History of America Austroccidentalis

The province was established in the first year of the Republic, 1998 Fl. Vedio M. Cassio cos. MMDCCLI a.u.c. The name "Austroccidentalis" is a neo-Latin word meaning southwestern. Note: The ancient Romans used the word Africus to refer to the southwest. (Africus was the God of the Southwest Wind; the connection between his name and the continent of Africa is debatable.)

1998 Fl. Vedio M. Cassio cos. MMDCCLI a.u.c.

July 3 a.d. V Non. Quin. Scipio Hyeanus Africanus was appointed governor. He wrote to Consul Flavius Vedius Germanicus: "Rome was not built in a day, and neither is a Provincea, but it is a thing I desire most, and will dedicate myself to it, I already have printed out the leaflets the site has to offer, I am working on a gentes web site so that others may know and be a part of. and if possible, would like to look into getting the Nova Roman flag made. I would accept any responsibility that the office would require, and do appreciate your aid." It is not clear how long Africanus remained in office, but the office is listed as vacant in the next year.

1999 L. Equitio Dec. Iunio cos. MMDCCLII a.u.c.

For most of this year, the governorship was vacant. Tribunus militum Lucius Marius Fimbria put together the Province's first face-to-face gathering, the Hawkwood Roman Invasion, at the Hawkwood Medieval Fantasy Faire in Fort Worth, TX. Six Citizens attended, two with their infants. On Nov. 9, 1999 (a.d. V Id. Nov. ), Fimbria was appointed governor. The Fimbria Controversies or "Gender Wars" were touched off when he asked then-Censores M Cassius Iulianus and Decius Iunius Palladius under what name he should take the oath of office.

2000 Q. Maximo M. Minucio cos. MMDCCLIII a.u.c.

The Gender Wars being in full swing, Fimbria left office on March 22 a.d. XI Kal. Apr. . The governorship remained vacant for most of the year.

On November 9 a.d. V Id. Nov. the Senate voted on a measure that would have combined the provinces of America Austroccidentalis and America Medioccidentalis. The measure failed.

In that same session, Livia Cornelia (later Livia Marcia) Aurelia was appointed governor, and her home state of Colorado was added to the province. She appointed Fimbria her legatus for the Texas/Oklahoma region; they conducted the province's first census.

On November 11 a.d. III Id. Nov. Aurelia wrote to the Forum and gave the following statistics for the province:

  • Arizona - 3 citizens
  • Colorado - 8 citizens
  • New Mexico - 4 citizens
  • Oklahoma - 3 citizens
  • Texas - 20 citizens
  • Utah - 9 citizens

Total - 47 citizens; this did not include one citizen from Mexico who responded, as his country was not yet its own province.

Aurelia set up the first provincial mailing-list, NR_Austroccidentalis, on egroups.com (now Yahoo Groups).

November 29 a.d. III Kal. Dec. Aurelia issued an edict dividing the province into territories:

  • Magna Fossae (Arizona and Utah). "Grand Canyon"
  • Mons Petrosus (Colorado and New Mexico). "Rocky Mountains"
  • Solus Astrum (Texas and Oklahoma). "Lone Star"

2001 Fl. Vedio (II) M. Cassio (II) cos. MMDCCLIV a.u.c.

March 11 a.d. V Id. Mar. The Senate voted on whether to keep Aurelia as governor. She was not prorogued. (The vote was 5 for, 5 against, and 2 abstentions.) This vote is the proximate cause of the Ides of March resignations.

March 15 Id. Mar. The Ides of March Resignations. Aurelia joined with several others and resigned her citizenship. Fimbria followed in late Aprilis.

March 16 a.d. XVII Kal. Apr. Pontius Sejanus Marius (later Marcus Pontius Sejanus) put forward his name to become governor. Sejanus also started a Yahoo group called the Roman Historical Society.

There were two candidates for the governorship: Sejanus and Marcus Flavius (no cognomen). Arguments were raised in the Senate that neither candidate met the requirements for the office.

April 3 a.d. III Non. Apr. Sejanus was appointed governor. The vote was 5 for, 4 against, and 3 abstentions.

Sejanus set up a new provincial Yahoo group, America_Austroccidentalis, and appointed legates.

Nothing more is recorded about the province for this year.

2002 M. Octavio L. Sulla (II) cos. MMDCCLV a.u.c.

No activity for the province is recorded for this year.

2003 K. Buteone T. Labieno cos. MMDCCLVI a.u.c.

In early January, Sejanus explained that he had been in Europe attending to the details of his divorce, and so had been away from the province.

April 2 a.d. IV Non. Apr. Gaius Africanus Secundus Germanicus was appointed by unanimous vote of the Senate to be Propraetor.

No other activity for the province is recorded for this year.

2004 Cn. Salvio Cn. Equitio cos. MMDCCLVII a.u.c.

March 12 a.d. IV Id. Mar. Germanicus was not prorogued. No one was appointed to replace him, despite a call for candidates in April.

Aug. 2 a.d. IV Non. Sext. Lucius Cornelius Sulla Felix announced that there were 172 citizens in the province, of which 21 had paid their taxes.

No other activity for the province is recorded for this year.

April 1 Kal. Apr. Arnamentia Moravia Aurelia was appointed governor.

July 24 a.d. IX Kal. Sext. Marcus Moravius Piscinus Horatianus announced that there were 182 citizens in the province, of which 33 had paid their taxes.

Terra Olei (Texas and Oklahoma). “Oil Land”
Plaga Tescorum (Arizona and New Mexico). “Place of the Wilderness”
Montes Saxosi (Colorado and Utah). “Rocky Mountains”

April 15 a.d. XVII Kal. Mai. Aurelia issued an edict proclaiming the provincial deities. This was based on a suggestion from Lucius Aurelius Severus.
