===What is the purpose of the Magna Mater Project?===
*The ultimate goal is the restoration of the temple, but this is honestly very long term, especially when one takes into account our current financial situation. But even having money, there are several other small, but necessary steps which are already under development to 'restore' the temple, in a wider significance of the meaning. To restore it also means to 'valorize' the sancturary, its historical and archaeological aspects, the significance of the cult of the Magna Mater. Put another way, 'enhancing' would be perhaps a better term for these first steps of the Project. Periodically, a bulletin such as this report is published to keep the citizenry appraised of project developments.

===How are the donations from Nova Roma utilized in the Magna Mater Project?===

===What is the return on this investment? Why is the Magna Mater Project so important?===
*It is important because it permits Nova Roma to spread its name into the academic world, and provides the mechanism by which we may be entitled to manage Roman monuments. It's an opportunity to make our name known in the macronational, physical world, after having done so much in the virtual, electronic world.

===Will Nova Roma ever be allowed to hold ritual there to Magna Mater?===
*A certain number of Nove Roma citizens were able to visit the proximity of the temple this past April, courtesy of a special pass by the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Roma (the entire south-west side of the Palatine, the Germalus, has been closed for the past 5-7 years). We were accompanied by a guardian for almost the entire visit, and at our tour of the house of Augustus, I guess a very simple rite could have been held. I believe that a longer than 5 minute ceremony, with an attendance of more than 10-15 people, would hardly be tolerated. I am not talking about 'religious' intolerance; it is just a question of security. Soprintendenza is working in the Germalus areas, and it is not easy to attain permission to enter. Honestly, I think to have a ritual there is currently quite impossible. Mind you, I am only speaking of what I foresee during my Aedileship. (M. Iulius Perusianus)

===What historical importance do the trees currently growing on top of the Magna Mater sanctuary hold? Why are they more historically important than then restoration of one of the more important temple sites of Roma?===

*I have asked this of the manager of the [[Palatine]] ruins. Currently, it is deemed a useless effort to cut these environmentally and historically protected trees, as the only part of the structure remaining is the basement of the temple (not considering the short remains of a couple of columns). We won't have a better view of the bricks with the presence of these trees, which have been there for some centuries. The general guidelines of the Soprintendenza Archeologica di Roma is to maintain the monuments as they are, unless there is original material of the structure to position in their respective places. And, even when these materials are found, it takes a lot of time to study exactly where they fit. It is a matter of academic official opinion that not a single reconstruction effort can be made without appropriate archaeological evidence to support such action. (Marcus Iulius Perusianus)

The project of the Temple of Magna Mater is created under [[Aedilis Curulis (Nova Roma)|Aedilis Curulis]] [[Caeso Fabius Buteo Quintilianus (Nova Roma)|Caeso Fabius Buteo Quintilianus]] and continued under [[Aedilis Curulis (Nova Roma)|Aedilis Curulis]] [[Franciscus Apulus Caesar (Nova Roma)|Franciscus Apulus Caesar]].

Honouring the [[Megalesia]] Ludi, they singled out, among others, the temple of the [[Magna_Mater|Goddess]] on the [[Collis Palatinus|Palatine Hill]] of [[Rome]], as a monument that [[Nova Roma]] could somehow adopt. They then began a project with the goal of restoration of the temple, and sought the collaboration of interested propraetors, former magistrates, priests and citizens.

A Joint Declaration was signed by those who supported the project:

Senior Curule Aedile Caeso Fabius Quintilianus (Aedilian site, Thule site), Honorable Caius Cornelius Puteanus (Germania Inferior site), Honorable Claudia Cornelia (Germania Inferior site), Illustrus Franciscus Apulus Caesar (Italia site), Honorable Caius Curius Saturninus (Finnicae site), Honorable Emilia Curia Finnica (Finnicae site and Academia site), Illustrus Antonius Gryllus Graecus (Lusitania site), Illustra Iulia Cocceia and Illustrus Sextus Apollonius Scipio (Gallia site) have formed an alliance to further the correct restoration and care for the Temple of Magna Mater in Rome.

