Senatus Consultum on the Reinstatement of the Lex Equitia de Tirocinio Civium Novorum (Nova Roma)
SENATUS CONSULTUM ON THE REINSTATEMENT OF THE LEX EQUITIA DE TIROCINIO CIVIUM NOVORUM

The Lex Equitia de tirocinio civium novorum was previously approved by the Comitia Populi Tributa on Non. Oct. ‡ Cn. Salvio Cn. Equitio cos. ‡ MMDCCLVII a.u.c. This law provided a simple measure to aid the development of our new and younger citizens. It raises the concept of a citizenship examination, not to inhibit newer citizens but to guide their understanding of Nova Roma and its society. It provides an incentive for citizens to study and undertake basic reading of available assets before gaining ‘iura publica', the right to vote and to stand for any public office. Recent forum activity over the last year has seen numerous instances of misconceptions of Nova Roma and newer citizens being unable to fully appreciate our society. The need to provide a level of common knowledge has become apparent and is currently placing increased workloads across various active magistrates.
I. This Senatus consultum repeals “Senatus consultum on Waiving Law Requirements”, allowing Lex Equitia de tirocinio civium novorum to be reinstated to full effect.
II. As this SCU revives the process under Lex Equitia de tirocinio civium novorum, effective on the Kalends of September, 2021, all new applicants for citizenship will now be subject to its legislation and be required to undertake an examination to complete a probationary period. Current new citizens who have an approved name but have not yet completed a 90-day period with Nova Roma are exempt.
III. In clarification of Part IV.A of the Lex Equitia de tirocinio civium novorum, the consuls and the Censorial Office both have the right to waive the requirement of the 90-day probationary period and the requirement of the Citizenship Test on an individual basis if they deem that an accelerated process or the waiving of these requirements in case of a person would bring more benefit to Nova Roma than the strict application of the procedure.
