Salve L.Pompei Octaviane!

Pienso que el Ludi por miembros venetos solamente es un idea muy
bueno porque Facto Presina es numero uno y va a ser muy dificil
conquistarlo. (bromeo, reis)

English - I think the Ludi for veneta members only is a great idea
because Facto Presina is number 1 and it would be very difficult to

Praefectus Dominus Serapio;

My thanks for your reminder. Unfortunately my wife being a travel
agent; cannot travel during the prime vacation season, it being
necessary that she stay at work and help others to travel during the
month that you have selected..

So I hope that you will all enjoy yourselves to the fullest in Bologna
this summer. If you are able to derive one-half of the pleasure that I
derived from my meeting with the Honored Senior Consul Quintillianus in
Oslo, Norway and his lovely charge!!!), then you will have a rollicking
good time, indeed.

I will keep you all in my mind at the INTERNATIONAL "ROMAN DAYS" EVENT
2003 in Baltimore, Maryland where the Ludi Maximus Gladitore, and the
XXth and XXIVth Legio's and others will strut thier stuff, and where
Roman shops, street vendors and legionaries will rub elbows with Roman
Senators and Gladiators from across the span of three thousand miles of
the United States, and perhaps from Europe and Canada as well.

There will be feasts of Roman Food and Roman wine will flow in small
rivers, while the Senate Elite watch from the comfort of thier cushioned
chairs the Gladiators and Legionaries sweating in the bright sun.

The gleam of Red and Gold as Officers of the Legions move past, together
with the dignified white and purple togas of the Senators.

The thrill of the Gladiator ring and the rush of excitement and blood
lust rising over the arena like an invisible fog as Noxii are sacrificed
in the arena to the crowd's delight, and brave warriors die at the
crowd's desire.

Rich costumes swirl in the streets and pathways, and the sun gleams from
the polished helmets and weapons of the Gladiator Camp, while the long
red and black pennants snap in the breeze. Field exercizes sporting
javelin throwng, running in full armor, one on one legionary combat with
sword and shield, and lovely ladies with sloe eyes tempting tall dark
men in the failing light.

Facinating displays of weapons, clothing , accoutrements line the brick
walkways, and the smell of carnival food floating over all. Bargains
load the vendors shelves and the smell of leather, steel and bronze lend
a thrill as serious customers, labor at a bargain over a spear head or a
diadem for a fair brow.

There will be gatherings in the evening around flickering lamps while
laughter and whispers both abound throughout the night and old friends
(as well as new ones) once again will meet and talk the night away in
the dark warmth of the Old South. The click of shod sandals upon the
stone laid paths making all aware that we are guarded from the spirits
of the night by the watchmen of the Legions.

Yes, my friend I shall miss meeting you all in Bologna face to face, and
I must therefore satisfy myself with such a fare as we will have here on
this far-away outpost beyond the Roman Lake, A sip of wine, a crust of
bread, and a flash of a ladie's ankle must suffice to keep me
entertained in this far-off land, while my desires carry me to whatever
offers on the wind!!!!!.

eye, beneath the fluff of his beard!!!!! (-: (-: (-: )

Sorry for the cross posting!

Salvete citizens,

After a 6 year battle against various diseases, yesterday morning my father
joined 2 of his brothers, his 4 sisters and various family pets in the
Elysian Fields. I can only hope that my father finds the peace in the
afterlife that eluded him in this lifetime.

I ask anyone who has a spare moment to send a positive thought to my mother
and to ask their God to give her strength during what is by far the worst
thing she's had to deal with in her life. She is close to a mental collapse
due to the strain of 6 years of watching my father degenerate day by day
until only 3 machines and multiple medications kept him bound to this Earth.

I will be leaving tomorrow morning for NYC and returning on Sunday June 15.
I'll bring my ancient laptop with me and will be in email contact again as
of next week, but until my return June 15, supporting my mother will take
precedent over my duties as Tribune. Anyone who needs me can email
diana_aventina@yahoo.com

Those who have private contact with me know that through my entire term as
Tribune, each month has brought a new catastrophe in my personal life.
Through it all, many citizens have sent me emails offering their moral
support. And this is why I truly believe that even when there is political
bickering going on on this list, the citizens here really care about one
another. This is why I think of Nova Roma as a family and like every family,
we don't always agree and just get on each other's nerves now and then. Ok,
I realize that I just short-circuited the Fluffy Bunny meter with that
comment :-)))

I would particularly like to thank the Collegium Pontificium for their
support at the beginning of April, when things seems so dark & hopeless that
even my faith in the Gods had wavered. Their emails let me see things once
again in the right perspective. So a gigantic thank you to: Marcus Cassius
Julianus, Q Fabius Maximus and Lucius Equitius Cinncinnatus for dragging me
out of a deeper depression than I thought was possible. And a gigantic thank
you also to Quintus Lanius Paulinus for his perceptive email that really
helped me to 'snap me out of it'.