*II. Each of the above promise to place a picture of the Temple of Magna Mater in Rome on "their" Nova Roman web-site (Aedilian, Provincial or Regional) with an inquiry asking all that visit their web-site to contribute to the correct restoration and care of the Temple of Magna Mater in Rome. The web-site shall also have the address of the Propraetor of Italia, so that it is possible to contact him to send funds to him to enable Provincia Italia to execute this joint promise. This web-page shall be designed by Illustrus Franciscus Apulus Caesar and made available by him to all the co-signers of this declaratio.

Their first goal was to try to restore part of the Temple, but it was soon realized that this kind of action would be very expensive, and absolutely out of reach with current NR financial means. M. Iulius Perusianus wrote two reports (the first being as Scribae Ad Historiam Provinciae Italiae {{2002}}) about the history of the cult, the history of the temple, the current archeological situation of the Temple and the connections established with key persons in Rome.

He first met with the Sovrintedenza of Rome, thereby obtaining good collaboration with the local public institution whch manages the economic and beaurocratic business of the Palatine. At the same time, M. Constantius Serapio and K. Fabius Quintilianus proposed to the Nova Roma Senate a new feature for the Curule Aedile, which was the possibility of raising donations for a detailed project, by way of a Nova Roma bank account, under the authorization and control of the Senate.

The Sovrintedenza of Rome provided the name of the Director the Archeological Areas of the Palatine, D.ssa Irene Iacopi, who informed us that the University "La Sapienza" of Rome is directing the South West Archeological Park, where the Magna Mater temple stands. Scriba Perusianus met the Director of Staff working on this side of the Palatine, Professor Patrizio Pensabene, one of the most important scholars of the Palatine and of the Magna Mater. He has 25 years of excavation involvement on the hill to his credit.

The area is now closed to the public, being under a massive restoration, but Professor Pensabene allowed us to enter this restricted area to check the status of the Temple, visit other sites (Clivus Victoriae and Romulean huts) and take some unofficial photos. We presented this data and photos during the International [[Nova Roma Rally]] in Bologna to the Senior Consul [[Caeso Fabius Buteo Quintilianus (Nova Roma)|Caeso Fabius Buteo Quintilianus]].

The most important development, at that time, is that close collaboration was obtained with Professor Pensabene and his assistant, Doc. Alessandro D'Alessio. Several suggestions were recieved regarding the goals of the project.

At the end of the year, the Senate approved Senior Curule Aedile Franciscus Apulus Caesar's proposal to use the Aedilician Fund to raise the donations for this project.

At {{Jan 29}} a meeting between the representatives of the Magna Mater Project and University of Rome "La Sapienza" took place. There Professor Patrizio Pensabenne and his assistant Alessandro D'Alessio pointed out some aspects about project.

The work in colaboration with the software company Informa started in order to build the Magna Mater website structure:
:"Informa SCARL, the software company which will build the general structure of the website, is quite ready to start. The developer presented us with a detailed plan of the job. Once they begin (they are waiting for our 'go', say, before the end of this month) they could accomplish and test the database in 15-20 days.
:Informa will create a Content System Manager, able to insert news with images and comments in two languages (two articles published on two different pages), abstract with miniature on the homepage and detailed and a full-length article in the same layout.
:If we decide on different content or presentation, they could create a different graphic for each style. The articles will be modified and removed by a restricted administration plan. There will be a database for usernames and passwords. Further information will be sent to us the coming days.
:With respect to the graphics and infrastructure, a structure will be presented to Aedilis Perusianus later this week, in a meeting with Informa. In any event the website will be composed by a flash intro with double access for English and Italian users. The general and informative pages will be in HTML."

Thus far I have gathered about 150 inscriptions from the various provinces that relate to the Magna Mater or that mention one of the sodalitates of dendrophores and the like. An example article was written for provincia Britannia. An article is completed for Moesia superior and Moesia inferior, and I have started (three times) an article for provincia Dacia."

