Subject: [Nova-Roma] We DO still have a Chatroom
From: "deciusiunius" <bcatfd@together.net>
Date: Sun, 24 Nov 2002 03:58:00 -0000

Salvete,

In all these shots being fired back and forth about the old Taverna
(the old chatroom), the Back Alley, etc, something is being
overlooked. We do have a working Nova Roma chatroom, just go to the
Forum Romanum page and you will see the link to it. (the URL is
http://novaroma.org/bin/chat/chat . It is rarely used anymore
unfortunately, perhaps because of previous problems mentioned here. I
have had the page minimized tonight for an hour and no one else made
an appearance. I encourage you all to make use of it; do not let old
troubles prevent Nova Romans from speaking to each other through this
medium.

Valete,

Decius Iunius Palladius,
Senator Consularis

I've been there in the past, and in fact just now brought up a
window to it. (You seem to have logged out, alas.)

I think the biggest problem I've had with the chatroom in the past
has been the asynchronous nature of our worldwide communications.
We're in so many different timezones that it's hard for people
to synchronize their visits. The other problem I've seen in the
past has been with the chat support software, which hasn't always
worked well.

But if someone would like to try for more realtime communication,
I'd be happy to drop by.

Indeed that presents a challenge, but not necessarily an
insurmountable one. I have always enjoyed the times I've gone to the
chatroom for a Market-Day chat, and the other cives (and prospective
cives) who have dropped in have been most enjoyable.

Market-day chats have worked out relatively well (and they're often
scheduled a couple of times during the day), but we need to do a
better job of promoting when they'll be here on the main list. It's
sort of been "everyone's and no-one's" job to promote the market-day
chats, but if we could develop a consistent routine for reminding
cives when they are held, I suspect the attendance would improve over
time... it just takes developing the habit!

Historicly the Aediles oversaw Roma's markets, so I
nominate the Aediles for the task of promoting the
chatroom.

There is something to that. At one time though one could go in the
chatroom and it was a safe bet someone would be there almost at any
time of day. Generally the North Americans and Europeans would be
there at different times but that also increased the likelihood that
someone would usually be there. At certain times of day it was quite
busy because there was an overlap between the two. Now we have many
more citizens but less communication between them, whether realtime
or through the lists.

> But if someone would like to try for more realtime communication,
> I'd be happy to drop by.

Unfortunately I missed you but we can try again another day. I think
another reason for the disuse of the chatroom is that you can see who
is in there already before you login. Many times I think people go to
the page, see no one is there and don't bother to login. I've done it
myself sometimes. No one wants to be there by himself generally
unless you know someone is coming. Now I try to login anyway and
leave the page open to see if someone will show up. Once in awhile
someone does.

Thank you for your kind words, Jamie. I hope that we all manage to

The nomination having been seconded...

Sure, I'll take this on as a market day (and other day) effort.
(My three aedelian colleagues are welcome to join in too.)

The next Market Day is next Saturday, the 30th of November. I'll
post a separate message, and then ask the Praetors to set up a
repeating message announcing the market day chats. (Since they're
the list moderators and have access to that functionality.)

Thank you for the suggestion Drusus, and for the seconding of it

The next market day is Saturday the 30th of November. All interested

throughout that day.

Of course, nothing says you can't go there at any other time too.

I see the results of the balloting have been posted. Congratulations
to all who have won, especially my Curule Aedilean running mate
Franciscus Apulus Caesar. We split it just the way we had hoped to
split it, with him taking just one more tribe so he'll be the Senior
Curule Aedile next year.

My sincere thanks to all who offered themselves for next year's
magistracies. Not everyone can win, I know. But I also know the
commitment it takes to don the toga candida and step forward.

Some positions have yet to be filled, and I hope that all will vote as
carefully in these upcoming runoff elections.

2756 a.u.c. is shaping up to be a *very* good year.

Subject: [Nova-Roma] Myths about the Ancients
From: "Gaius Basilicatus Agricola" <jlasalle@kc.rr.com>
Date: Sun, 24 Nov 2002 10:10:16 -0600
Anybody have any favourite myths they like to tell about the ancients?
For example, its widely believed that Greek Olympians never received payment for winning. In fact, if you won at the Olympics, you received either 500 bushels of grain or giant olive amphorae, qualifying yourself as a "pentacostadesmonoi"(sp?) or a "five hundred bushel man". In Athens that meant you were responsible for outfitting a bireme in time of war. A far cry from a simple wreath of laurels. The lack of money incentives in modern olympic competition is a result of rich folks who wished to exclude poorer, but better, atheletes from competition, knowing they couldn't afford to play for free. Which backfired in the first modern Olympics, when America sent no team, but a bunch of American college drunks paid their own way, got wasted the night before the games, and then swept almost every event for the gold!

