Salvete,
I was just browsing through eBay, and found a pretty amazing six-foot tall
statue of a Roman Centurian. Pretty reasonably priced for what it is! Check
out:
<A HREF="http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2823203859&category=20151">http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2823203859&category=20151</A>
I'm awfully tempted myself, except that I have no money after travelling to
Rome. And... where would I put it? Figured I'd post it here in case someone
out there has a shop or something! What a great prop for a Roman event...
Valete,
Marcus Cassius Julianus

SALVETE NOVA ROMANI
As we feel responsible for involving the current Ludi in the Religio, the
college feels it is best to give the Magna Mater her promised appeasment.
Therefore as a privitus I have decided to sponsor a munus dedicated to the
Magna Mater.
It will be "sine missione," with the hope that She accepts this contest.
I have contacted two Lanistae to provide fighters.
More details will be forthcoming in the next day.

Sure I can expect MASS participation of the citizens from the

[Nova-Roma] CEREALIA MUNERA - CALLING FOR FIGHTERS! |
From: |

Date: |
Wed, 9 Apr 2003 14:56:57 -0300 (ART) |
|
The crowd gather on the Forum Romanum and see servants of the Aedile Faustus puttin a parchment next the acta diurna announcing on big red letters:
CEREALIA MUNERA IS COMING!
These citizens was the first six to subscribe on the Cerelia Munus. So the office of the Plebeian Aedilship is granting then SPECIAL TICKETS on the amphitheater, on the right next the Senate Chair and magistrates
NOW SEE THE FIGHTERS!
Marius the Lybian, a Samnite from Ambrosius Silvanius Virbius Epolone
Marcus Claudius Seneca (what a BIG name for a gladiator!), a Murmillo from Sextus Cornelius Cota
Poliorcetes, a Essedarius from Marcus Tullius Philippicae, welcome to NR!
Aeternus, a Samnite from Tiberius Appolonius Cicatrix, might Domini Factone, Lord of the Reds!
Robur, a Retiarius from the cunning Interpreter Tiberius Anneus Otho
Zenobia, a Retiarius from the most exalted priestess Patricia Cassia
The people start doing its guess. Some wonder about the fight technique each one will use. Other promises that will join the ludi and go to the hasta searching for a fighter. Others were wondering if the Cerealia would be a bloodlust. The coments starts at the Forum.
- Two retiarius and two samnites on just one day of subcriptions? Hum… promising!
- The essedarius can easily change the balance. I don´t know why the aedil has allowed these kind. They are too fast.
- Velocity is nothing comparing with courage and a good sword.
- But you know, Appolonius Cicatrix is on the games.
- Sure he feels a good fight ahead, oh yes, on the name of Iove.
One citizen, exalted upon the crowd, cries:
- And the THRACIANS? Everyone who knows what a ludus is simply KNOW the Thracians are the best!
- Baff! – says another getting close– I´m with the murmillos. They are pretty well balanced.
- Never, stupid barbarian! When I was a child on Preneste, I saw a fight between a thracian…
- Oh, there is your boring histories….
- It is real!
- Yes, just like the day you saw Venus taking a bath on the Via Appia… you are smoking too much those Serica´s herbs.
- How you dare!
- I dare, because you talk too much.
- Don´t push me!
- You scourge of the Forum!
- Psi, Psi, what is happening here? - a lictor walking has realized the heating of the arguing and spared the angry guys. – Fighting just on emails!
ROMANS, THERE STILL TIME TO JOIN CERELIA MUNERA!
The Servants of the Aediles put on the wall another parchment with the rules of the Gladiatorial Game.
- Another? – said a citizens.
- A revised version – laconicly answered the servant.
- And until when can I subcribe???
- Two days before the ides of april.
- Bloodly? – asked again the citizen.
- Well, you know Aedile Faustus … - said evasively the servant. - … he tells me anything!
- ´Sine Missione´ or ´Stanes Missione´?
The servant smiles and shakes its shoulders a little bit tired.
- I still have much more parchments to put on all urbs.
- You don´t know?
- I gain less than two sestertii per month, do you think I will study that stuff?!! Let me go, If I don´t spare these panflets over the urbs and get more subscriptions, the aedil will put ME to fight against these one!
LUDI CEREALIA
GLADIATOR GAME - RULES
"Our ancestors, O judges, ordained that the sacred rites of Ceres should be performed with the very strictest religious reverence and the greatest solemnity"
M. Tullius Cicero, Pro Flacco
OVERVIEW: For the greater glory of Nova Roma, enlightening of our people, and satisfaction of Mother Ceres, the Cerealia Ludi this year is granting a great Muneria Gladiatoria opened to all citizens.