====The situation at Fall 2007====

The archeological area where the Temple stands is restricted but we may have unofficial admission authorization by Prof. Pensabene, though we seek a more official permission to visit the area from the Sovrintedenza Archeological of Rome.

We have all the information about the history of the building and some maps about it. We will continue to look for further information about the Cult of [[Magna Mater]]. As said before, it's quite clear that it is not possible to restore the Temple itself, because its structural platform is nowadays covered by a tree growth known as Little Wood, which is in itself protected as an historical structure, and is also currently conserved for environmental reasons. However, in future it will be possible to restore some of the outer parts of the building or material found there. These restorations have huge costs. We are encouraged, nonetheless, in that we have established a good rapport with the university, but plans must be well detailed.

We are working in hope of attaining Official Patronage of the University: in this way we could promote the project (and Nova Roma) to other universities in the world, thus creating a network. The collaboration with the University of Rome give us an important credit, as does access to the closed archeological area and current information about the Temple.

The first settlements in the area of Guissona are dated back to the end of the bronze age and the first iron age, near 800bC. They are composed of a little village near a water source, known today as ''"the fountains"'' and ''Vell Pla'' square.

This first settlers did not knew about writing, they changed from bronze to iron tools and they used to incinerate the dead.

==Roman Iesso==

Within late II and early I bC centuries, Iesso becomes a perfectly organized town, with structured streets, a wall protecting the urban area, necropolis and public spaces. It's economy is based on agriculture, although some little pottery and textile workshops were active too.

This ancient city of Iesso is mentioned by documentary roman sources, as Pliny and Ptolomeus.

This city is one of the most important in Catalonia from that period. It was suspected by erudits from the XVI cent. AD, corroborated by archeologic works made in 1933 and proven by further explorations in this last years, new gathered data show the importance of this site and its scientific and historic interest.

Actual investigations make able to take some first interpretation of the urban structure of the city: with a polygonal plant about 18 hectares and a well structured street network, following the typical urban parameters from roman cities from this period.

Conserved elements from the roman Iesso ranges from a huge wall stretch (originally it was 280 meters), one of the entrance doors, and the original Cardo Maximus, with a total length of 560 meters.
From the first times of the city one can find the ruins of the termae, two necropolis and a funerary tombstone with versed latin inscriptions.

Roman Iesso occupied a superior extension than the middle age and current city, which make Iesso an exceptional case for roman cities in Catalonia. On the other hand, its influence area was really vast, including the actual ''La Segarra'' and some parts of ''Urgell'' regions

From VI AD century, and until XI AD, the continuity of the city falls in a black hole, as this is the war period between the arab world and the christian counts and the whole are became a huge ''no man's land'' and the frontier between the two worlds.

==Iasso nowadays==

The roman past of Iasso is honoured every year, the third sunday of July, with the Roman Macellum. Coining workshops, imperial troops parades announcing the coming of Caesar and Cleopatra, gladiatores, a slave market and imperial dances are some of the most representative acts.
One can also taste the roman cuisine in a tabern and have a look into ancient jobs and a huge range of craftworks and Iasso's streets are filled with patrician, plebeian and equites.

And at the end of the day, one can go to the Roman dinner and enjoy the oratory contest.

During these days, there are special visits to the museum and archeologic park, free for those dressed in roman clothes, and intensive archeology courses.

Gens Coruncania is an attested gens, the Coruncanii were pontifices, jurists, censors and consuls.

Tiberius Coruncanius, a distinguished Roman Pontifex and jurist, was descented from a father and grandfather of the same name, but none of his ancestors had ever obtained the honours of the Roman Magistracy. According to a speech of the emperor Claudinus in Tacitus, the Coruncanii came from Camerium (Ann. xi 24); but Cicero makes the jurist a townsman of Tusculum (pro Plane. 8).

