Salvete novoromani!

I am a 15 year old boy from Brazil and I just love Nova Roman ideas. So, I
entered on this email list to learn more about it. I am trying to convince
my parents to allow me to be a Nova Roman citizen (once I am not yet 18, I
have to have their authorization, right?) and while I don't get my
citizenship, I'll learn as much as I can by sharing experiences with all you
novoromani.
I am also working with Imperium of Lucius Arminius Faustus on the
translation of the main site into Portuguese and soonly you all will can see
published there some of my works.
If someone would like to talk to me, can either send me emails to
tggenialis@yahoo.com.br or add me to your ICQ list (my number is 75873373).

That would be me. It's not surprising that you found it difficult; the
attribution in that message was badly mixed up.

That is, perhaps, somewhat dramatic. It's not possible to throw
furniture, raise your voice beyond ONE NOTCH HIGHER, stomp your feet, or
commit violence here - all of which happens during domestic disputes.
We are limited to an exchange of ideas and opinions, to communicating
with others who *voluntarily* receive and read our messages... and have
a "Delete" key at their disposal. I fail to see any parallel to a
domestic dispute.

I think you're conflating personal hospitality and forum behavior, in my
opinion two completely unrelated issues.

I disagree, and not only on the grounds of "what 'everyone' knows is
usually wrong". People, in my experience, treat you the way you teach
them to treat you. You always have the option of not associating with
those who do not respect your wishes (yes, there _are_ limit cases, but
this is neither a jail nor a court of inquiry.)

> To me, it is no wonder at all, that some people decline

I don't wish to sound peremptory, but what do you suggest? It's
trivially easy for anyone to find fault, and I don't believe that anyone
is insisting that the Main List is the best of all possible worlds. It
*is*, however, a discussion forum in which free individuals handle
issues that tend to be emotionally loaded. In my opinion, anyone who
expects this kind of a group to be always rational, stately, calm, or
"nice" is naive, unrealistic, and lacking in experience and/or relevant
information. Looking at a description of the Roman Senate, the early
days of the US Congress, or any body of passionate people with decision
power and substantial problems to solve would (hopefully) give them a
clue and a strong sense of appreciation for the relative calm and
rational demeanor that we enjoy by comparison.

Call me picky, but I would _prefer_ that anyone with that childish of an
idea of how adults communicate emotional issues declined to join
NovaRoma.

Hail Nova Roma
Horatia Minucia Caesar I do understand where your coming from.I'm going though the same thing, with 4 kids.It should be the thought that counts and when you can give I'm sure you will. The people in the place that could part with some or all is the ones that should step up to the plate.Let there names be put on a plack or add a list on the main web site thanking them. This is how some places get there money.I'm not looking for props to make me fill good ,but rather a good push for others to make the stand for our new home land. When you go to Hollywood and see the actors names on the street doesn't that make you wish it was you down there, so your kids could one day say "thats my dad/mom on that one!"

Forgive me if this has already been addressed but something we should
look at is getting a tax deduction number something like the charity
and other non- profit organizations do. In this way people who could,
would be more likely to donate something like the 1000.00 mentioned.
The only problem I see is that Nova Roma is incorporated and based
out of the good old USA. Unfortunately, Revenue Canada (like your
IRS) rules that any donations to charities or non - profit
organizations are only detuctable to those that are based or work
within Canada. This could be the same situation with the Europeans. I
learned that the hard way when I donated 1000.00 to a charity in
India. If I rememember correctly, the Senate talking about having NR
registred in different states and countries. Any comments or thoughts
on this?

Hail Nova Roma

I do belive it's time to put up or shut up!We have been chasing our tail for sometime about the land and where have we gotten not alot from 4 months ago.It would help to know whom we should send the check to?Like I've said before make it so people want to give.By puting there names in the streets and leting them see how thy've help they're more likly to help.I would like to make the line in the sand! I'll send in the 500$us to help and the other 500 later.

Let this be where we start, who will stand with me on this????[please don't tell the wife about it Ok]Hey It's the only way I could do it...But really lets start it now making things to sale is nice but we're not going to get the money faster like that.A tax could help but who wants to live in another world that taxes the hell out of you. That's the way to kill NR not help her.to make a statement like this would be easy.Just when we're building NR place a name on each stone, not to hard!I'd love to show my little guys where I helped.

Nova Roma Is our nation not someone else's but ours so show up for your nation don't let our kids pave the roads we should have.If for some reason it fails then at least we could say we tryed and thats good for me.

Now wRomawe've got the money we must find a spot to start. If we chose the US you've got job around here, nice running water and freedoms. We should take in to thought all countrys and whertryedt of us live. There seems to be alot in the new england states, and land south of there is cheeper.I've looked around for alot of land and its easy to find.SO here is a start give the people a dream let it turn in there minds. If you could build a nation what would you put in it where would you like to see it and would you want to move there?Let ?'s like this be asked in NR so to start the old wheels a turning in our minds.Maybe Just maybe you'll see more people giving and hoping for a better way of life.Lets pray they might see this and a fire brust out inside each of us!