A big thank you goes to the following citizens for the moral support that
they've offered me since this chaotic period began on Jan 1 2003: our
Consules T Fortunatus & C Fabius, Censor M Octavius, our Praetores D Iunius
& G Salix, Senatores P Cassia & L Cornelius, my fellow Tribunes M Marcius, L
Pompeianus, & L Didius Geminus, Rogatores Q Cassius & Renata Corva, 3
Aediles F Apulus, L Arminius & G Equitius, Curator Differum T Galerius
Paulinus, Curator Araneum T Octavius, Mercurius Apollonius Stefanus, G.
Popillius Laenas, G Modius Athanasius, F. Galerius Aurelianus Secundus, G
Fabia Livia, C Minucius Scaevola, A Apollonius Cordus, A Apollonius Scipio,
M Constantinus Serapio, C Curius Saturninus & last but not least my
gensmates Arnamentia, Cunctator, Laureatus & Demetrius. I hope that I didn't
forget anyone!

You've all helped me to keep the love of all of God's creatures in my heart,
my silly sense of humour, and the usual goofy smile on my face! A dark cloud
keeps threatening to overtake me, but thanks to you all, I remain one giant
step ahead of it and I can clearly see the Sun shining above me!

With love & big kiss!

Valete,
Diana Moravia Aventina

A. Apollonius to all citizens and peregrines,
greetings.

Our Tribune wrote:

> I agree but at the moment the law states that he can
> not run a second time.

This is something that I sometimes wonder about. I
notice the relevant law (a Salic one I think, though I
may be wrong) calls this an 'ancient prohibition' -
from what period does it date?

And was it ever legal, or just customary (though I
know the Romans didn't strongly distinguish between
those two categories). By my recollection it was legal
(though possibly unprecedented) for Ti. Sempronius
Gracchus to hold the Tribunate twice in succession in
the 130s BC; I don't know about other magistracies.

I can see a sort of Roman logic to it - preventing
accumulation of power - but the democrat in me says,
'surely if the voters want the same person in a job
twice in a row they should be permitted', and the
lover of efficiency in me says, 'surely it would be
useful for jobs which benefit from hands-on experience
and special skills to be exempt from this, especially
when we have a shortage of candidates for some
offices'.

Is anyone able to enlighten me?

Cordus

Salic law did not become an issue until after the Salic Franks invaded the Empire in the middle of the fourth century CE. Essentially, Salic law deals with inheritance not the elected offices, so would not bear on this case.
The offices of censor, vicars, consul, tribunes, quaestors, rogators, and curators (curates) all existed in Rome through the Imperial period but did not always mean the same thing. I cannot find a historical version of the Curator Differum or the Curator Arcanem. It might be a good idea to propose to the Consuls that these two offices might be exempted from the current laws or have a lex written for them. Of course, if one or both of the curators took on an accensus who was being trained to succeed them and would follow the existing policies, it would probably result in a smoother transition of the office.

Salvete Omnes,

I just picked up two books others may find of interest:

"Chronicle of the Roman Republic; The Rulers of Ancient Rome from
Romulus to Augustus", by Philip Matyszak

And

"Chronicle of the Roman Emperors; the Reign by Reign Record of the
Rulers of Imperial Rome", by Chris Scarre

They are "sister" volumes with similar formats. They have tons of
pictures and illutsrations, and the Republic book profiles all of
the usual suspects along with others such as Poplicola, Coriolanus,
Claudius Marcellus, etc.

The major sources are Polybius, Cicero, Livy, Valerius Maximus and
Plutarch for the Republic, and Aurelius Victor, Dio, Eusebius,
Euterpius, Herodian, Suetonius, and Tacitus for the Empire.

They are impressive volumes. Cives so inclined should check them
out. Just to be complete :-), here are the Amazon links:

Today I was at my local Borders and noticed in their display of

looked at the resource list and Nova Roma made the Idiot's Guide to

As others have pointed out, every new subscriber to this mailing list
is initially placed under moderation.

We have been forced to do this in order to avoid spammers, hit-and-
run insults and other nasty things.

However, as long as you behave in a reasonable manner, your messages
will reach this mailing list. Criticism is not enough to set the
moderation process into motion. Besides that, it has been a policy of
our current praetorial staff to inform *all* the subscribers of this
mailing list whenever a message has had to be moderated.

> Did I ever "insult" any-member of this Group, simply by having

No; it is not the case. You are under moderation, but none of your
messages has been deleted. They all have reached this mailing list.

> You don't want any criticism from Professional-Historians, do You?

We do have some professional historians among our members.

Others have explained the reasons for which every new subscriber to

However, there seems to be an equally mistaken assumption in your
criticism of F. Galerius Aurelianus Secundus. It may have missed your
obsevation, but the message from F. Galerius was addressed to
_Violentilla_ Titiana Saltatrix. Note that the praenomen is a
diminutive. Addressing someone whose praenomen is a feminine
diminutive as "little sister" is not necessarily the condescending
thing you take it to be (BTW, the praenomen Violentilla in attested in
a funerary inscription from Rome, AE 1953, 59). If Violentilla
Titiana Saltatrix is offended, I am certain she is capable of telling
him herself.