==T. Coruncanius as Consul and Censor==

Notwithstanding his provincial extraction, this novus homo was promoted to all the highest offices at Rome. (Vell. Pat. iix 128) In BC 280, he was consul with P. Valerius Laevinus, and while his colleage was engaged in the commencement of the war againts Pyrrhus, the province of Etruria fell to Coruncanius, who was successful in quelling the remains of disaffection, and entirely defeated the Vulsinienses and Vulcientes. For these victories he was honoured with a triumph early in the following year. After subduing Etruria, he returned towards Rome to aid Laevinius in checking the advance of Pyrrhus. (Appian, Samn. 10. § 3.) In BC 270, he seems to have been censor with C. Claudius Canina. Modern writers appear to be ignorant of any ancient historical account of this censorship. In l'Art de vérifier les Dates, i. p. 605, Coruncanius is inferred to have been censor in the 34th lustrum, from the expressions of Velleius Paterculus (ii. 128), and a Claudius is wanting to complete the seven censors in that family mentioned bu Suetonius.
Seneca (de Vit. Beat. 21) says, that Cato of Utica was wont to praise the age of M. Curius and Coruncanius, when it was a censorian crime to possess a few thin plates of silver. Niebuhr (iii. p. 555) speaks of this censorship as missing; but thought it is not mentioned by the epitomizer of Livy, we suspect that there is some classical authority extant concerning it, known to less modern scholars, for Paneiroli (de Clar. Interp. p. 21) says, that Coruncanius was censor with C. Claudius; and Val. Forsterus (Historia Juris, fol. 41, b.) states, that in his censorship the population in the census amounted to 277,222.

==The first plebeian Pontifex Maximus==

About BC 254, Coruncanius was created Pontifex Maximus, and was the first plebeian who ever filled that office (Liv. Epist. xviii.), although, before that time, his brother jurist, P. Sempronius Sophus, and other plebeians, had been pontifices. (Liv. x. 9.) In BC 346, he was appointed dictator for the purpose of holding the comitia, in order to prevent the necessity of recallinf either of the consuls from Sicily; and he must have died shortly afterwards, at a very advanced age (Cic. de Senect. 6), for in Liv. Epit. xix, Caecilius Metellus is named as Pontifex Maximus.

==The jurist==

Coruncanius was a remarkable man. He lived on terms of strict friendship with M. Curius and other eminent statesment of his day. He was a Roman sage (Sapiens), a character more practical than that of a Grecian philosopher, but he was sufficiently versed in the learning of the times. That philosophy which placed the highest good in pleasure he rejected, and, with M. Curius, wished that the enemies of Rome, Pyrruhs and the Samnites, could be taught to believe its precepts. He was a manly orator; his advice and opinion were respected in war as well as in peace, and he had great influence in the senate as well as in the public assembly. (Cic. de Orat. iii. 33) Cicero, who often sounds his praises, speaks of him as one of those extraordinary persons whose greatness was owing to a special Providence. (De Nat Deor. ii. 66)
To the highest acquirements of a politician he united profound knowledge of a pontifical and civil law. Pomponious (Dig. 1. tit. 2. s. 2. § 38) says, that he left behind no writings, but that he gave many oral opinions, which were handed down to remembrance by legal tradition. Cicero says, that the Pontificum Comentarii afforded proof of his surpassing habilities (Brut. 14); and, in the treatise de Legibus (ii. 21), he cites one of his memorabilia. Another of his legal fragments is preserved by Pliny. (H.N. viii. 51. s. 77.) It might be supposed from a passage in Seneca (Ep. 114), that writings of Coruncanius were extant in his time, for he there ridicules the affectation of orators, who, thinking Gracchus and Crassus and Curio too modern, went back to the language of the 12 tables, of Appius, and of Coruncanius.

==Other Coruncanii==

The two Coruncanii who were sent BC 228 as ambassadors from Rome to Teuta, queen of Illyricum, to complain of the maritime depredations of her subjects, and one of whom at least was put to death by her orders, were probably sons of the jurist.

