Salvete amici:

First of all sorry for the recent events in Kenya.

I'm a painter and I have a little project in mind. Here, in Uruguay,
my family has many old friends in the little Jewish community, but
unfortunately nobody can help me with certain details. My last chance
is to ask you, with all rispect, if there is any site on the Internet
where I can see pictures or drawings or whatever of the ancient
Jewish garments; to be more precise, the ones used 2000 years ago.
In truth the painting will be a little tribute to the centurio
Cornelius, for me one of the loveliest creatures ever. I'd like to
depict him with the friends he surely had.
The fact is I have never associated Cornelius specifically with
Christianity but with pure friendship between cultures. I think of
him and I think tenderness and absolute beauty (don't know exactly
why). Maybe it's a matter of italic blood: I look at the picture of a
Roman soldier the same way as if it was a picture of a beloved
soldier grandpa, and it's a very strong feeling.

At least there are charming examples of Roman equipment, (ah! the ESG
is the cutest thing! Sorry members of our military sodalitates), but
in this other case I don't have any source and must say that I don't
trust the accuracy of any movie.
And that's it. Thank you very very much!!!

Valete bene.
Valeria Constanina Iuliana.

Salvete,

Since one of the canidates for Tribune resigned his
citizenship and left Nova Roma for a time in part
because of his oppistion to the Gender Name Edict/Lex
I would like to submit a question to all the remaining
canidates.

If you are elected will you promulgate a repeal of the
Gender name Lex or support a repeal if promulgated by
another Tribune?

L. Sicinius Drusus:

I read the edict in the tabularium, at least the one I think you are
referring to, and from what I can see the lex looks reasonable. Granted I
was not present during any debate on the issue, and am unaware of any
loopholes that might be present in the lex. I do, however, see no problem in
requiring male citizens to utilize male Roman names as well as requiring
woman to use female Roman names. Seems reasonable to me.

If I am elected as a Tribune I will excercise the office with the highest
level of justice I can muster. I am not seeking this office to serve a
political agenda, but to serve the Republic. As a rule I prefer NOT to go
and repeal old legislation, but to serve as guardian of the people for future
legislation. I trust the Tribunes in the past did their jobs, and would have
repealed it if necessary. However, I believe that if there is something that
the Tribunes should address then they should do so collectively, and not
individually without any recourse to their fellow Tribunes. I stated in my
initial declaration that I wish to work WITH other magistrates (both
Patrician and Plebeian) to bring forth a better Nova Roma. I see much of the
political in-fighting a result of a clash of egos more than a clash of ideas.

I Am refering to the Lex Cornelia et Maria de Mutandis
Nominibus.
The link to the Lex is
http://www.novaroma.org/tabularium/leges/2001-05-20-ii.html

The debate over this issuse was very devisive, and
caused a lot of ill will within Nova Roma. I think the
voters have a right to know if any canidates intend to
reopen that debate next year.

In case anyone thinks I'm trying to prevent a Lex I
agree with from being reviewed, I opposed it. My
concern now is not the lex itself, but the reopening
of old wounds.

I wish to once again endorse Gaius Modius Athanasius for TRIBUNUS PLEBIS. I have found him to be an honourable and trustworthy citizen who would serve the Republic well.

He is very active in Provincia Lacus Magni, where I am Propraetor. He has helped improve our provincia with his ideas, time and money. I have never known him not to keep his word or not to help out when asked.

I request that you vote for for him in the upcoming election. He will serve with the utmost respect for the office and the people of Nova Roma.

Thank you,

Here is some information from A.T. Croom's book, "Roman Clothing and
Fashion":

Men's costume in ancient Judaea was very similar to that in Greece,
consisting of a tunic and a mantle. The tunic was made of two
rectangles of cloth sewn together, with spaces for the head and arms,
and decorated with two stripes. The mantle was a rectangular piece of
cloth with a tassel at each corner. Unlike Roman men, Jewish men did
not wear hobnails in the soles of their shoes. Men were supposed to
wear only white, but this was not strictly enforced.

Women's outfits were a bit more complicated. Start with an ankle-length
undertunic with wide, elbow-length sleeves, then add a shorter
tube-dress on top, fastened on the left side of the chest. A veil over
the head hangs down to the hips, and the mantle is worn as a kind of
overskirt, with the top folded down and tied or fastened around the
hips. Women could wear any color except red, but always kept their hair
covered when outside.

I hope this helps!