DATES
14th april – First round
16th april – ‘Surprise’ round. The Aediles will make a secret preparation for this game.
The Aediles keep the right to add an extra round if necessary until 19th april.
SUBSCRIPTIONS
Until 13th april!!!!!
You must send a email to Aedile L. Arminius Faustus (lafaustus@yahoo.com.br) with the subject: ‘CEREALIA MUNERA’ with the following:
a) Roman Name
b) Province
c) Gladiator Name (please, choose new gladiators for this game! And don´t get so involved with them, he may not survive)
d) Type of Gladiator (Retiarius, Murmillo, Samnite, Thracian, Essedarius) – This will gaive a automatically natural technique to fight.
e) Fighting Chosen Technique (Aggressive, Defensive and Evasive) – the roman player must keep strict secret the way he addressed to its fighter and it will have bonus depending on the adversary. See the rules below.
“This fault appears not only in the matter of buildings, but also in the shows given by magistrates, whether of gladiators in the forum or of plays on the stage. Here neither delay nor postponement is permissible, but the necessities of the case require that everything should be ready at a fixed time,--the seats for the audience, the awning drawn over them, and whatever, in accordance with the customs of the stage, is provided by machinery to please the eye of the people. These matters require careful thought and planning by a well trained intellect; for none of them can be accomplished without machinery, and without hard study skilfully applied in various ways.”
Vitruvius Pollio, The Ten Books on Architecture
WINNERS
The winner will gain a spectacular reward and glory on a virtual monument on the Aediles Site.
GLADIATOR FIGHT - RULES
Many thanks to G. Galerius Peregrinator and P. Tarquitius Rufus.
I - Types of Gladiators
a) Retiarius: fast gladiator, almost naked, armed with a web and a
trident.
b) Murmillo : very common kind of gladiator, wore a helmet with
the form of a fish and a leather hood, galerum. He uses a heavy sword and a shield.
c) Samnite : carried a sword and shield. The samnite is dressed
like the ancient Samnite warriors defeated by Rome.
d) Thracian : very popular gladiator. Carried a round buckler
and a dagger.
e) Essedarius (chariot-fighter) : the essedarius comes in a bigae
and throws spears.
“By far the greatest sight in the procession was the captured armour, and so magnificent were the pieces considered that the gilded shields were distributed amongst the owners of the silversmiths' shops to adorn the Forum. This is said to be the origin of the custom of the aediles decorating the Forum when the symbols of three Capitoline deities are conducted in procession through the City on the occasion of the Great Games. Whilst the Romans made use of this armour to honour the gods, the Campanians, out of contempt and hatred towards the Samnites, made the gladiators who performed at their banquets wear it, and they then called them `Samnites.'”
Livy, History of Rome, BOOK IX: B.C. 321-304: THE SECOND SAMNITE WAR
II - FIGHTING TECHNIQUES:
a) AGRESSIVE FIGHT : this technique relies on heavy and violent
attacks caring little with defence.
b) EVASIVE FIGHT : this technique relies on speed, constant
escaping, and hit and run.
c) DEFENSIVE FIGHT : this technique relies on defence with
shield to block attacks. The fighter is very defensive, cautious, and fights with precision.
G. Suetonius Tranquillus, De Vita Caesarum - LIBER I: DIVVS IVLIVS
III - BONUS:
This rule is like the scissor-paper-stone game, and depending on the manner of fighting the fighter gets a bonus.
a) AGRESSIVE has bonus over DEFENSIVE: the defensive fighter cannot stand all the blows from an agressive fighter
b) DEFENSIVE has bonus over EVASIVE: the defensive fighter is less effective than the aggressive and evasive, but his studied attacks can pick the evasive fighter in mid movement.
c) EVASIVE has bonus over AGRESSIVE: the agressive fighter who attacks all the time is open to hits from a fast evasive fighter.
IV - NATURAL TECHNIQUE AND CHOSEN TECHNIQUE:
The Murmillo and The Thracian are AGRESSIVE.
The Retiarius and The Essedarius are EVASIVE.
The Samnite is DEFENSIVE.
A fighter can choose a different technique for fighting to trap the adversary, and he is free to choose and his choice is kept secret. The natural technique and the chosen technique will be added up for bonus score.
V - THE WOUND RULE
A ´round´ of fight would start by throwing a dice for each player, then bonus is added. The higher value corresponds to the size of wound inflicted.
The fighter who is wounded three times falls. If the difference between total wounds is just one, the public gives mercy to the fallen warrior or thumbs down (or up).

