina

Essedum
driver: Italicus
by Manius Constantinus Serapio
Race tactic: (3)
Factio: Praesina

The race begins and the public howls in the steps when the drivers
make sound their whips!

Inexpugnabilis takes advantage in the first lap but soon it suffers
the harassment of Theodorus and his Hyacintha, which can not be
stopped by Essedum and Volatilis. The red fans shout resting to their
chariot, they know that it prepares a dirty play. Itīs true.
Hyacintha pushes Inexpugnabilis against the wall of the circus.
Inexpugnabilis tries to escape of the pressure of its wicked rival
but its right wheel hits on the wall, the chariot splits in two
pieces and the driver Ignis is seen off... in the air, flying as a
fat goldfinch up to falling down on the sand and being dragged by his
horses. Ignis get to cut the reins and to come up with scanty wounds,
but when he gets up, a red piano falls down on his head and finishes
with his career. No doubt, the red tactics are terrible!
The green fans are amazed of the wicked tactics of their rivals.
They claim justice to the aedilis and protest for no being controls
in the doors of entry to the Circus to prevent the public from
putting inside so dangerous objects. But the honorable aedilis
answers that... well, it is prohibited to throw weapons or sharp
objects on the sand, but about pianoes there is nothing legislated in
the Roman Laws.
The race is now more aequal... Or not? Because Hyacintha attacks
again. Its new victim is Volatilis, that it is too pushed against the
wall by the implacable Theodorus. The driver Pelops Celer isnīt so
passive as Ignis and he answers with strong and sonorous lashes on
Theodorusī body. But the green driver relaxes in his struggle, does
not look at the red piano fixed on the middle of the sand and his
chariot hits with the damn musical instrument. Another casualty in
the greens!
The fans of the Praesina are afraid of a catastrophe. Only a green
chariot, Essedum, stays in the race against the madman Theodorus and
his devilish horses. The red fans shout filled with enthusiasm, they
think that the victory is for them, nobody can win to Hyacintha
Magna. Nevertheless, Essedum is not a vulgar chariot. It is real
champion, a green arrow runnig on the sand as an eagle for the sky.
Theodorus lashes to his horses but he doesnīt to catch his rival. The
driver Italicus smiles and makes obscene gestures to Theodorus, who
shouts rabidly while his horses neigh furious, but itīs impossible
this time. Essedum escapes and crosses the finish line under the
deafening shouting of the green fans. Essedum win! Praesina win!!!
The Ludi Romani are for the chariot of Manius Contantinus Serapio!!.

All the members of the factio Praesina congratulates the citizen
Serapio, they embrace him and lift on shoulders. The half of the
public shouts his name while another half keeps silent, embittered by
the defeat.
Arminius Hyacinthus gives a pat to his Theodorus for the good work
made in the race but the angry Theodorus bites the hand, swearing
cruel revenge in the next Ludi.

Thatīs all in the circus today. The Praesina has a new hero and
champion. The Ludi Romani are green!

Result:

1st: Essedum
2nd: Hyacintha Magana
3th: Accident (Volatilis)
4th: Accident (Inespugnabilis)

By the way, Anyone can remove the red piano out of the sand?

Avete Quirites!

PRA-SI-NA! PRA-SI-NA! PRA-SI-NA!

Well done, Mani Constanti! Italicus is to be lauded for his victory at the
reigns of Essedum. Indeed, the greens as a whole deserve praise for working as
a team, sacrificing two brave drivers in order to distract that vile brigand,
Theodorus Citius, long enough for their remaining teammate to win the day.
Such tactics bring to mind the glorious sacrifice of the Horatii when they
fought the Curiatii for Rome's honor.

As for Theodorus Citius, I have consulted an augur on his behalf, and the omens
were dire indeed. Beware falling musical instruments while wandering the
Subura, O driver!

PRA-SI-NA! PRA-SI-NA! PRA-SI-NA!

Under the authority vested in me as the Praefectus Fabrum of the
Sodalitas Egressus, and having recieved no objections to this course of
action, and further having recieved several encouragements for this
action, I now create a third department within the Sodalitas Egressus,
which will be known as;

" The NR Land Project"

The two temporary appointments previously made, are now permanent
appointments for the next six months, at which time the necessity for an
electon of officers shall be considered. The purpose of this department
will be to examine the considerations for this project, to sift through
the recommendations previously made in regard to the NR Land Project,
recieve and consider new suggestions, comments and ideas from NR
citizens in relation to this project, and draw together this mass of
information, concerns, ideas and comments into a proposal for NR Senate
consideration.

To this end the NR Land Project website will be left intact for the use
of interested NR Citizens.

The thrust of this effort shall be towards the establishment of a series
of physical places around the world where Nova Romans can meet and do
face-to face events and activities. The current staff selection
encompasses two gentlemen from European countries as well as myself.

