An accensus (f. accensa) can be appointed by imperium holding magistrates and officers, consuls, praetors, and also by censors, or by anyone who has been granted this right by law. The main job of an accensus is to serve as a personal assistant of the magistrate, advising and counseling the magistrate and fellow officers. Accensi can be given various tasks regarding office management, as well.
Previous use of the term in Nova Roma
Before the constitutional reform in Cn. Lentulo Alexandro T. Domitio cos. ‡ MMDCCLXIX a.u.c. and Q. Arrio (III) A. Tullia cos. ‡ MMDCCLXXIV a.u.c., accensi were only appointed by consuls in Nova Roma. It was an erroneous practice and has been corrected since.
