The '''''Societas Via Romana''''' ("Society of the Roman Way") is a "multicultural, creative and organic society that celebrates the legacy of the classical world." The SVR began {{2001}} with an initial membership largely composed of [[Nova Roma|Nova Roman]] citizens and former citizens, many of whom had been members of the [[Amici dignitatis (Nova Roma)|''amici dignitatis'']].

The SVR is composed of ''collegia'' devoted to exploring particular aspects of Roman and Mediterranean history, culture and daily life. It is administered by a board of three to seven '''Curatores''' and an informal Senate. Eight years after its founding, the Society continues to prosper, has participated in at least [[Feriae Latinae (SVR)|one event]] with Nova Roma, and there are a considerable number of Romans who are members of both organisations.

What are the Feriae Latinae?
* The original Feriae Latinae was a celebration of unity among the Latins, and later of unity between Rome and Latium;
* It was a time for resolving disputes between Latin towns;
* A Sacred Truce was enforced and hostilities banned during this time;
* Atop Mons Albanus in Latium the Consuls appeared to participate in a sacrifice to Iuppiter Latiaris (Latin Jupiter);
* The remains of the the sacrifice were then shared out among the participant towns and Rome, giving all the benefit of the blessing.

What it means today:
* The celebration was about unity;
* It was a celebration of the kind of respect and solidarity that we hope for among today's various Roman and Roman Religious groups; and
* Since the Feriae Latinae are being held on April 20, by chance or design, the following day, April 21st, will be the Dies Natalis Urbis Romae Ipsius. (A double Roman unity bonanza, as it were.) We hope that all lovers of Rome will join together this April in celebrating the eternal spirit of Roma ipsa, as well as the determination, dedication and common enthusiasm seen among all modern Romans.

Exactly 9 citizens paid their taxes through this office & all monies were forwarded to the NR post office box in Colchester, CT. Also, some citizens included extra monies as contributions to the provincial treasury. I do not have figures on those citizens that paid directly by Paypal, money order, or personal check. I did not match any funds this year nor did any money come out of my personal business enterprise (Mensa Deorum); the latter because I did not attend any events this year because of other activities. The total revenue held by the province at this time is $87.50.

No fund raising events are planned at this time.

The only provincial activity that required expenditure this year was the Provincial Conventus in Birmingham, AL. I used all the remaining funds in the provincial treasury to defray the costs of lodging because some of the provincial citizens would not have been able to participate in the event otherwise. I continued to use my own funds to insure that my office stayed solvent & that informational flyers could be printed. Total expenditure for the conventus was $63.61

The province does have three provincial sign boards that are decorated with the emblems of Nova Roma and America Austrorientalis. The signs will be used at future events to identify the NR pavilion operated by AAe.

Expenditures are anticipated for the 2009 provincial conventus (if one is held) but there are no specifics at this time.

The province celebrated or supported caerimoniae/fasti for the Saturnalia and Paganalia as well as the Conventus in February. Due to other commitments, the province did not participate in the Pagan Unity Festival (Burns, TN) or the Festival of Souls (Memphis, TN). The Legio V Alaudae did not hold any events this year that our province was invited to attend and the Castra Romana (S.C.) was cancelled due to hurricanes.

The province is in the early planning stage for a provincial or inter-provincial conventus in S.C. at the Roman B&B there. Marca Hortensia Maior is working on the information now. No specific date is planned. Also, we hope to participate in events held by or in conjunction with
Legio V Alaudae Tennessee and the Ludus Gladiatorum. Classes and rites will be held at the Pagan Unity Festival XII (May 2009). The province will also continue to celebrate the Lupercalia, Vinalia Prioria, Mercuralia, Neptunalia, and plan to add other fasti onto the provincial calendar.

*VI - '''State of the province'''

Three regional praefects have turned in their reports and have indicated that they wish to retain their positions for another year.

The praefects for Georgia/Alabama and Florida have been discharged but there is a citizen who has show interest in assuming the latter position. I will be appointing him to that position soon. I am also considering appointing a procurator who will be my successor in this office.

*VI – I request to continue as gubernator of Am. Austrorientalis I believe that I have served Nova Roma well as gubernator of this province and would request that the Senate allow me to continue in the office for another year.