The previous list of officers for the NR Land Project is now amended to
the number four, as follow:

Dominus Praefectus -- NR Land Project -- Not Selected;

Praefectus Structrix -- NR Land Project Planner / Designer-- not
selected;

Praefectus Investigator -- NR Land Project Researcher -- Manius
Constantinius Serapio;

Praefectus Pecuniae -- NR Land Project Finance -- Sextus Appollonius
Scipio.

As Praefectus Fabrum I will undertake to fill in the unappointed
positions, until proper appointments can be made, so that we may begin
an immediate determination toward the NR Land Project Goals in
accordance with those outlined in Message 117 (NR Land Project Weblist).

Beneficarius / Scriba-Major Strabo -- please take note of the above
changes to the Sodalitas Egressus Organization, make such changes and
additions as are necessary and post them in the files / archives where
they may be reviewed by any interested member of the Sodalitas.

Respectfully;

Marcus Minucius Audens

Members of the Sodalitas Militarium and Egressus, Citizens and

Beneficarius / Scriba-Major

Pompeia Cornelia Strabo

as a

Militarium /Egressus Maratime Praetor (Fleet

Laticlavius (Senior Tribune, accepted into the
Senate).

These awardss shall be honored and accepted in both the Sodalitas
Militarium and the Sodalitas Egressus. and further shall be placed in
the list archives of both.

Beneficarius Strabo has served both of these Sodalitas' as a Staff
Officer from the beginning of her acceptance therein. She serves in the
Sodalitas Miitarium as the Praefectus Naval, and in both Sodalitas' as
the Scriba-Major with the present Honorary Title of Beneficarius
(Benefitted One) -- with the right and authority to carry messages and
speak for Marcus Minucius Audens as the Praefectus of both above listed
Sodalitas.

She has in her long-time service more than qualified for these
additional honors in her diligence at maintaining both Sodalitas
documents, acting as a senior advisor to the Praefectus and serving very
effectively and extensively on the Senior Staff of each Sodalitas.

She has in her own right been elected to the office of Praetor, and for
her efforts in other areas has been added to the roll of NR Senators.
She is an active Provincial Praetor and has organized two successful
Roman activities in her Provincia as well as numerous face-to face
get-togethers. I have not had the opportunity to meet the lady
face-to-face, but have been privaledged on many occasions to speak with
her by telephone and recieve her excellent and well articulated ideas.
She has also served as one of my strongest and most effective Consular
Advisors.

These above awarded honors are long overdue, in my humble estimation,
and it is my extreme pleasure and honor to acknowledge her very
extensive efforts for both the Sodalitas Militarium and the Sodalitas
Egressus in this very modest way, and together with these honors go my
hope that she will continue to serve these organizations long into the
future.

These awards made this date in the Consulship of Octavius Germanicus and
Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix.

Most Respectfully and With Extreme Pleasure at this Unique Privaledge;

the Scriba-Major with the present Honorary Title of
Beneficarius
(Benefitted One) -- with the right and authority to carry
messages and
speak for Marcus Minucius Audens as the Praefectus of both
above listed
Sodalitas.

She has in her long-time service more than qualified for
these
additional honors in her diligence at maintaining both
Sodalitas
documents, acting as a senior advisor to the Praefectus and
serving very
effectively and extensively on the Senior Staff of each
Sodalitas.

She has in her own right been elected to the office of
Praetor, and for
her efforts in other areas has been added to the roll of NR
Senators.
She is an active Provincial Praetor and has organized two
successful
Roman activities in her Provincia as well as numerous
face-to face
get-togethers. I have not had the opportunity to meet the
lady
face-to-face, but have been privaledged on many occasions to
speak with
her by telephone and recieve her excellent and well
articulated ideas.
She has also served as one of my strongest and most
effective Consular
Advisors.

These above awarded honors are long overdue, in my humble
estimation,
and it is my extreme pleasure and honor to acknowledge her
very
extensive efforts for both the Sodalitas Militarium and the
Sodalitas
Egressus in this very modest way, and together with these
honors go my
hope that she will continue to serve these organizations
long into the
future.

These awards made this date in the Consulship of Octavius
Germanicus and
Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix.

By the authority vested in me as Praefectus Fabrum of the Sodalitas
Egressus, I now establish within the said Sodalitas, a new department of
Historia Research and Publication. The purpose of this department will
be the editing and the research of topics of both the ancient world and
such topics from the modern world as relate to ancient Rome for the
benefit of Nova Roma and the Outreach Program to which Sodalitas is
dedicated. Temporaily the Praefectus Dominus of this depatment has not
been selected, and I shall fill in as that officer until the Praefectus
Dominus has been selected.

Further, I now establish a new department within Sodalitas Egressus,
which shall be known as the;

Region / Provincial Research Department

whose responsibility and purpose will be to determine information
relating to ancient Rome from the various regions and provinces. The
selected representatives from these areas will gather specific and local
information relating to ancient Rome. Currently there are several
Praefecti who are appointed to that task together with their selected
Scribae The Praefecti and their Staffs will be a part of this new
department, and will cooperate with the above new Depatment of Research
and Publication as indicated above in the soon to be forthcoming
Standard Operating Procedures. The Dominus Praefectus for this
department has been selected. He is Manius Constantinius Serapio. Two
additional departments are currently under consideration for addition to
the Sodalitas Egressus as well.

