Salve Flavia,

I hope that you are feeling ok considering the
lousy news that you got on Sunday night. And hey,
I thought of you yesterday. I went in one of
those close out stores and they were selling
garlic stuffed olives. I bought a whole bunch and
now have that garlicy aroma to prove it. The good
news is that no one can accuse me of having
tobacco breath anymore :-p

I hope that I covered everyone too.

The only thing that you missed was announcing
Fabius' new title which we two ladies awarded
him. Can you translate it so that we can add it
is name in the same spirit that Palladius earned
Invictus??

Whatcha think?

Salve,

I am planning the 3rd installment of the Lacus Magni Roman Festival (Now officially the Lacus Magni Roman Gathering) and wanted input as to when would be the best time to hold it. I am looking at Sept-Early Oct of this year. It would be held in Columbus, Ohio and hosted by me, Marcus Bianchius Antonius. I will once again have an exclusive item only available at the Gathering, plus food, fun and games.

I would also like suggestions as to what you would like to see done different or better or at all.

Of course, everyone is welcome...not just from Lacus Magni, but from anywhere....except France...hehehe.

Thanks and I hope to here from everyone soon.

Salve my dear Diana I had a great time too.

BTW the only thing I noted that might even have the look of newsworthiness was your repeated
and emphatic refusals to answer one simple question. Are you or are you not running in this years elections for Consul. A simple softball question that I promised I would keep to my self and I said you would NEVER see mentioned of it in the Eagle. AND YOU WON'T. So are you or aren't you?

This site, created by M.C. Kosian (Free Univ. of Amsterdam), takes a
critical look at the design and construction of Roman baths, including
technical analyses of the physics, engineering, and hydraulics
problems associated with a Roman bath house at Valesio (modern
Salento, Italy), and provides a critique of the traditional view of
bath construction.

Salvete omnes,

I just wanted to touch on one point which is sometimes overlooked
and is happily rare on this particular list. When you ask the
citizens a question and one or more of them respond with a lot of
work and effort, it is a good idea to thank them or at least
acknowledge that you recieved and saw their data. It takes only 20 or
30 seconds to say, thanks, got it and click. When people in other
walks of life tell me they're to busy in their work to give 20 or 30
seconds to someone, I don't buy it. I reply by telling them they may
be in the wrong type of work or too far over their heads if they are
that sadly organized. Also other people take notice and may not
bother to answer further questions from those concerned.

Regards,

Quintus Lanius Paulinus

I agree. Though I'll note that sometimes -- if for example a
person provides me with information via personal e-mail -- I'll
send the thanks the same way. (Other times I'll bring it to
the attention of the whole group anyway, just to make sure
folks know that someone is Doing Good Things.)

We do have a legitimate concern here in NR with e-mail volume.
So I make a personal judgement each time I post to the mainlist
to be sure that I have something to say that's worth sending
out to over 400 people. I also do try to keep the message short
and to the point, and I hope that others learn from my example.

But yes, Quintus Lanius, thank-you notes are always a good
idea. Courtesy is an excellent social lubricant, and it is
particularly useful here in our limited, text based medium.

Vale,

Salve Iulia Vespasia,

I am wondering where you got the pattern to make your husband's
tunic.

At one time I had such a pattern, but lost it. I thought it was in
the Files section, but if it was it isn't there now.

I'm asking as my daughter said she'd make one or two tunics for me,
but needs a pattern.

I would appreceiate any help you could give me. Thank you in
advance.

Vale,

Gaius Ursus Casca

While we wait for Iulia to reply, I'll mention that a classic
Roman tunic is very easy to make. It's just two rectangles of
wool or linen sewn together, leaving a gap for the neck and an
armhole on each side.

For my own tunic, I cut two 30 inch by 40 inch pieces of cream
colored wool and sewed them together. (A single 40 inch long
piece of 60 inch wide fabric cut in half works perfectly.)
If you want a longer tunic, just cut a longer length.

Leave an unsewn gap about 12 inches wide in the middle of the
top so you can get it over your head, and similar gaps at each
corner so you can stick your arms through it. That's all it
takes! I hemmed all of my edges, though even that is not
strictly necessary. But it does prevent ravelling over time.

Salvete Omnes,

yesterday an italian student of Archeology writing a final report
asked me one question about this issue.
She's studing the dresses of the local pre-roman populations,
Messapi in a special way. And she would like to know:
1) How you reproduce the original cloaths
2) what are the sources (literature, pictures, ruins, ect.)
3) what are the most famous archeological sources about it
4) how the apulian (south-Italy) cloaths were changed in the
republican roman cloaths.

Have you some useful links about the reproduction of the cloaths?
Thank you

I don't have any links to websites, but I can recommend
The Journal of Roman Military Equipment Studies. It's
available in bound volumes from Amazon.com, and provides
a lot of detailed scholarship based on surviving receipts,
paintings, mosaics, Trajan's Column, etc...

I know that the reenactors use this journal extensively for their
information on making armor, equipment, and everyday clothing.

If she just wants to see how people are making clothing and
equipment in the reenactment legions today, she should take
a look at the excellent Legio XX Handbook available at

http://www.larp.com/legioxx/hndbk.html

Um Tiberius Galerius in case you haven't noticed you are on the main list
here, so any answer Moravia would give you would be public information. I'm sure
that is not want you want. Or is it?

I'm lanista of the humble http://www.gladiatrix.info ludus

I just wanted to drop you all a note and say thank you for all visits
to my school, and I hope you enjoyed your time there.

At the moment, I am waiting for the censors to view my application
for the Gens Minervinus, so I'm not yet a full citizen of Nova Roma.

I hope to be soon.

I look forward to taking part in the conversations on this group.
