Roman title for the Greek deity Dionysius. The ancient Italic god Liber and Bacchus were conflated in Roman religion, with Bacchus taking the traditional role of Dionysus. He was the popular god of wine and also the god of Orphic mysteries. There were many collegia devoted to Bacchus, which put on plays and held dinners in the god's honour.