The existence of a patrician ''gens'' of this name is attested by Livy (i. 30, comp. Dionys. iii. 30), who expressly mentions the Curiatii among the noble Alban ''gentes'', which, after the destruction of Alba, were transplanted to Rome, and there received among the ''Patres''. This opinion is not contradicted by the fact that in B. c. 401 and 138 we meet with Curiatii who were tribunes of the people and consequently plebeians, for this phenomenon may be accounted for here, as in other cases, by the supposition that the plebeian Curiatii were the descendants of freedmen of the patrician Curiatii, or that some members of the patrician ''gens'' had gone over to the plebeians. ==Famous Curiatii==

1. P. Curiatius, tribune of the people in b. c. 401. The college of tribunes in that year laboured under great unpopularity, as two of them had been appointed by the co-optation of the college under the influence of the patricians. P. Curiatius and two of his colleagues, M. Metilius and M. Minucius, endeavoured to counteract the unpopularity and turn the hatred of the people against the patricians by bringing a charge against Sergius and Virginius, two military tribunes of the year previous, whom they declared to be the authors of all the mischief and the cause of the people's sufferings. Both the accused were condemned to pay a heavy fine, and the tribunes of the people soon after brought forward an agrarian law, and prevented the tribute for the maintenance of the armies being levied from the plebeians. (Liv. v. 11, 12.)

2. C. Curiatius, tribune of the people in b. c. 138, is characterised by Cicero (de Leg. iii. 9) as a homo infimus. He caused the consuls of the year, P. Cornelius Scipio Nasica (whom he nicknamed Serapio) and D. Junius Brutus to be thrown into prison for the severity with which they proceeded in levying fresh troops, and for their disregard to the privilege of the tribunes to exempt certain persons from military service. (Liv. JUpiL 55 ; Val. Max. iii. 7. § 3.)

There are extant several coins, on which we read C. cur. trige. or C. cur. F., and which may belong to this tribune or a son of his; but it is just as probable that they belonged to some patrician C. Curiatius, about whom history furnishes no information. (Eckhel, v. p. 199, &c.) One C. Scaevius Curiatius, who lived in the early period of the empire, is mentioned in an inscription in Orelli (No. 4046) as ''duumvir'' in the ''municipium'' of Veii. [L. S.]

Gens Coruncania is an attested gens, the Coruncanii were pontifices, jurists, censors and consuls.

Tiberius Coruncanius, a distinguished Roman Pontifex and jurist, was descented from a father and grandfather of the same name, but none of his ancestors had ever obtained the honours of the Roman Magistracy. According to a speech of the emperor Claudinus in Tacitus, the Coruncanii came from Camerium (Ann. xi 24); but Cicero makes the jurist a townsman of Tusculum (pro Plane. 8).

==T. Coruncanius as Consul and Censor==

Notwithstanding his provincial extraction, this novus homo was promoted to all the highest offices at Rome. (Vell. Pat. iix 128) In BC 280, he was consul with P. Valerius Laevinus, and while his colleage was engaged in the commencement of the war againts Pyrrhus, the province of Etruria fell to Coruncanius, who was successful in quelling the remains of disaffection, and entirely defeated the Vulsinienses and Vulcientes. For these victories he was honoured with a triumph early in the following year. After subduing Etruria, he returned towards Rome to aid Laevinius in checking the advance of Pyrrhus. (Appian, Samn. 10. § 3.) In BC 270, he seems to have been censor with C. Claudius Canina. Modern writers appear to be ignorant of any ancient historical account of this censorship. In l'Art de vérifier les Dates, i. p. 605, Coruncanius is inferred to have been censor in the 34th lustrum, from the expressions of Velleius Paterculus (ii. 128), and a Claudius is wanting to complete the seven censors in that family mentioned bu Suetonius.
Seneca (de Vit. Beat. 21) says, that Cato of Utica was wont to praise the age of M. Curius and Coruncanius, when it was a censorian crime to possess a few thin plates of silver. Niebuhr (iii. p. 555) speaks of this censorship as missing; but thought it is not mentioned by the epitomizer of Livy, we suspect that there is some classical authority extant concerning it, known to less modern scholars, for Paneiroli (de Clar. Interp. p. 21) says, that Coruncanius was censor with C. Claudius; and Val. Forsterus (Historia Juris, fol. 41, b.) states, that in his censorship the population in the census amounted to 277,222.