[Nova-Roma] New Nova Roman Citizen Introduction |

Hi everyone,
I just wanted to introduce myself to the members of the list, as
a new Nova Roman citizen (the censors have recently sent confirmation
of acceptance of my citizenship application.
I applied under the name of Lucius Aeneas Apollonius
Constantius, however, I am in the process of changing my gens and
name to Lucius Quintius Constantius (pending the approval of the
paterfamilias of gens Aenea Apollonia).
I have always been fascinated by Roman history, and have done
some undergraduate work in history (though I have not finished my
degree). I have to confess that I am more interested in the
political and legal aspects of the Roman Republic than in the
religious aspects. I did take one year of Latin in high school, but
I am in desperate need of a refresher course.
I look forward to working in Nova Roma with you all, and working
with in the various comitia(e?). I love the idea of a restoration of
the ancient forms of the Roman Republic.
Lucius Aeneas Apollonius Constantius (soon to be Lucius Quintius
Constantius) of Lacus Magni

Subject: Re: Games and the ML
Salve Paulinus,
the controvery is not so easy to explain. I'll try to do it with few
words.
Some days ago I and my Cohors organizing the Megalesia Ludi, sended
a will declaration...
<SNIP>
Someone, like Illustris Fabius Maximus, Cornelius Sulla,
Cincinnatus, attacked us about in a chronological order:
<SNIP>
Lucius Equitius: I didn't "attack" anyone. I requested the proper
magistrates veto the
"MEGALESIA LUDI: Joint Declaration II"
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Nova-Roma/message/9328
"Pontifex Lucius Equitius Cincinnatus Augur Omnibus Quiritibus SPD
I call upon the Consules, Praetores, Aediles Curules to veto the "MEGALESIA
LUDI: Joint Declaration II" in it's present form which expresses political
sentiments at the expense of the game's real intent. The Ludi are to please
the Gods, not men.
Let the call for the games (Ludi) be reissued in a more appropriate manner."
So, where is the Attack? There is none. Try being honest.
Fr, APulus:
- we are impious because we have corrupted the religio with
political statements (but Cincinnatus said "religion is political")
etc etc. [words words words]
Lucius Equitius: Excuse me, but you quote me incorrectly. I wrote, ""BTW
Though Nova Roma is not a 'theocracy', religious positions are political!
The Religio is part of the State! Go back and read the Constitution and
related documents"
Try being honest.
Religious *POSITIONS* are political. The Religio is part of the state, Read
the Constitution.
Also, just to be more clear. Magistries are *not* religious positions but
those who hold magistries must abide the Constitution in regard the Religio.
"A. The Religio Romana, the worship of the Gods and Goddesses of Rome, shall
be the official religion of Nova Roma. All magistrates and Senators, as
officers of the State, shall be required to publically show respect for the
Religio Romana and the Gods and Goddesses that made Rome great. Magistrates,
Senators, and citizens need not be practitioners of the Religio Romana, but
may not engage in any activity that intentionally blasphemes or defames the
Gods, the Religio Romana, or its practitioners."
Fr, APulus:
Keep attecntion, the words netween parenthesis are my opinions and
defences.
At the end, several Magistrates are disagreeing with this gentlemen
like several Nova Romans. However we're waiting the answer of the
Collegium of Pontiffs.
Lucius Equitius: You've already heard from the Pontifex Maximus and other
Pontificies. Some of the members for the college are unavailable at times.
What more do you want? Try being honest.
You've named Pontifex Q Fabius, L Cornelius and me as "attackers", then you
claim "several Magistrates" and "several Nova Romans" who disagree. In fact
there have been other magistrates who have either renounced your 'Joint
Declaration II' or have said it was wrong, a mistake etc.
Try being honest.
Fr, APulus:
I leave to Gods and Nova Romans to understand this controversy and
take an own position.
Paulinus, please, enjoy the Megalesia Ludi and not see this sad

