It's not whether *you* find any significance; it's whether the author did! If it means anything at all, it can't have been too difficult at the time. There is a rarer alternative of 616 but that doesn't shed any extra light in either number system. I'm very sceptical about the attribution to Nero. It seems to require adding the N for Greek which is OK as the writing is Greeek, but then approximating in Hebrew characters and that is not OK since it's too easy to find some combination to fit (though I rarely can!). The only text I've seen gives Khi Xi Stau. I suppose that could be initialese but the best obvious bet I can think of is Christ wooden cross which is no great revelation in the context! I don't know when this letter Stau for Digamma came about or if it existed in ancient times.
An interesting exercise when it comes to finding portentious mystic utterances is to try making sense of the more sensational scandal press of several years ago. It is full of enough contemporary references and forgotten nicknames and incidents to repackage into mediaeval French and keep the Nostradamus fraternity happy for years finding what isn't there!

Gaius,

I believe you are completely right! Also, as a side note for
everyone, I will actually be named Publius Tarquitius Rufus, as I
have found a Pater who has accepted me unofficially into his
family...last night actually! :-) And fortunately for me, my pater
has invited my fiancee and I to dinner tomorrow!

THIS is the kind of activity we need! SOCIAL interaction! I
encourage everyone to try tofigure out how we can create more items
that we can sell to the academic and re-enactment communities, to
grow financially. Socially, I hope to begin orginization of a
Christmas dinner for the southeast/georgia in Rome, if we can pull
it together. Once we can get organized, I shall post an invitation
to everyone to come, and see how many we can get here!

Subject: [Nova-Roma] What about Nova Roma "colleges"?
From: "William Rogers" <wlr107@yahoo.com>
Date: Mon, 21 Oct 2002 15:25:52 -0000

Friend Romans,

As I was reading the post of Tullia Sentia Silvana, I had a thought
I wished to pass to the group!

We have some VERY knowledgeable people in differing fields of
knowledge on the Ancient Romans! Would there be anyone out there who
would be willing to (at a later time, around late 2003 or early
2004) begin to create a series of "college classes" that we could
sign up for, pay a small fee, and thenbe taught varying aspects of
the Roman and his life? SOme classes I can think of right off the
top of my head are:

1. Roman history: a. Founding
b. Kings
c. early republic
d. middle republic
e. late republic/early empire
f. classes per 100 ot 200 years of the empire
until the empire's downfall.

2. Roman clothing: a. Daily clothing
1. What was worn, and how
2. How was the material made?
b. family customs
c. cooking
d. furnishing the Roman home

3. Roman Arch. a. Ancient design
b. "Modern" design - what can we do to make a
building "Roman" today

4. Roman Military a. Legion composition/daily operations
b. Combat tactics
c. Legionary initial combat training/ physical
fitness
d. Legion supply
e. Legion combat tactics
f. Command advance training

5. Roman Government: a. Ancient Roman Law
1. Nova Roman Law
b. Ancient Roman Government
1. Nova Roman Rovernment
c. Roman Class system

(***I would recommend that the Roman Government classes would be
required to hold ANY governmential or military command post above
the city or providence level. All Prior and current offixers should
be required to take these classes first)

Fellow Citizens (well, I hope to be a citizen soon), These are
just an initial concept. We would need written class outlines,
bibliographies (I KNOW I misspelled that word...), weekly papers or
tests, I think at least two actual papers, and a final paper or
final exam for each class. The class fees would be used to
compensate the state for offering the classes, and the instructor
who provides the classes.
Initially, all classes would be online, I'm sure. But hopefully
in time we could offer "real world" lectures.

Just a thought....please feel free to send feedback!

Tullia Sentia Silvana,

If you are interested in Roman daily life and Roman food, I HIGHLY
recommend contacting Caius Tarquitius Saturninus. I had the honor of
speaking to him "live" last night, and he has OVER 550 reciepes of
Roman dishes! :-)

Maybe we could get him to publish us a cookbood we could purchase! I
have always found frescoes beautiful, and most difficult. I would
love to learn how they did it...oh! I just had an idea....read the
board! :-) (TRhanks for the awesome idea!)

