This law is intended to bring the concept of assistants for the tribunes closer to the ancient custom.
- 1. All apparitores nominated by a tribunus plebis for his assistance shall therefore be called "viatores."
 - 2. A viator shall be nominated by an edictum, and must be a plebeian citizen.

Praetorian commentary on the applicability of this lex
Comment. In accordance with the Edictum Praetorium de Legibus Mutandis, article I is no longer considered valid, with precedence given to the modifications introduced by the Lex Arria de decuriis apparitorum. Other titles other than viator are now permissible under the Lex Vedia apparitoria.
