Dancing did occur in conjunction with theatre, I understand. Plus I
have come across a reference to a gladiator who had been trained to
both sing and dance:

Classical Antiquity, April 1996 v15 n1 p113(39)
The ideology of the arena. (Rome's arena) Erik Gunderson.

[I've got a text copy of this. Email me if you want it]

Romans liked actors, in so far as they were entertaining but not of
the same social sphere. Dancing women and prostitution had a tendency
to go hand and hand (this is true of medieval and renaissance Europe
and the "middle east")

There's an interesting essay on a mime by the name of Lycoris in:

Roman women / edited and with a new introduction by Augusto
Fraschetti ; translated by Linda Lappin. Chicago : University of
Chicago Press, 2001.

By the by, if you are interested in Vestals, matrons, and women in
politics this is a MUST READ.

In 1989, when I was 19 years old, I got the opportunity to visit Lake
Avernus and the reputed caves of the Sybil. I was not Pagan yet, but
I could feel the presence of the early Christians who had hid out
there.

But the mythical Sybil (in some incarnation) made herself known to me
too. I could not resist singing in the caves. Being still a Roman
Catholic, I sang O Santissima. But somehow, looking back, I think my
choice was appropriate.

Salve again Lucia,

Thanks for your input into the message board for today was one of our slower days. I am sure the gods of Rome will chastise anyone here who accuses you of being shy! (grin)

I haven't heard anyone here mention anything about their racial background yet. Not very many NR's have posted their photos in the Album civium or yahoo profiles so who knows? We are expanding into North Africa and would love to have more members from Sub Saharan Africa as well as the Carribian, South America etc. It could be that you are very unique here Lucia. If your also involved with others from the Afro-American community, please encourage them to join NR; unless, of course, you relish your uniqeness (grin)

is the day for celebrating the GENIVS AVGVSTI, Augustalia.
While inviting everybody to do so, if so pleases them, I would like to

don't know who's entitled to do so but I suggest to add it to the
festivities there contained. Or there is a special reason for avoiding

Roman BriefpapierSalvete,

By the way, I am back from a 2 month absentia do to moving house, work
committments and Pagan
committments. Did anyone notice? :-(((

Unfortunately, in this world of numbers, we are all statistics,
everywhere.... But we are also individuals.

Like old Rome, Nova Roma is made up of all kinds of different people, each
bringing their own gifts (and flaws :-) to the group!

I think that Nova Romans with real Roman blood flowing through their veins
are the real minority here :-))) So don't worry about being a 'so-called'
minority-- that is just a way for the macronational governments to box us
all into categories.

Serapio's proposal: As usual, our Serapio has a great idea. Certainly, there
are a few bankers amongst us, a few writers, and those handy with organizing
things.

Salvete, Titus Octavius Pius et omnes:

Please note that many sites block *all* mail from Hotmail due to the
very high percentage of spam coming from them. Hotmail is a spammer
haven, almost exclusively due to their setup process; a simple script
will create as many accounts as you wish. This allows spammers to violate
Hotmail's Terms of Service in whatever way they want - dropping the old
account and creating a new one is trivial.

Micr*s*ft knows about this, and has not changed the signup policy in the
many years that it's been a problem. Despite the fact that they have
implemented the MAPS RBL (Realtime BlackList), their own spam content
has not decreased and has only grown.

In addition to this, many spammers fake their headers to show that their
mail comes from Hotmail, which does not help matters at all.

In short, I would recommend against using it if you're looking to
decrease your spam count.

I pay for each "rack unit" allocated to me in a cabinet that I share
with three other local geeks/consultants. A rack unit is about 1.75
inches tall by nineteen inches wide; each of the two servers I have
there now takes up two rack units. (For those unfamiliar with
rack-mount hardware: imagine two "pizza boxes" stacked on top of
each other - that's the basic shape and size of one server).

Thanks, but it wouldn't be cost-effective to add another machine,
especially an older, non-rackmountable one. If it became necessary,
I'd have to install the list software on one of the two boxes that
are there now.

We looked at Mailman some time ago (when the original list was
improperly shut down). It didn't seem as featureful as Yahoo,
though perhaps this will change in the future.

Right now, I think switching from Yahoo would be a step backward;
I have not yet seen any list manager with as nice an interface
for users or moderators. The problems that some people are having
right now are likely temporary, and are the result of the upgrades
that Yahoo is doing.

Many other Yahoo lists, where new users are not on moderated status,
were suffering from a great deal of spam a few weeks ago - several
times a day, formerly-unknown addresses with usernames that were
a senseless jumble of letters would post messages with
subjects of "new pictures" or "ch3ck this site out", with the
message body being the URL of site that contained nothing but
pop-up advertisements. Those have completely vanished in the last
few days - Yahoo must be doing something right.

Thanks for the offer... perhaps we could consider it in the future
(using the existing servers - they have plenty of excess capacity)
but for now I think Yahoo is still the best place for this.

Vale, Octavius.