Because if we don't do something about getting to it then we might as wh go back to our game boards and toys and just keep playing.Talking about it is nice but it doesn't get the job done. All the posting have had some good points and it keeps the idea alive, but are you happy just to have an idea?Put your money where your mouth is and we'll have our home land in no time.

G.Porticus Brutis

If I've made you mad with this letter please forgive me thats not what I want to do, but the job won't get done making everbody feel all nice in side!

I know it's kind of late for a reply but I wanted to put mine and my family's qualifications down.My family and I have just a few but nothing in line with Roman history.Ours is more construction of homes, buildings, ponds, lakes, etc.,but I've started a film production comp.Hoping to get that off the ground this year.My wife is going though school for med. and this would be good for NR.We have doctors, lawyers, farmers and bull riders...just about everything in the family. When there's a chance to build on NR land we hope to help. Also If there is anyone who may want to write a script and could help me out I'd love the help.Just to hard to type all of it with just two fingers.

I don't have any qualifications in such matters, but I have just read
about six books on Roman town planning, so until I forget it all I
know quite a lot about the rituals involved. But not the more
mundane things such as how to build the structures one has laid out!

In terms of occupation, I'm a classics student (as of today!), and
spent the last year preparing for my course, while baking for a local
cafe in order to pay the bills! So if Rome needs recipies for
cookies, flapjacks or muffins, that's the nearest thing I have to a
profession so far!

Salve! Ironically I chose to be completely oblique in the choice of
my cognomen which translates to "white" or "one who wears white".
This sort of irony was common in the names of Blacks living in Europe
in the 14-17th century (e.g. John Blanke). Does anyone know if there
is any record of Black African Slaves in the Roman era bearing the
name of "White"?

Salvete,

I have read with great interest all the posts concerning the
financing of the LandProject. All the proposals will be
studied.
However, I would like to say that grants are not a given!!
Grantors will not give money away just for the sake of it
(especially nowadays...)
Grantors will give money to specific projects that are within
their scope. So we should delimit our project at first and
especially we should set it up in a way that will attract
grantors. The very first tasks will be then:

- Find out who are the grantors.
- Find out what kind of project they are granting and why.
- Adjust our project to this.
- Contact the grantors.

At last, putting the taxes higher will not be an acceptable
solution. We have already experiencing a lot of difficulties to
get the 13 USD per citizen per year. Historically, taxing more
the citizens has been used in extreme situation, when Rome
itself was in great danger. For example, the proscriptions of
Octavius, Antonius and Lepidus were held to fight the army
of Cassius and Brutus and because all the means to get
money had been used before.

I don't wish to take issue with the point Scipio is making using this analogy, but I'd like to suggest that the analogy itself is perhaps a little extreme: the triumvirs' proscriptions involved not merely raising the level of tax on citizens, but rather, the drawing up of an extremely long list of citizens who any member of the public was permitted to murder without fear of punishment, and whose lands and money would then be confiscated by the state to fund the war against Brutus and Cassius. I'm sure even those members of this list in favour of a rise in taxes wouldn't wish to suggest a programme of that kind. :)

It strikes me that Brutis' action is in fact a very Roman way of approaching the problem of financing public works. In the same way that the Roman aristocracy competed for political office, they competed for recognition and status by striving to outdo one another by paying out of their own pockets for public works, particularly public buildings but also roads, aqueducts and other amenities, which would of course bear inscriptions recording their generosity. Naturally, since Nova Roma currently has little need for public buildings, and since the private funds of the average citizen are rather smaller than those at the disposal of those ancient benefactors, the simple donation of money is a fairly good approximation. It would be best, however, to be careful that competitive donation doesn't become confused with competition for esteem and for political office, as it did with the ancient Romans, or else running for office could easily become rather similar to buying it. It's worth remembering that when running for office in ancient Rome, candidates stood in the Forum showing not the buildings they had erected for the good of the people, but the wounds they had received defending the res publica - financial benefaction was not the most important form of service.

I've finished putting up a few polls on my website (http://www.angelfire.com/empire/picturesofthepast), if anyone wants to check some of them out. Also, for those of you whose names are used, if you wish your name to be removed, just drop me a line, and I'll be happy to comply.

Your point is a good one. I should have said that the Triumvirs
did raise the tax rate before the prescriptions.
This rate, if I recall properly, was then raised from 0.1 % to
0.3%.
And of course, we will not use any prescription to fimance
our project ;o)

Salve Scipio,

The only down side is that you won't be my 'brother' anymore. In any case,
I'm sure that if we check the genealogies very very carefully, we'll find
that Gentes Moravia & Apollonia are distantly related ;-)

And of course another thank you goes to my former Paterfamilias Tiberius
Apollonius Cicatrix for his support. And now I'll have some work to do in
order to get Gens Moravia once more as an active Gens in Nova Roma!

Vale,
Diana Moravia Aventina

Origin, yes but someone from Africa could be anything. That may be the key: Rome came last of the ancient Empires. The Mediterranean was thoroughly mixed already. 'Barbarian' describes culture. We do not hear of Iugurtha or Iuba as 'Barbarians'. There were occasional Brahman embassies in Rome, Egypt had had occasional Sudanese Pharoahs. Skin colour and features were probably little more significant than hair colour and far less so than social class and education.
