Subject: [Nova-Roma] Roman Funeral Rites
From: Anthony Scott <optio456@yahoo.com>

Hello,

Being a military man and getting ready to go overseas, they are asking us to write our wills, just in case...

Anyway, I would like to know if anyone knows archaeologically verified Roman ritual surrounding funerals becuase I want to have a proper Roman funeral and need to spell it out, since my Christian Mother will otherwise insist on an annoying Christian service.

Can anyaone help me?

Thanks,

Anthony

any personas from any Roman period.

Technically, it does. But that hasn't stopped people from doing the
Roman period anymore than it has stopped people from doing Japanese
personae despite the fact that the SCA is ostensibly about (white)
European personae from 600 to 1600.[aside: it took me five years to
get local SCAdians out of the habit of thinking of Blacks as only
being "Moors" as opposed to contributors to European culture in
period... but that OOT]

The thing about the SCA is that it has a longtime bureaucracy and
infrastructure. It's easier to be a part of the SCA and do Roman (or
Middle Eastern or Gypsy or Asian] personae than to start up a new
group. Plus there's the social factor -- more people to beat on in
the SCA *grin*.

At any rate, I look forward to learning more about Nova Roma.

I've only been to one Ren Fair - that was enough for me.

As for me, I know several Ealdormerians (SCA - Ontario, Canada) who
make good mead. If I ever need a bottle I can send my cousin -who
still attends SCA events - to pick some up for me.

Then again, I can actually get it at the liquor store here (in
Toronto).

I might be able to track them down for you -- where do you live, so I
can check in your local area?

I sent the material to Antony directly but for those who are
interested you may wish to read the following:

in Rome. Derek B. Counts.

If you cannot get a hold of this article email me -- I can forward a
copy to you.

Caeso Fabius and his crew have done a marvelous job giving us games!
Thank you very much for this contribution to Nova Roma's culture and
entertainment.

As for funerals, Antony, the chief customs included cremation, a
procession, and where possible a memorial stone -- much like ours! More
here:
http://www.umich.edu/~kelseydb/Exhibits/Death_on_Display/
Cremation_Group/funeral.html

It is quite possible to design a funeral that has Roman elements but
does not offend a Christian family member. For the purposes of your
overseas deployment, it might be perfectly OK just to specify that you
want to be cremated. If you have time to prepare such a thing, you
might get hold of an ancient Roman coin and ask that it be put in your
mouth in the event of your death, to pay Charon.

In any event, I sincerely hope the preparations will not be needed!
Nova Roma has many Citizens serving in their macronational military
organizations. May Minerva keep them safe.

For those seeking mead, I have *heard* that it might be obtained
through the folks at La Wren's Nest, if you happen to catch up with
them at an event...

Salve

Within the next few days, the good people at Channel 4 will be airing
a series of programmes on Rome and Roman Britain.

On Saturday 21 September
6:50 p.m. Rome: The Model Empire
In the first of a season of documentaries on the Roman Empire,
Jonathan Freedland explores how the secret of Rome ' s success had
less to do with spears and centurions than with culture, psychology,
media and technology, and shows how echoes of the Empire resonate
through today ' s structures of international power and control.

It's the first ina season of programmes - it may be worth while
trying to get some of it on the net for non-british viewers

Beyond my technical capability I'm afraid but I thought I'd give
people the 'Head's Up' - Its not that often new programming on the
subject hits mainstream TV
