a.d. XVI Kal. Mar. L. Arminio Ti. Galerio cos. MMDCCLX a.u.c.

Event: Roman Focus Group meeting
Location: Vancouver Island, British Columbia
Citizens: Gaia Aurelia Falco Silvana
Summary: The topics discussed were beginning Latin, continued; consideration of a list of topics for future discussion; Roman archaeological sites as presented in National Geographic magazines (with special note of the perfect teeth in the Pompei skeletons!) and some discussion of dietary and hygiene practices (like tooth-brushing) that left them with teeth not to be seen again for over 1000 years.

Food: myrrh gum was presented by Gillian, with instructions for liquefying it and notes on the fact that Romans perfumed some foods (including lentil soup!); it was also noted that the Roman-era non-stick spray consisted of baking on top of bay leaves; and the Roman pinch of soda in the cooking water for cabbage makes it falling-apart tender. (Easy touches for anyone to add to their kitchen.)

Notes: Silvana's teaching aids are useful, and she is getting a solid grip on using the direct method (the one she has used for years with other languages) wrapped around Latin structures.

Future discussion topics will almost certainly include member-directed focus on famous Romans (one member is a Cicero fan, and Silvana is a confirmed Marcus Aurelius person) including Silvana's own computer-drawn material.

Membership: Membership is now a solid group of four: Silvana anticipates repeat contact with another person who was interested in late autumn, but was waiting for serious surgery and not able to participate until done and recovered.

NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, March 14, 1:30 - 3:30 pm
Topics: Beginning Latin, cont'd; famous Romans (member's choice); a Roman cookbook; more from National Geographic.

a.d. XVI Kal. Feb. L. Arminio Ti. Galerio cos. MMDCCLX a.u.c.

Event: Roman Focus Group meeting
Location: Vancouver Island, British Columbia
Citizens: Gaia Aurelia Falco Silvana
Summary: The topics discussed were: Beginning Latin, cont'd; photos of Volubilis (Roman town site in Morocco, near the city of Meknes; photos by Silvana); food; intro to Marcus Aurelius and Roman virtues.

Silvana is developing teaching aids to use with LATIN FOR DUMMIES, including her own computer-drawn material. The photos prompted some discussion of the refined techniques of Roman mosaic-making, which seem to have been preserved & continued by the mosaic craftsmen of Morocco. Food centred on nut trees and locally grown Mediterranean foods--figs and one olive tree are known to grow here in the Valley.

The benefits of locally grown nuts and herbs were discussed, including dandelions and dock. On the topic of virtues, the public virtues of Fides, Clementia and Concordia led to discussion of the current world political situation.

Membership: The group now numbers four: it has lost one member due to work commitments, but have gained two new members.

NEXT MEETING: Wednesday, February 14, 1:30 - 3:30 pm.
Topics: Beginning Latin, cont'd; Marcus Aurelius (now that members will have had time to read some of the material presented on Jan. 17); more on food. Other topics as suggested by members.

Mulsum (a recipe including honey, white wine, black pepper, bay leaf, saffron and a roasted, crushed date pit) was well received, while fresh dates (locally available Iranian imports), were declared "amazing." The dates of Saturnalia were introduced to the group, and a university information sheet on the focus of the festival was distributed, covering home, family, warmth, etc.

Event: Roman Focus Group meeting
Location: Vancouver Island, British Columbia
Citizens: Gaia Aurelia Falco Silvana
Summary: Due to weather conditions (which made national news) the Roman focus group gathering was postponed from Nov. 15 to Nov. 22. Topics discussed were Latin, history and food (recipes).

In Latin pronunciation was practised and a basic Q & A format was introduced. For History, books of interest were exchanged. A selection of Roman recipes were brought for the group to try; Roman-style tuna in a sauce of dates, herbs, wine and vinegar, defritum and honey. The verdict was that, for all its exotic combintion of ingredients, it was "delicious." The group also tried "tractum", a type of cracker.

Event: Provincial Meeting
Location: Edmonton, Alberta
Citizens: Gnaeus Iulius Caesar, Gaius Vipsanius Agrippa, Quintus Suetonius Paulinus, Vibia Lucretia Camilla
Summary: This was a working lunch where Marcus Patronius Proculus had passed on his apologies for being unable to attend due to work commitments. The proposed provincial medal was discussed. The discussion covered in general terms the size, metal and design of the medal. Samples provided by the local mint were examined. Further discussions concerning the design will take place on the provincial list.

The possibility of a bid to host the North American Nova Roman convention that is being proposed was also mooted, but it was agreed that Western Canada in March maybe more than some citizens from other warmer provinces could tolerate. Additionally the burden of arranging it would fall on four people, which was an unrealistic expectation. It was agreed to defer a bid until such time as the citizen roll has increased to a point where there are sufficient volunteers.

A significant decision was made to proceed with an application for Oppidum status for Castellum Augustus (Edmonton), there being sufficient citizens living within the city limits to qualify, Gaius Vipsanius Agrippa being the primary applicant. This was fully endorsed by Gnaeus Iulius Caesar and all present. The necessary paperwork will be submitted to the Senate for consideration of the grant of this status.

The local recruitment strategy was set as being principally through existing citizen's contacts since this has the obvious potential to yiled fast results, with efforts continuing on the GO ROMAN! project. The timing of submission of the provincial report was also debated, together with the status of the provincial legion and pricing for a supplier to produce the provincial flag. Further discussion was held concerning the Nova Roman current affairs and news. More items from the Harpax webstore were purchased.
