LOCAL EVENTS AND CHAPTERS

This is an aspect of Nova Roman life that's only now coming into its own. There are a number of places around the world where there are enough Citizens in the same area to justify putting together a local event. Can you find four more people within driving distance? Get together for lunch! Heck, even if it's just you and one other person, it's worth getting together. You do not need to have any sort of "official" sanction to to put together a meeting! Just do it! (But I would bet that your local governor would help out any way they could.) Here are some ideas for events you could put together with varying degrees of planning:

• Movie night (Gladiator, Spartacus, Quo Vadis, etc.)
• Lunch or dinner (just to actually meet other cives)
• Museum trip (most museums will have something pertaining to ancient Rome)
• Arrange a lecture by a local college professor on some Roman topic
• Hold a convivium (a full-blown Roman feast, complete with couches!)
• Costuming party (find a sewing machine, get some fabric, and togas for everybody!)
• Brewing party (of course, the fun part takes place a few months later...)
• Book discussion (find a book, get everyone to read it, then get together and chat about it)
• Get involved with the Sodalitas Munera (which is working on live gladiator combats)
• Hook up with any local reenactors, even if they're not Nova Romans, and go to their events (maybe your good example could get them to join us!)
• Form a reenactor legion of your own (then you've got drills, armor-making and kit-making sessions)

Since the whole question of local chapters is still something being formulated, the field is wide open. The first step is to find some people nearby. Your provincial governor will probably be happy to help with this (and you can find out who they are at http://www.novaroma.org/bin/view/provinciae), or you can strike out on your own by advertising on your provincial email list or on the main email list. The key is just to find other Nova Romans near you and get together.