I am further pleased to appoint Scriba Historia Gaius Basilicatus
Agricola, and Scriba Historia Q. Fabius Maximus (specialty--roman
military history) to the new department of:

Historia Research and Publication.

Scriba Historia Q.F. Maximus will be pleased to operate both in the
Sodalitas Militarium and in the Sodalitas Egressus.

I am pleased to make these improvements and changes engendered by the
interests and industry shown by the members of the Sodalitas Egressus
and the Officers and Scriba appointed to it.

Beneficarius / Scriba-Major Strabo -- Please make the necessary
adjustments to the appointee / department list for the Sodalitas and
deposit such in the archives for all to review.

My sinerest thanks to all in Egressus who have been s very supportive
and productive in the goals of this Sodalitas. I am extremly proud and
at the same tme humbled by the success of this small idea which burst
upon the scene some years ago.

Respectfully;

Marcus Minucius Audens -- Praefectus Fabrum -- Sodalitas Egressus --

Salvete.

I agree. I have been fortunate to work on several projects with the lady in
question and found her to helpful, focused and if she doesn't know about
something here in Rome she is willing to learn, even do her own research for
discovery.
Besides all her above duties, she is in ER nurse, one the hardest jobs in the
caregiving field.
Who knows the number of lives she has saved in such a demanding profession?
We here in Rome are most blessed to have her to be interested in us.
Three cheers for Pompeia Cornelia Strabo!!!
AVE! AVE! AVE!

To M. Minicius Audens from F. Galerius Aurelianus Secundus. Salve.

There is a craftsman named Frank Ralphs in Britannia who produces excellent
reproductions of Roman style composite bows. His work was used extensively
during the filming of the movie "Gladiator" and his prices are quite
reasonable. I believe his Krim bow runs about 70 pounds and can be made up
to a 65# pull. He also does arrows with period broadheads and swallowtails.
You will also need a thumbring to get the maximum effect. You can find
extensive material in a three volume set of books about bow making. I will
get you the title and ISBN numbers if you like. Also, check out a book
entitled "The Auxilia of the Roman Army" for details on such units. Dan
Shadrake also has some extensive information on sagitarii and funditores
units in the Imperial period.

Vale.

>From F. Galerius Aurelianus Secundus to Q. Fabius Maximus. Salve.

I thank you for your information on the Fifth Class of the Servian Army. I
knew that slingers had been an intregal part of the early Republican armies
but I have always thought that following the Third Punic War that slingers
were eliminated from the regular army of the Republic. Some of the material
that I had researched indicated that both Belearic Slingers and Cretan
archers were hired by the Republic as mercenaries just as they had been by
the Greeks, Carthaginians, and Macedonians. I always found it somewhat odd
that most of the Western Mediterranean cultures had very little archery in
their armies and even the Celts and Celtic-Iberians made little use of it.
The earliest mention of auxiliary archers in the Roman army seems to date
from the wars against the Selucids, Pyrrhus, and Pompey's campaigns against
Mithridates of Pontus. In Graham Webster's work, the Romans began to use
archers during about 600-650 AUC and they remained an integral part of Roman
armies there after. Since the eastern cultures made more extensive use of
cavalry, the bow was more useful when they came up against the Parthians.

I would like to be considered for the post of Historical Scriba. I have the
time (I own/operate a tobacco shop & have my computer there), the interests,
and the training (degrees in history with minors in archaeology/anthropology)
as well as being versed in Classical History. I believe that I write well
and have a good knowledge of the American-English language along with a
smattering of Old English and Latin. Please consider me for this positition.

They were. We assume, by Pyrrhos time, that they were made accenus. While
the Etruscans did have the bow, they didn't use it time of war. The same
with the Gauls and Germans. Italians seemed to consider it somehow
unhonorable.
It was the sneaky Easterns like Pyrrhos who used bow. The Romans swept those
Cretans out of the way, with their Velites, and didn't think much of it. As
the Romans become a powerful nation, they had access to other nations'
resources. We have Cretan mercenaries being sent as a gift from Syrakuse to
the Republic, as a thank you gift for grain delivery.
This is the first time bow armed units are mentioned in a Roman army. When
Rhodes became friend of the Republic, their excellent slingers were used as
allies, mercenaries such as Balearic slingers were also used. Cretans were
used as well as Syrians. While Syrians were cheap, they were also
untrustworthy. When they were used as Auxiliaries in the Principate, often
they were stationed in provinces far from their homeland.
By the Late Principate, the bow's influence had come to Rome. Up to 30% of a
Roman Army could be bow armed, while in the Eastern Empire this could be up
to 100%.

Valete
Q. Fabius Maximus
