L'organisation sociale primitive en Italie centrale était centrée autour desgens, (clan), "une lignée aristocratique ou un groupe de lignées et quelques personnes qui les suivaient et dépendaient d'eux".^[1]

Inscriptions from the 7th century BCE show names consisting by that date of praenomen (identifies the individual) and nomen (identifies the gens). ^[1]