================================
September 16, 2755

Hon. Senator Marcus Minucius Audens,

Esteemed Citizen of Nova Roma

My Dear Senator:

I beg your leave to report, in my capacity as your paramilitary Staff
Advisor in the Sodalitas Militarium of Nova Roma, the following "after
action report" of the recent gathering of Nova Romans and friends of
Mother Roma, known as "Roman Market Day." This outstanding gathering
of dedicated and august Romaphiles was organized and hosted by our
friends and fellow Nova Romans, "Marcus Cassius Julianus" and "Patricia
Cassia." (aka: Will and Pat Bradford) of Wells. Maine and our friends
"Julie and Lawrence Brooks" of La Wren's Nest known throughout our
modern empire as purvyors and suppliers of some of the finest and most
accurate Roman civilian , military, and gladtorial gear available in
this age.

The Market Day was held at a retreat known as the "Sacred Oaks," a "new
age" retreat nestled in the spirit-ridden forests along the craggy
coastline of the northeast region of the North Atlantic Province (Nova
Britannia); N. Americanus. Legio XXIV, ably commanded by Praefectus
Commander Gallio Velius Marsallas (aka: George W. Metz) was on hand to
defend the attending citizens from any incursions by surly northern
barbarins seeking to upset the pageantry of the Markey Day celebration.
Fortunately for all involved, the craven barbarian dogs knew better than
to invoke the ire of one of modern Rome's most formidable and dedicated
commanders or his stalwart troops, and order was maintained throughout
the day. The Commander set up an impressive display of Roman Military
armaments (circa: late first century A.D. to fourth century A.D.), and ,
as always, engaged the attending citizens with his fornidable knowledge
on the subject. Presentations on various ballistae and other Roman
military subjects were also provided by Senator Marcus Minucius Audens
(aka: James Mathews), although your humble "Summa Palus" (top-ranked
gladiator) of the Ludus Magnus Gladitores ("Great School of the
Gladiators") attached to Legio XXIV as it's gladitorial school ("ludus")
was not directly privy to those presentations, as the crowd of curious
new-Roman citizens were persistant and most enthusiastic in thier
demands for information and demonstrations on the subject of
gladitorial engagement, and demanded our virtually constaant attention
to thier very well-concieved and pointed inquiries on the matter (a most
gratifying response from a very gracious assemblage of spectators
indeed).

Pro. Postumius Nero L. Sallustiae Albaniae S.P.D.

Salve,

To answer your inquisition, and noting that I have only been a citizen for
two months now, were you to look at my page in the Album Civium, you would
note that I could very truly refer to myself with the cognome of N. Cassius,
'Niger,' as a reference to my complexion as well. However that's not to say
that I'm jet black. I'm more of a brownish color, and if we ever meet, look
at my right arm and you'll note that I'm two-toned. Half of my body really
is lighter than the other half.

Going further, I'd also like to add to this conversation this bit of
interesting thought. The clay used in sculpture is generally mono-chrome.
Generally, too, sculptures were not painted, as far as I know, and those
that survive today do not have any color still on them other than that of
the clay, were there any to begin with. Thus, my thought for today is,
simply, whose to say that C. Iulius Caesar or Cn. Pompeius Magnus or even
(my favorite Roman) M. Tullius Cicero were not "black" men? All their
sculptures come out the color of the clay and not the person anyway. Just a
thought.

Vale,

Nero

Pompey was sneered at for his ['Gallic'] fair hair, not a 'black' characteristic! This form Herodotos (500BCE?) is fascinating though. He is commenting on the truth of the legend that Danae settled first Thebes and then Kolkhiz (Georgia) from 'Libya' or its neighbour Egypt.
That they are of African descent might be evident from their dark skin and frizzy black hair, but *one can meet men like that anywhere in Civilisation*: what confirms them as African is that they practise circumcision, a uniquely Egyptian barbarism".
It is that 'meet....anywhere' that is so interesting. Were the black peoples then living north of the Sahara? Was there more contact with littl-known African empires than we know? There is the remains of a Carthaginian/Phoenician port on the 'West African Bulge', tantalisingly just where the current sweeps to Mexico.
And what happened to those dark frizzy people? The Irish also had their Tuatha Dé Danaan, a similar name to Dana[w]os, but these are mostly the Sidhe, probably confused with spirits of the dead. Yet as well as the traditional tall red-haired Celt, there are small dark people sometimes thought to be the origin of English fairy folk hidden in the forests and underground (and exploiting superstition for all it gained them of course) in south Wales and Ireland and Brittany. Perhaps after centuries of mixture with other outcasts, only a general dark tendency remained?

There are no minorities in Nova Roma as we are all citizens with equal

Subject: Re: [Nova-Roma] Dance in Rome
From: PADRUIGTHEUNCLE@aol.com

According to many of the Greek and Roman writers of the day, there were many
kinds of dancing in the ancient world. During the Panatheniad in Athens, men
performed a military dance with helmets, shields, and spears called the
Pyrrhi. The men and women of Pontus and Armenia performed a dance in
concentric circles (up to seven but usually three) that used elaborate hand
and arm gestures but no description of the steps. The Gauls were noted to do
dances requiring elaborate foot movements and leaping but they kept their
hands to their sides (a la Riverdance). The Celti-Iberians (per Livy)
performed a dance that were similar to medieval circle dances. The greatest
problem with recreating such dances are interpreting the descriptions, the
artistic evidence, and the music.

Vale.