08 Gregorian)

I - Revenue from the province in 2760
Exactly 8 citizens paid their taxes through this office; six on time
and two after the tax period ended. Half of these monies were
forwarded to Tb. Galerius Paulinus Consul due to problems with the
pick-up schedule at the P.O. Box in Maine. The total amount
forwarded was $65.50; the province also retained 50% of the late
penalty fee. In addition, two citizens contributed $7.50 each to the
provincial treasury. Other citizens chose to pay their annual taxes
through Paypal or by mail to the corporate post office box in Wells,
Maine.

Finally, I promised my province that I would match 10% of each tax
payment collected through my office and also contribute a portion of
the sales from my personal business enterprise (Mensa Romana; now
Mensa Deorum) beginning at the Pompeii Reborn Event held at Mobile,
AL in February. I also made sales at the Rossini Festival in
Knoxville, TN; the Pagan Unity Festival in Burns, TN; and the Roman
Festivus in Clarksville, TN. The total of tax revenues and
contributions to the provincial fund 02/02/07 to 10/22/07 was:
$146.75. The current total in the provincial treasury (minus
expenditures under III.) is: $63.61

II - Description of fundraising activities planned
Further contributions from Mensa Deorum are expected to continue in
the future beginning with the Provincial Conventus planned for
January 2008 in Birmingham, AL. As this was the first year that
provincial taxes were collected through the gubenatore's office &
considering the foreseen increase in taxes, I was somewhat
disappointed only 8 citizens paid their taxes through my office.
Based upon recruitment and participation in events, I expect to see
an increase of approximately 25% or more next year. If the annual
taxes are not increased, this should result in about $75.00 in tax
revenues being retained by the province.

III - Description of provincial activities requiring expenditures
The Neptunalia was held on July 22, 2007 and $20.00 was used to help
defray the cost of food served at the event. The province
participated in the Roman Festivus (sponsored by the Legio V Alaudae
Tennessee) on Oct. 13, 2007. A demonstration of Roman religious and
domestic life was offered including a selection of Roman & Celtic
breads and condiments to be sampled by the spectators along with food
items for display. This necessitated an expenditure of $36.13. The
citizens of the province also offered a caerimonia to celebrate the
Meditrinalia & Fontinalia. Flyers for Nova Roma were distributed
resulting in three individuals joining the provincial yahoogroup.
Finally, $27.61 has been expended for the purchase of materials
(plywood, paint, sealer, and brushes) for signs to be made & used at
future events. These signs would display the emblem of Nova Roma
with the name and emblems of America Austrorientalis. Total
expenditures this year: $83.14.

IV - Anticipated expenditures for future events, activities, and
equipment
The only current planned expenditure is for five smaller signs for
the regions of the province showing the Nova Roma emblem, the name of
the Regio, and the emblems of the province to be used by the regional
praefects for recruiting purposes. Estimated cost for this project
is $40-45.00.
Further expenditures and projects will be discussed at the provincial
conventus in January.

V - Events held by the province or in conjunction with other
organizations in 2760
The province celebrated or supported caerimoniae/fasti for the
Lupercalia, Vinalia Prioria, Mercuralia, Neptunalia, Meditranalia,
and Fontinalia and plan to celebrate the Saturnalia in December. In
addition, members of NR Am. Austrorientalis held classes, conducted
rites, or participated in the Pompeii Reborn/Castra Romana (Mobile,
AL); Rossini Festival (Knoxville, TN); Pagan Unity Festival (Burns,
TN); Roman Festivus (Clarksville, TN); Festival of Souls (Memphis,
TN).

VI - Events planned for the province in 2761
The province is planning a conventus in Birmingham, AL in January.
Also, we hope to participate in events held by or in conjunction with
Legio V Alaudae Tennessee, Legio VI Ferrata, Legio XI Claudia Pia
Fidelis, and the Ludus Gladiatorum. Class and rites will be held at
the Pagan Unity Festival and Festival of Souls. The province will
also continue to celebrate the Lupercalia, Vinalia Prioria,
Mercuralia, Neptunalia, and plan to add other fasti onto the
provincial calendar.