[Nova-Roma] 2nd Call for Ludi Cerealia Chariot Races |

Salvete omnes,
Nova Roma is certainly spoiled for Ludi this month. :-) The Ludi
Cerealia begin on 12 April, and Chariot races will be held. We are
now accepting entrants for these races - maybe this is a second
chance for all those who have been knocked out in the Ludi Megalesia!
On 13 April, the first round will be held. The semi-final will take
place on the 15th, and the final on the 17th.
If you wish to enter, please send an e-mail with "Chariot races" in
the subject heading to marcusscribonius@hotmail.com with the
following details:
Your name in Nova Roma,
The name of your driver,
Your tactics for the quarter/semi-finals,
Your tactics for the finals,
Which factio your driver will be racing for. (Blue, Red, Green or
White)
There are six tactics:
To hurry in the last laps,
To pass the curves closely the "spina" of the circus,
To support a constant pace,
To lash the rivals,
To push the rivals to the wall of the circus,
To hurry in the straight lines.
There is also the possibility of sabotaging an opponent's chariot.
You must say what factio you wish to sabotage, and there is a 45%
chance of success. If you fail, your attempt is uncovered, and you
will be banned from the race due to your dishonourable tactics. If
you succeed, one chariot from the specified factio will suffer an
accident. Of course, you will not be identified as the saboteur if
you succeed...
Subscriptions must be sent by the 11th April.
For the honour of your factio, hire a chariot!
Bene valete,
Marcus Scribonius Curio Britannicus,
Plebeian Aedile.

A. Apollonius Cordus to Senator & Consular Q. Fabius

Normally I would not add too all your inboxes merely
to say 'bravo', but since I made no little noise
calling for constructive action from critics of the
desanguination (if I may invent the word) of the
games, it would be churlish of me not to acknowledge
constructive action when it appears.
My thanks and admiration to you, Senator, for your
public-spirited undertaking.

[Nova-Roma] Re: CEREALIA MUNERA - CALLING FOR FIGHTERS! |

Salve,
First, I'd like to publicly thank the Aedile Faustus for providing
such a warm welcome of myself and my gladiator Poliorcetes. Not to
mention the special seating! I recruited Poliorcetes on short notice
for the Cerealia Munera because I was in awe of his lightning quick
style and aptitude in a bigae. I'm not, however, too fond of his
name, which means 'City-Besieger' in Greek. Poliorcetes claims that
he took that name because it describes the way he will challenge his
opponents. And, not because he shares the same vices as the
original 'City-Besieger' Demetrias, the ancient king of Macedon! We
shall see.
Since my birthdate (Aprilis XIX) this year happens to fall upon the
end of Cerealia and because the Cerealia was a festival that my
Roman hero and Nova Roman namesake M.Tullius Cicero greatly revered,
I want to do everything I can to show Ceres the proper respect that
she is certainly worthy of.
With that said, may Ceres bestow her blessing on all of the
gladiators and their respective sponsors, and I hope that everyone
else will enjoy the Cerealia as much as I know I will. It is my
first festival after all!

Salve Lucius,
Welcome to Nova Roma! I have also just recently received my
citizenship (last night to be exact), and I'm already loving it! I'm
sponsoring a gladiator and entered a chariot in the upcoming Ludi
Cerialia. Also, I'm a history major at my local university and very
close to attaining my degree (I walk this May but I technically
graduate next Fall). Wouldn't mind learning Latin either. Anyway,
just wanted to welcome you to Nova Roma since everyone I've run into
here has done me the same favor. Take care!
Vale,
M.Tullius Philippicae of California
