Census in Roma Antiqua

The census was a register of Roman citizens and of their property, first established by Servius Tullius, the fifth king of Rome. After the expulsion of the kings it was taken by the consules, until censores were appointed for the purpose of taking it in 443 B.C.

The census, the first and principal duty of the censors, for which the proper expression is censum agere (Liv. III. 3, 22, IV.8), was always held in the Campus Martius, and from the year B.C. 435 in a special building called Villa Publica, which was erected for that purpose by the second pair of censors, C. The legal basis for organizing the Census in Nova Roma consists of:

• Nova Roman constitution
• Lex Fabia de censu
• Edicts and other relevant documents of the census MMDCCLXIV

The census is under the jurisdiction and responsibility of the censors and their official staff of the year 2764 a.U.c .

The Nova Roma 2764 a.U.c census working team is composed of:

• T. Iulius Sabinus, L. Iulia Aquila, C. Maria Caeca and Cn. Cornelius Lentulus.

Already counted for census are:

• those who voted in the main election.
• those who have paid taxes for the current calendar year including exempts.
• persons who became citizens during the current calendar year.

Governors are entitled to obtain from censors their provincial citizens' data!

• Census edict was published in the relevant official lists of Nova Roma.
• Managing the census 2764 a.U.c - instructions to Nova Roman governors were issued. Governors may request the data of the citizens of their provinces from censors!

• Citizens were assigned in tribes and centuries.
• At a.d. V Kal. Oct. ‡ all citizens were contacted for census.
• In concordance with the schedule at a.d. III Id. Oct. ‡ census activities were officially closed.
• The censorial office worked to census reports. At a.d. XIII Kal. Nov. ‡ reports were presented.
• Nova Roma 2764 a.U.c Lustrum was performed - the end of 2764 a.U.c census.
