A praenomen a római név első eleme, a személynév, amely megkülönbözteti az egyént a családon belül. A praenoment nem szokás önmagában használni: legfeljebb közeli rokonok, vagy nagyon közeli barátok szólíthatják egymást praenomenükön.

Nagyon kevés praenomen volt használatban. Az itt felsorolt tizenhét a római nevek 99%-ban előfordul. [1]


Rövidítésük

Fontos tudni, hogy minden egyes standard praenomennek, és néhány ritkának is, megvolt a saját rövidítési módja. Mindegyik rövidítés egyedi, és kizárólag egyetlen praenomennek felel meg: a praenoment nem mindig rövidíthetjük tehát egyszerűen az első betűjével. Például a T. mindig Titust jelent, sohasem Tiberiust; viszont a Ti. mindig Tiberius, és sohasem Titus.

A praenoment szinte kizárólag ilyen rövidített formában írták le, de mindig a teljes alakot mondták ki szóban, tehát M. Tullius Cicero a normális íráskép, és nem Marcus Tullius Cicero.

Öröklődés

Sok gens és család csupán két-három praenomenre szűkítette az amúgy is szűk választékot saját névadási gyakorlatában. Az elsőszülött fiú szinte mindig az apa praenomenét kapta, a második pedig a nagyapáét vagy más fontos férfirokonét.

Eképpen P. Cornelius Scipio idősebb fia a P. Cornelius Scipio (Africanus) nevet viselte; kisebbik fia pedig a L. Cornelius Scipio (Asiagenus) nevet kapta, nagyatyja után.