I have been reading the boards here just around a week. There are
some truly brilliant people here, and I'm POSITIVE you will find a
wonderful friend (or several) here!

Vale,

Publius Tarquitius Rufus

I don't think the Announcement of the Text File 'worked' :)

A few of you who are new to Nova Roma have questions about Sodalitas,
Academics, etc. and there are such within Nova Roma, along with some
interesting discussion groups. A few of you have also expressed
interest in getting more involved, which is great.

Please visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Nova-Roma files/ and you
will see a text there which is a basic welcome and brief orientation
for new citizens. I have it set to mail with each new subscription

It contains the URLs for the major groups, some information on the

A bit longer than the average letter of welcome either privately or

Salvete Cives Novae Romae,

Seeing as people are introducing themselves I thought I would too. I'm
new
basically. Have been a member of NR for a few days only. I am primarily
interested in Roman religion (State, Domestic and Mystery Cults) and
Roman
art (frescoes and mosaics especially). I'm also interested in Roman food
but
don't really know that much about it - all I've read is Trimalchio's
Feast.
And at the expense of being ostracised :-? ...I'm also interested in
magic.

Valete,
Tullia Sentia Silvana.

Salvete Quirites!

I live in Los Angeles, Calif, and was born and raised out here. But my late
mother was born and raised in Rome, Georgia (1924) and she told me, among
many curious and possibly apocryphal tales, that around the turn of the
century Rome, Italy sent statues of the Lupa with the feeding twins to all
her sister cities in the U.S. The rural small-town government of Rome, GA
apparently sent a nice thank-you note and promptly put the vaguely obscene
statue in storage. Perhaps someone in this or another U.S. Rome could
confirm or deny the statuary ...

Valete!

Perhaps they'd be willing to sell the statue to the local chapter of Nova
Roma, to be used in the local meetings. Has anyone else ever heard anything
about this?

Well, I just did a teensy bit of research. Even if they had the statue "put
away" at the turn of the century, its currently displayed at the Entrance to
their city hall. Oh well.

Avete Omnes,

The Academy is not a College. None of the people who teach there are professionals or academics. Maybe one day in the future that can be included. But at the current juncture the better place to learn about the ancients is from an accredited college.

Friend Romans,

As I was reading the post of Tullia Sentia Silvana, I had a thought
I wished to pass to the group!

We have some VERY knowledgeable people in differing fields of
knowledge on the Ancient Romans! Would there be anyone out there who
would be willing to (at a later time, around late 2003 or early
2004) begin to create a series of "college classes" that we could
sign up for, pay a small fee, and thenbe taught varying aspects of
the Roman and his life? SOme classes I can think of right off the
top of my head are:

1. Roman history: a. Founding
b. Kings
c. early republic
d. middle republic
e. late republic/early empire
f. classes per 100 ot 200 years of the empire
until the empire's downfall.

2. Roman clothing: a. Daily clothing
1. What was worn, and how
2. How was the material made?
b. family customs
c. cooking
d. furnishing the Roman home

3. Roman Arch. a. Ancient design
b. "Modern" design - what can we do to make a
building "Roman" today

4. Roman Military a. Legion composition/daily operations
b. Combat tactics
c. Legionary initial combat training/ physical
fitness
d. Legion supply
e. Legion combat tactics
f. Command advance training

5. Roman Government: a. Ancient Roman Law
1. Nova Roman Law
b. Ancient Roman Government
1. Nova Roman Rovernment
c. Roman Class system

(***I would recommend that the Roman Government classes would be
required to hold ANY governmential or military command post above
the city or providence level. All Prior and current offixers should
be required to take these classes first)

Fellow Citizens (well, I hope to be a citizen soon), These are
just an initial concept. We would need written class outlines,
bibliographies (I KNOW I misspelled that word...), weekly papers or
tests, I think at least two actual papers, and a final paper or
final exam for each class. The class fees would be used to
compensate the state for offering the classes, and the instructor
who provides the classes.
Initially, all classes would be online, I'm sure. But hopefully
in time we could offer "real world" lectures.

Just a thought....please feel free to send feedback!
