Gaius Plinius Caecilius Secundus (c. 61 CE at Comum - c. 112 CE) Roman writer, consul. Known as "Pliny the Younger".
Born in Comum, son of L. Caecilius. Adopted by his uncle, G. Plinius Secundus ("Pliny the Elder"), probably in his will. Pliny the Younger was seventeen when he witnessed the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 CE. His two letters to Tacitus (Book Six, numbers XVI and XX) give a vivid description of the eruption and narrate the end of his uncle's life.
Soon thereafter, at age 18, he began his career as a lawyer at Rome, specializing in cases of inheritance.
Pliny was consul suffectus for part of 100 CE and in 110 he was sent to Bithynia.
