MSIE supports since ver. 5 AFAIK and I have no idea how many people use pre-5, but I think the best practice is to avoid messing with browser behavior as much as possible. [[User:M. 	The consular date does not link to the page for that year but instead links to an explanation of consular dating. This is a Bad Thing because it means that this link doesn't work the way all other wiki links work. If we link to some meta-information it should be through an obviously meta mechanism. I'm against using (?) as a meta info anchor, but I think we can come up with something that we can adopt uniformly across the wiki to mean "tell me more about this kind of thing". A wiki link proper should always mean "tell me about this particular thing". Since this is a template surely we can find something in UTF-8 that would work. Maybe † (&dagger;)? I think we've gone too far.

We are showing the year in three different systems. I think it is preferable to limit it to two and keep the CE year in the hover text. In part this is an educational thing. If we always display the CE date then that is what people will look at and there will be no incentive to learn the other systems. Putting the CE date in the hover makes it accessable (to most) in a quck and contextual way. People will learn quickly.
