The palla is the traditional mantle worn by Roman women, fastened by brooches. It was similar to the pallium that a man would wear. The shape was rectangular instead of semi-circular as with the traditional toga. Women wore the palla outdoors often draped over the head but always in conjunction with a veil or cap.