VI - State of the province
All five regional praefects have turned in their reports and have
indicated that they wish to retain their positions for another year.
Lucius Vitellius Triarius, praefect for TN/AR, has been active in
opening a relationship with the Legio V Alaudae Tennessee as well as
maintaining the provincial website at bravehost & Volesia list at
yahoogroups.com. Gaius Antonius Germanicus, praefect for MS/LA, has
established a regional webpage and begun a newsletter. He has also
been active among the Society for Creative Anachronisms, Inc. and
Roman military reenactment units in the Louisiana area opening
relations with NR and those groups.. Helena Galeria Aureliana,
praefect for NC/SC, brought three individuals to Nashville to tour
the temples and participate in a ritus. Appius Galerius Aurelianus,
praefect for AL/GA, has been in ill health for most of the year and
has not been able to participate since he hosted the Georgia
Convivium in December of last year. Tiberius Cornelius Scipio,
praefect for FL, is the most recent appointment and has not been able
to participate due to his work.

VI - Request to continue as gubenator of Am. Austrorientalis
I believe that I have served Nova Roma well as gubenator of this
province and would request that the Senate allow me to continue in
the office for another year.

Appius Galerius Aurelianus is removed as Praefectus Regio Georgia
(encompassing the states of Georgia and Alabama) effective
immediately. He is released from the responsibilities, obligations,
and prerogatives of this office with the gratitude of the province
and the Gubenator.

The first section of Provincial Edictum XXV concerning Appius
Galerius Aurelianus' appointment is hereby nullified by this edictum.

Tiberius Cornelius Scipio is removed as Praefectus Regio Florida
(encompassing the state of Florida) effective immediately. He is

I, Fl. Galerius Aurelianus, Gub. Am. AAE by appointment of the Senate of Nova Roma, hereby issue [[Provincia America Austrorientalis - Tabularium (Nova Roma)|Provincial Edictum]] XXX for the Nova Roman Provincia America Austrorientalis on the subject of the provincial office of sub-praefect.

In an order to further the growth of Nova Roma within America Austrorientalis and to ease the duties of the praefecti regii, the provincial office of sub-praefect is hereby created.

The sub-praefect shall be appointed by the Gubernator America Austrorientalis by means of a provincial edictum.

The sub-praefect will be subordinate in rank to the Gubernator America Austrorientalis and the praefect regio over the sub-praefecture within their regio.

There shall be five sub-praefectures created, at this time, corresponding to the five regiones of the province. Each sub-praefecture shall encompass a specific geographical area to be declared by the Gubernator.

The sub-praefect's responsibilities, prerogatives, and duties are:

# to hold meetings such as are necessary for business, education, fasti, and recruiting;
# to recruit new citizens;
# to organize events and/or participate in events sponsored by other organizations that are appropriate to the goals of Nova Roma;
# to appoint scribae (with the consent of their praefect regio) and give them appropriate work assignments;
# to distribute appropriate and approved printed and/or etheric material to encourage the growth of Nova Roma within the province;
# to give all appropriate honors and respect to the Senate and People of Nova Roma by following the NR Constitution and Leges of Nova Roma along with the edicta of this province;
# to actively seek the cooperation, participation, and support of the Gubernator Am. Austrorientalis and their praefect regio in all their laudable undertakings;
# to honor the Religio Romana and Dii Immortales and never act in any manner that would diminish the Pax Deorum;
# to be assidui citizens of Nova Roma by paying the annual taxes unless released from that obligation by the consent of the Gubernator Am. Austrorientalis;
# to be members of the provincial curia and to offer good and wholesome advice.

hereby appoint

Appius Galerius Aurelianus as Praefectus Regio Georgia (encompassing
the states of Georgia and Alabama).

I, Flavius Galerius Aurelianus, Propraetor America Austrorientalis,
hereby define

The duties of a Praefectus Regio of America Austrorientalis, which
shall be:

a. to respect & obey the Constitution & By-laws of Nova Roma;
b. to report the conditions of the Regio to the Propraetor;
c. to encourage active participation by the citizens in the Regio
via meetings and events;
d. to resolve any difficulties or disputes that may arise between
citizens of the Regio by discussion and compromise; subject to

REORGANIZATION OF REGIONES

1. Each Regio will have a Praefectus Regio, who shall be a resident of that Regio.

2. The duties of the Praefectus Regio shall be:
A. To report the conditions of the Regio to the Propraetor.
B. To settle disputes between Citizens of the Regio, subject to Appeal to the Propraetor.
C. To establish the boundaries of any Municipia within the Regio.