To everyone who voted for me, and to those who offered good wishes both
publicly and privately, I offer a hearty thank you. Your support is
appreciated. I shall endeavor to live up to your expectations, and I
look forward to working with the inestimable Caeso Fabius while doing so.

I give an equally hearty thank you to everyone who didn't vote for me.
There were no bad choices on this year's ballot, and it would have been
no dishonor to have come in third place to the two Fabii.

I also thank Quintus Fabius for running a clean race that focused upon
issues and the future of the Res Publica, rather than personalities and
mudslinging. And, I thank him for continuing his service to Nova Roma
by providing the people with a choice. It's heartening to see more and
more elections which are contested.

Speaking of those contests, congratulations to all of next year's
magistrates!

Finally, don't forget that the elections aren't quite over! Remember to
vote in the run-off for praetor.

To All Citizens of NovaRoma:

I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all who supported my candidacy
for Rogator. I was gratified to receive as many votes as I did,
considering that I have maintained a rather low profile within the
NovaRoman community.

I pledge to serve with honor and integrity to assure an accurate
and proper election.

Thanking you for your confidence in electing me as a Rogator,

I manere in Viresium et Honorare
I remain in Strength and Honor

I forgot to say they are going to have four teams and they
are the same as our Factions here in Nova Roma. You can
pick your Faction(i.e. team) on the site.

Better than that, Athens entitled you to free dinner on the State for life. I don't know how often or if it was maybe one big banquet a year or something though.

Salve,

I'd like to thank all Nova Romans who took the time to vote in this
election regardless for whom you cast your ballot. As rogator-elect
I look forward to serving Nova Roma in the coming year as well as
looking forward to working with Renata Corva Cantrix, Aulus Hirtius
Helveticus, and Gallio Velius Marsallas. I ask only one thing of
Nova Romans, please make our jobs tedious with high voter turnouts in
the coming year.

Salve,

I certainly hope and pray for your son's speedy recovery and quickly
discovering the source of his allergic reaction. I know it pales
compared to the safety and well being of your family, but please
accept my congartulations on your electorial victory.

Vale,

Q. Cassius Calvus

Subject: [Nova-Roma] Various short messages
From: "A.Apollonius Cordus" <cordus@dygo.com>

Greetings all,

I've got various little things to say, so I thought I'd put them all in one message rather than clog up your in-boxes.

First: Hello, this is my first post using this e-mail address and indeed this name, because today I've become a citizen. I used to post from 'jamiekjohnston@ etc. etc.', and sign my messages 'Jamie'. I'm proud to say I'm no longer a resident alien but a citizen, and an Apollonius at that! I'd like to extend my thanks to the Censors, to Ti. Apollonius Cicatrix and Sex. Apollonius Scipio, and to M. Minucius Audens, Caeso Fabius Quintilianus and C. Fabia Livia for their help with this transfiguration.

Second: My hopes and best wishes to Apollonius Scipio and his family.

Third: Congratulations to all who were elected, commiserations to those who weren't, and good luck to those who are still waiting. Unfortunately I didn't get to vote, being not yet a citizen, and so I think it's only fair that I don't vote in the run-off elections either, but I look forward to seeing our new magistrates put their ideas into action.

Fourth: I think I may have come across rather brusquely in recent posts on the under-age-citizens debate, for which I apologize. I am genuinely interested in understanding the problem and helping to solve it, not simply in using it as material for rhetorical exercises (I'm sure many of us know how easy it is to slip absent-mindedly into this second mode).

Finally: I'm in the chat-room now, if anyone who was making noises about its under-use earlier is still awake!

Cordus

Salve Honorable Aulus Apollonius Cordus!

It is a pleasure to at last see You as a citizen. It is also good to
know that no longer is a non-citizen more active on the Nova Roma
main list than most citizens. Still I expect You to keep up the good
work and see to it that never again a non-citizen is the most active
mailer to this list. ;-)

On the other hand I could be wrong and we should wish to see more
non-citizens post as much as You have done. But, only of course if
it, as it did in your case, leads them to citizenship! ;-)
