Governor: a person appointed by the Senate to oversee the daily handling of a province. There are four different titles for governors:

Consul
- A person governing a province who is a currently sitting consul.
Praetor
- A person governing a province who is a currently sitting praetor.
Proconsul (or Pro consule)
- A person governing a province who has previously been, but is not currently, a consul. This person is governing the province in the place of a consul, and thus could be said to be governing the province pro consule.
Propraetor (or Pro praetore)
- A person governing a province who has previously been, but is not currently, a praetor. This person is governing the province in the place of a praetor, and thus could be said to be governing the province pro praetore.
