A praepositus, or "provost" in English, is a mid-level appointed subordinate officer who can be given various government tasks. Praepositi are appointed in the central administration as well as in the provincial administration. Praepositi can be civilian or military officers, as well, often, especially in the provinces, both at the same time.

Praepositus is never used as a title for a lieutenant governor, but it denotes ministers with various specific tasks responsible for an array of duties or for a special task or mission.

Praepositi are always appointed by magistrates or other higher officers.
