La primitiva organización social en la Italia Central se centró alrededor de la gens, (clan), "un linaje aristocratico o in grupo de linajes y algunos de sus más cercanos seguidores y dependientes". [1]
Inscripciones del siglo 7º AC muestran nomres formados en aquella época por un praenomen (que identifica al individuo) y un nomen (que identifica la gens). [1]