3. The Regio of Florida shall consist of the state of Florida.

4. The Regio of Carolina shall consist of the states of North Carolina and South Carolina.

5. The Regio of Georgia shall consist of the states of Georgia and Alabama.

6. The Regio of Mississippi shall consist of the states of Mississippi and Louisiana.

7. The Regio of Tenneessee shall consist of the states of Arkansas and Tennessee.

This edictum becomes effective immediately.

DESIGNATION OF PATRON DEITIES

I, Lucius Sicinius Drusus, Propraetor America Austrorientalis, issue the following Edictum to designate the Patron Deities of America Austrorientalis.

1. Whereas, our Provincia has a long and proud history of Military service, To the United States, and to the Confederacy. Whereas, many of our citizens are members of Legions. Whereas, agriculture is a mainstay of our provincial economy. We shall ask Pater Mars to be our primary patron, for it is Pater Mars who keeps our fields abundant and protects our Legions.

2. Whereas, America Austrorientalis is a land of great natural beauty, Whereas, Her people have a long history of enjoying the gifts of nature. Whereas, our Provincia is home to the Spaceport from which men first left Earth to go to the Moon. It is proper that we ask Diana, Goddess of the Moon and of Natural places, the divine huntress to watch over us as one of our patron Goddesses.

3. Whereas, we are a Nova Roman Province, It is proper for us to pay honor to the Captoline Triad as our patrons. Iuppiter Optimus Maximus, Ruler of the Gods and men, who watches over our Nation, and our province, Iuno, who protects our families, Minerva who gives us the wisdom we need in our endeavors.

4. I Therefore call upon our Sacerdos Primus to perform Rites on behalf of our province asking these Gods and Goddesses to take us under their protection, and to report any Omens she might observe during these Rites.

ESTABLISHMENT OF PROVINCIAL OFFICES

I, Lucius Sicinius Drusus, Propraetor America Austrorientalis, issue the following Edictum to establish the Offices of the Provincia.

1. The Concilium Provincia Shall consist of all Legates appointed to Provincial Offices.
A. The Concilium Provincia shall keep the Propraetor informed of the conditions in the Provincia, and offer their advice to the Propraetor.

2. The Following Tittles and Duties are established for the Legates of America Austrorientalis.

3. The Legatus Provincia shall be the chief aide to the Propraetor. The duties of the office shall be:
A. To serve as Chairman of the Concilium Provincia.
B. To serve as acting Governor when the Propraetor is absent from the Provincia.

4. The Praefectus Fabrum shall oversee relations with the Legions of the Provincia. The duties of the office shall be:
A. To assist citizens of the Provincia who wish to join a Legion.
B. To assist members of the Legions who wish to become citizens of Nova Roma.
C. To coordinate Legion events and Provincial events.

5. The Sacerdos Primus shall oversee the official acts of the Religio for the Provincia. The duties of the office shall be:
A. To perform the rites of the Religio on behalf of the Provincia.
B. To advise other officials regarding the calendar.
C. To assist citizens who wish to perform private rites of the Religio.

6. The Praefectus Regios shall oversee the Regios of the Provincia. The duties of the office shall be:
A. To report the conditions of the Regio to the Propraetor.
B. To settle disputes between Citizens of the Regio, subject to Appeal to the Propraetor.
C. To establish the boundaries of any Municipia within the Regio.
D. To settle disputes between the Municipia of the Regio, subject to Appeal to the Propraetor.

7. Each Legate shall have the power to appoint a Scriba to assist him/her.

8. The Following Titles and Duties are established for the Provincial Scribes of America Austrorientalis.

9. The Curator Provincia shall be the chief Scribe of the Provincia. The duties of the office shall be:
A. To maintain the Provincial web site.
B. To serve as moderator of the Provincial mailing list.

10. The Quinquennalis shall maintain the Album Provincia. The duties of the office shall be:
A. To hold a Provincial Census at the discretion of the Propraetor.
B. To assist the Consular Quaestors in the collection of taxes from the Provincia.

