Subject: [Nova-Roma] Edictum Aedilicium XVII about the appointment of four Domini
From: Caeso Fabius Quintilianus <christer.edling@telia.com>
Date: Thu, 28 Nov 2002 10:24:22 +0100
Ex Officio Curile Aedile Caeso Fabius Q.

Edictum Aedilicium XVII about the appointment of four Domini
Factionum for 2756 A.U.C.

During my term as Senior Curule Aedile my Cohors Aedilis have
developed the four historical organizations (teams) in the Ludi
Circenses that are called Factiones after the ancient ones: Russata,
Praesina, Veneta and Albata. We have now found that it would be good
to keep the position of Dominus Factionis (Team leader) for each of
these.

I. Each Factio shall have a Dominus Factionis. The Dominus Factionis
will have the following tasks:
I.I. To manage the advertising of his/her Factio on the Nova Roma
main list (novaroma@yahoogroups.com) and use the web page of the
Factio (a page on the Cohors Aedilis (Caeso Fabius Q.) web-site or a
web-site of their own organized by the Factio itself as agreed with
the next years Senior Curule Aedile and his Cohors.
I.II To enlist new Chariot-owners (members) for his/her Factio
I.III. To organize chats, meetings and everything needed to improve
the activities in his/her Factio.
I.IV. To keep the spirit of the Ludi Circenses alive until the end of 2756.
I.V. To be the chief and foremost representative of his Factio
behaving with proper Romanitas, supervised by the Senior Curule Aedile

II. The Dominus Factionis for each Factio will be elected among the
citizens who been competing for that Factio during 2755. The election
will be organised through each citizen and member of a certain Factio
sending _one_ vote to Illustrus Franciscus Apulus Caesar who adds the
votes for each Factio, the candidates with the most votes will be
elected that Factio's Dominus Factionis.

III. Each candidate will have to announce their candidacy for the
position of Dominus Factionis for their Factio on the Nova Roma main
list (novaroma@yahoogroups.com) to become the Dominus Factionis for
the Factio that they have competed for during the Ludi Circenses of
2755.

IV. The following citizens, in order of precedence and called
reserves, will automatically be appointed Dominus Factionis based on
their standing (points) within their Factio if no other candidates
announce themselves for election.

ALBATA
1) Marcus Octavius Solaris - 6 points
2) Marcus Octavius Germanicus - 4 pts

RUSSATA:
1) Tiberius Arminius Hyacinthus - 14 pts
2) M. Minicius Rufus - 12 pts

VENETA:
1) Lucius Pompeius Octavianus - 6 pts
2) G. Cornelius Ahenobarbus - 6 pts

PRAESINA:
1) Manius Constantinus Serapio - 20 pts
2) Caius Curius Saturninus - 17 pts

Otherwise one of these eight candidates will be treated as candidates
that have announced themselves publicly on the Nova Roma main list,
each for his Factio. If no one is elected as Dominus Factionis for a
certain Factio, the member of that Factio with most points (listed
above) gathered for one Factio in the Ludi Circenses during 2755, the
first reserve, will be appointed by the Senior Curule Aedile as the
Dominus Factionum for that Factio. If that citizen will not accept
this position the second reserve will be appointed. If the two
reserves have the same amout of points, The order in which they are
presented in this edictum will decide which one who the first and
second reserv.

V. If no Dominus Factionis for a Factio is elected or no one of the
two reserves acceped the position, the Senior Curule Aedile of 2756
will have to organise new elections or appointments for the needed
Domini Factiones for 2756.

VI: These are the dates for the elections/appointment of the Domini Factiones:
VI.I. Publishinging of this edictum the 28th of November
VI.II. Announcing candidacy 29th - 2nd of December
VI.III. Election by sending votes to Illustrus Franciscus Apulus Caesar
<sacro_barese_impero@libero.it> 3rd of December to the 8th of December
VI.IV. Announcement of elected or appointed Domini, the 11th
of December.

VII. This edictum becomes effective immediately.

Given November the 25th, in the year of the consulship of Marcus
Octavius Germanicus and Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix, 2755 AUC.

Actually there were six historical factions. So what you are saying is you
have settled on four.
There were up to three teams per faction. This was in Byzantine times but
there is no reason to assume that it was not true in Roman times. The track
was wide enough to support it.
I was the first here to organize a chariot race for NR, and I used all six
factions with two teams each for 12 racers.

The two other factiones, the Purpurea and the Aurata, where created
by Domitianus. In addition, after Domitianus' death, these factiones
where removed. So I assume that your "actually" was referred to a
part of Domitianus' life.
Nova Roma recreates the Republic, not the Empire. In addition that 2
new factiones lasted only a few years, therefore they can't be
considered very important, compared to the history of the chariot
races.
The Cohors Aedilis OF Quintilianus recreated the four factiones
recognized by the Romans themselves.

Salvete, All! Especially you who live in Medatlantica!

Please note that there is a NEW address for the provence, which was
made necessary when the whole NR web changed.
Very few (only 20 or so) of our Provincials seem to know this.

I ask that anyone who still has the old addy please erase it and go to
the provence page and get the new one.

So far, I am hoping for citizens to come to an event on Feb.15 in
Piscataway, N.J., which is a Lupercallia celebration in a 2nd CAD
taberna on Hadrian's Wall. Marcus Ambrosius Incendium is trying to pull
together something in N.Y.state, and there's always Roman days,
down in MD.

Also, in March, the U.of PA Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology is
holding a Gala reopening of their Roman Wing, with demos by Legio XX,
Fashion show, etc. (I'm getting a room down there for the weekend).

Avete omnes!

Galaicus: Serapio is right. According to Martialis, the purpurea and
the aurata were created by Domitianus (81-96).
But after his death they were removed, maybe because the romans
didnīt support the new "teams" and both factiones were complicating
the important bet system of the races.
BTW, the green Domitianus hates the Veneta Factio. In his time the
blues had prohibited to win the races before his presence. The blue
drivers "had to restrain" their horses if they were in the first post
of the race :-)

"There were up to three teams per faction. This was in Byzantine
times but there is no reason to assume that it was not true in Roman
times. The track was wide enough to support it."

Galaicus: Yes, the track was wide enough, but the 12 chariots races
werenīt the custom in Rome. At least before Domitianus (81-96) was
impossible, because he was who ordered build the 12 "carceres" (exit
doors) in the Circus Maximus for having two new exit doors for each
new factio, purpurea and aurata. Before Domitianus, in republic and
julian-claudian times there were only 8 doors (two ones for each
factio) and therefore 8 chariots in each race.
When the factiones purpurea and aurata were removed then it were
possible three chariots for each factio because the circus continued
having 12 exit doors. These 12 doors and three chariots for each
factio were copied by the circus of Constantinople.

I was the first here to organize a chariot race for NR, and I used
all six factions with two teams each for 12 racers."

Galaicus: Congratulations for your surely good work, I didnīt know
it.
Itīs curious. The first chariot race of NR was a race of the epoch of
Domitianus. Is it an augury?
