The Cognomen PERUSIANUS came thinking that this name could mean from the land south of the Aesis river and, in general, from Central Italy. This is a consequence of the theory expressed by Augusto Ancillotti, a linguist of the Perugia University, found in his book "Le tavole di Gubbio e la civiltà degli Umbri", Iama 1986 (Ancillotti and Cerri).

The word PERAZNANIE is in the Tabulae Euguvinae(2nd Table, B side, line 7). According to Ancillotti this term come from PER-AISIN, formed by

  • PER = an umbrian prefix for "over","on the other side of"; it is present also in archaich Latin as a verb or in the word "peregrinus" from "per-agri" meaning "over the ager".
  • AISIN = the path of the Aesin river corresponds for a great part to the Way of Iron in the archaic era (just note that in German "Eisen" means "Iron"). This theory is helped also by many toponims of places in the Italian regions of Umbria and Marche which take the word AISIN in their root.

Giacomo Devoto, 1940, ex president of the Accademia della Crusca sees in the Table IIb, a list of all the federate tribes of the community of Gubbio, the town where the tables were found and still are, to whom the sacrifice was done. He translated the term PERAZNANIE as connected with PERAZNANI (or PERSNATI), from PERASNA, ancient name of Perugia.
