History of America Austroccidentalis
The province was established in the first year of the Republic, 1998 Fl. Vedio M. Cassio cos. ‡ MMDCCLI a.u.c. The name "Austroccidentalis" is a neo-Latin word meaning southwestern. Note: The ancient Romans used the word Africus to refer to the southwest. (Africus was the God of the Southwest Wind; the connection between his name and the continent of Africa is debatable.)
1998 Fl. Vedio M. Cassio cos. ‡ MMDCCLI a.u.c.
July 3, 1998 (a.d. V Non. Quin. ‡ Fl. Vedio M. Cassio cos. ‡ MMDCCLI a.u.c.). Scipio Hyeanus Africanus was appointed governor. He wrote to Consul Flavius Vedius Germanicus: "Rome was not built in a day, and neither is a Provincea, but it is a thing I desire most, and will dedicate myself to it, I already have printed out the leaflets the site has to offer, I am working on a gentes web site so that others may know and be a part of. and if possible, would like to look into getting the Nova Roman flag made. I would accept any responsibility that the office would require, and do appreciate your aid." It is not clear how long Africanus remained in office, but the office is listed as vacant in the next year.
1999 L. Equitio Dec. Iunio cos. ‡ MMDCCLII a.u.c.
For most of this year, the governorship was vacant. On Nov. 9, 1999 (a.d. V Id. Nov. ‡ L. Equitio Dec. Iunio cos. ‡ MMDCCLII a.u.c.), Lucius Marius Fimbria was appointed governor. Fimbria was the focal point of the Fimbria Controversies, commonly known as the Gender Wars.
2000 Q. Maximo M. Minucio cos. ‡ MMDCCLIII a.u.c.
Fimbria left office on March 22, 2000 a.d. XI Kal. Apr. ‡ Q. Maximo M. Minucio cos. ‡ MMDCCLIII a.u.c. The governorship remained vacant for most of the year.
Nov. 9, 2000 a.d. V Id. Nov. ‡ Q. Maximo M. Minucio cos. ‡ MMDCCLIII a.u.c.. The Senate voted on a measure that would have combined the provinces of America Austroccidentalis and America Medioccidentalis. The measure failed, but Livia Cornelia Aurelia was appointed governor. (Aurelia joined the gens Marcia in early 2001, becoming Livia Marcia Aurelia.)
Colorado was added to the province by the same vote of the Senate on Nov. 9, 2000, a.d. V Id. Nov. ‡ Q. Maximo M. Minucio cos. ‡ MMDCCLIII a.u.c. (Aurelia lived in Colorado.)
Nov. 11, 2000 a.d. III Id. Nov. ‡ Q. Maximo M. Minucio cos. ‡ MMDCCLIII a.u.c.. Aurelia wrote to the Forum and gave the following statistics for the province:
Arizona - 3 citizens Colorado - 8 citizens New Mexico - 4 citizens Oklahoma - 3 citizens Texas - 20 citizens Utah - 9 citizens Total - 47 citizens
Aurelia set up the first provincial group using egroups.com.
Nov. 29, 2000 a.d. III Kal. Dec. ‡ Q. Maximo M. Minucio cos. ‡ MMDCCLIII a.u.c.. Aurelia issued an edict dividing the province into territories:
Magna Fossae (Arizona and Utah). "Grand Canyon" Mons Petrosus (Colorado and New Mexico). "Rocky Mountains" Solus Astrum (Texas and Oklahoma). "Lone Star"
2001 Fl. Vedio (II) M. Cassio (II) cos. ‡ MMDCCLIV a.u.c.
March 11, 2001 a.d. V Id. Mar. ‡ Fl. Vedio (II) M. Cassio (II) cos. ‡ MMDCCLIV a.u.c.. The Senate voted on whether to keep Aurelia as governor. She was not prorogued. (The vote was 5 for, 5 against, and 2 abstentions.) This vote is the proximate cause of the Ides of March resignations.
March 15, 2001 Id. Mar. ‡ Fl. Vedio (II) M. Cassio (II) cos. ‡ MMDCCLIV a.u.c.. The Ides of March Resignations. Aurelia joined with several others and resigned her citizenship.