==The first plebeian Pontifex Maximus==

About BC 254, Coruncanius was created Pontifex Maximus, and was the first plebeian who ever filled that office (Liv. Epist. xviii.), although, before that time, his brother jurist, P. Sempronius Sophus, and other plebeians, had been pontifices. (Liv. x. 9.) In BC 346, he was appointed dictator for the purpose of holding the comitia, in order to prevent the necessity of recallinf either of the consuls from Sicily; and he must have died shortly afterwards, at a very advanced age (Cic. de Senect. 6), for in Liv. Epit. xix, Caecilius Metellus is named as Pontifex Maximus.

==The jurist==

Coruncanius was a remarkable man. He lived on terms of strict friendship with M. Curius and other eminent statesment of his day. He was a Roman sage (Sapiens), a character more practical than that of a Grecian philosopher, but he was sufficiently versed in the learning of the times. That philosophy which placed the highest good in pleasure he rejected, and, with M. Curius, wished that the enemies of Rome, Pyrruhs and the Samnites, could be taught to believe its precepts. He was a manly orator; his advice and opinion were respected in war as well as in peace, and he had great influence in the senate as well as in the public assembly. (Cic. de Orat. iii. 33) Cicero, who often sounds his praises, speaks of him as one of those extraordinary persons whose greatness was owing to a special Providence. (De Nat Deor. ii. 66)
To the highest acquirements of a politician he united profound knowledge of a pontifical and civil law. Pomponious (Dig. 1. tit. 2. s. 2. § 38) says, that he left behind no writings, but that he gave many oral opinions, which were handed down to remembrance by legal tradition. Cicero says, that the Pontificum Comentarii afforded proof of his surpassing habilities (Brut. 14); and, in the treatise de Legibus (ii. 21), he cites one of his memorabilia. Another of his legal fragments is preserved by Pliny. (H.N. viii. 51. s. 77.) It might be supposed from a passage in Seneca (Ep. 114), that writings of Coruncanius were extant in his time, for he there ridicules the affectation of orators, who, thinking Gracchus and Crassus and Curio too modern, went back to the language of the 12 tables, of Appius, and of Coruncanius.

==Other Coruncanii==

The two Coruncanii who were sent BC 228 as ambassadors from Rome to Teuta, queen of Illyricum, to complain of the maritime depredations of her subjects, and one of whom at least was put to death by her orders, were probably sons of the jurist.

==Why I run for aedilis Curulis==

Salvete fellow cives,

As of my candidacy to the Aediles Curules office, hereby I explain the points which made me think about running for this office.

If I am elected, I promise here, in front of the Gods, that I will pledge myself to the Constitution and laws of Nova Roma and to respect any macronational law applying to me or my official duties.

I will ask to join the investigation on the Magna Mater Project started by the Senate to determine the current legal status of this project, one of the most important of our Res Publica. I promise in front of the Gods, I will work as hard as I can, with all the cohors aedilicia, with help of our beloved Great Mother and the guidance of mighty Minerva, to retake it and to make it work, fulfilling the measures aproved by the Senate almost a year ago and [http://novaroma.org/nr/Magna_Mater_project#2761_.282008.29_Senate_.28Summer_Session.29_Measures_on_the_Magna_Mater_Project|which can be read at the wiki].

On Focii C and D, if the senate's investigation determines the validity of the Magna Mater Project, I will make a serious proposal to contact and begin negotiations with Italian authorities about puttings the donations to serious work. There are lots of things to be done in the Palatine Hill, and we had people who gave their money to get things done.

The Macellum is another project worth preserving. Nova Roma needs commerce, both internal and external. Commerce is the basis to a sustainable project. If we want to reach our main objectives, we must have a healthy commerce network, and filling our market with shops is a must.

Fellow cives of Nova Roma, these are the reasons for which I, Lucius Coruncanius Cato, humbly ask your vote for my candidacy to Aedilis Curulis.