1. Each Regio will have a Praefectus Regio, who shall be a resident of that Regio.

2. The duties of the Praefectus Regio shall be:
A. To report the conditions of the Regio to the Propraetor.
B. To settle disputes between Citizens of the Regio, subject to Appeal to the Propraetor.
C. To establish the boundaries of any Municipia within the Regio.

3. The Regio of Florida shall consist of the state of Florida.

Report for the Province of [[Provincia America Austroccidentalis (Nova Roma)|Am. Austroccidentalis]] for 2008

I - Anticipated revenue from the province: None, other than tax revenue. The number of tax payers is expected to remain as it is. Our body of active citizens is small but dependable.

II - Description of fundraising activities planned: No fundraising activities planned at this time.

III - Anticipated expenses within the province: Our citizens continue to plan regional gatherings within the province. We would like to use some of our tax revenue for a province-wide gathering of citizens. (Last year, no refund of tax revenue was requested, due to low activity. I expect this to change in 2008.)

IV - Description of provincial activities necessitating expenditure: We will save our refunded tax revenue for province-wide social gatherings of citizens. This is the same policy as in previous years. A majority of citizens in this province are also interested in gaining access to the [[Senatus Consultum to classify the land in Texas (Nova Roma)|Ager Publicus]], which is so close to us. EVERY new citizen asks about it, and we would like to plan a group excursion to visit the land.

V - Please let the record show that I would like to continue as governor.

The province was established in the first year of the Republic, 1998 {{1998}} The name "Austroccidentalis" is a neo-Latin word meaning southwestern. Note: The ancient Romans used the word Africus to refer to the southwest. (Africus was the God of the Southwest Wind; the connection between his name and the continent of Africa is debatable.)

July 3 {{Jul 3}} [[Scipio Hyeanus Africanus (Nova Roma) |Scipio Hyeanus Africanus]] was appointed governor. He wrote to Consul [[Flavius Vedius Germanicus (Nova Roma) |Flavius Vedius Germanicus]]: "Rome was not built in a day, and neither is a Provincea, but it is a thing I desire most, and will dedicate myself to it, I already have printed out the leaflets the site has to offer, I am working on a gentes web site so that others may know and be a part of. and if possible, would like to look into getting the Nova Roman flag made. I would accept any responsibility that the office would require, and do appreciate your aid." It is not clear how long Africanus remained in office, but the office is listed as vacant in the next year.

For most of this year, the governorship was vacant. Six Citizens attended, two with their infants. On Nov. 9, 1999 ({{Nov 9}}), Fimbria was appointed governor. The [[The Fimbria controversies (Nova Roma)|Fimbria Controversies]] or "Gender Wars" were touched off when he asked then-Censores [[Marcus Cassius Iulianus (Nova Roma)|M Cassius Iulianus]] and [[Decius Iunius Palladius Invictus (Nova Roma)|Decius Iunius Palladius]] under what name he should take the oath of office.

The Gender Wars being in full swing, Fimbria left office on March 22 {{Mar 22}}. The governorship remained vacant for most of the year.

On November 9 {{Nov 9}} the Senate voted on a measure that would have combined the provinces of America Austroccidentalis and America Medioccidentalis. The measure failed.

In that same session, [[Livia Marcia Aurelia (Nova Roma) |Livia Cornelia]] (later Livia Marcia) [[Livia Marcia Aurelia (Nova Roma) |Aurelia]] was appointed governor, and her home state of Colorado was added to the province. She appointed Fimbria her ''legatus'' for the Texas/Oklahoma region; they conducted the province's first census.

On November 11 {{Nov 11}} Aurelia wrote to the Forum and gave the following statistics for the province:

In early January, Sejanus explained that he had been in Europe attending to the details of his divorce, and so had been away from the province.

Aldus Marius Peregrinus: fix SVR link

I had to cut back on the Roman Eagles stuff because it was too much like an ad. Groups like [[Societas Via Romana|SVR]] and [[Pomerium]] get a single page each here because they are noteworthy for their relationships with Nova Roma, either in terms of history, common membership or shared activities. Things such as blogs can be added to our study resources links if their academic nature is sufficiently consistent with our goals to warrant the interest of our community. [[User:M.
